4 – On the Way Home, I Tried to Recognize the Man Beside Me While Every Familiar Detail Began to Feel Different

Ryan insisted on carrying the diaper bag.

It was a small gesture.

A few hours earlier, I would have accepted it without thinking.

I might even have thanked him.

Instead, I watched him lift the bag from the stroller and carry it toward the car as though he were trying to prove that he could still be useful.

I followed with the girls.

Ava had fallen asleep again.

Mia was awake but quiet, her eyes following the movement of people passing us.

I opened the back door and secured the stroller.

Then I checked the girls' straps before closing everything.

Ryan stood beside me.

"Do you need help?"

I shook my head.

"I've got it."

He looked as if he wanted to say something.

Then he stepped back.

I settled into the driver's seat.

Ryan got in beside me.

For a moment, neither of us started the journey.

The car smelled faintly of the baby lotion I kept in the side compartment.

A small blanket lay folded near the back seat.

There was a bottle of water in the cup holder and a receipt tucked into the console.

Ordinary things.

Things that belonged to our life.

I stared at the steering wheel.

I had imagined Ryan sitting beside me on the way home.

I had imagined asking him about his journey, listening to his stories, and telling him all the things he had missed.

Now I couldn't think of anything to say.

Ryan fastened his seat belt.

"Claire."

I turned the key.

"We should go."

He fell silent.

I pulled away from the harbor.

The road ahead was familiar.

I had driven it many times during the months Ryan was gone.

I knew where the traffic slowed.

I knew which intersection took longer than expected.

I knew where I usually stopped if I needed groceries on the way home.

But that morning, every familiar place seemed strange.

I kept my eyes on the road.

Ryan watched the passing buildings.

After several minutes, he spoke.

"I'm sorry you had to see that."

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

I waited.

He didn't continue.

I looked at him briefly.

"You're sorry I saw it?"

He turned toward me.

"That's not what I meant."

"Then what did you mean?"

He sighed.

"I know this looks terrible."

I almost missed the next turn because I was concentrating so hard on not reacting.

Looks terrible.

I repeated the words silently.

He had kissed Simone.

I had watched him do it.

There was no question of appearances.

Yet he was still talking as though the problem might be the way the situation looked rather than what he had chosen.

"Ryan, I watched you kiss her."

"I know."

"Then stop talking about how it looks."

He pressed his lips together.

I turned my attention back to the road.

For several minutes, the only sounds were the engine and the faint movement of the girls behind us.

I checked the rearview mirror.

Ava was asleep.

Mia had turned her head toward the window.

I wanted to reach back and touch her little foot.

I wanted to hear her make one of those happy sounds that usually made me smile even when I was exhausted.

Instead, I kept driving.

Ryan finally spoke again.

"I didn't expect you to be there."

I let out a slow breath.

"I know."

He looked at me.

There was something uncertain in his expression.

Perhaps he had expected me to argue.

Perhaps he thought my answer meant I was beginning to accept his explanation.

It didn't.

I simply believed that he had not expected to find me standing at the harbor.

I had surprised him.

That was the one thing I knew for certain.

He rubbed his palms against his trousers.

"Can we please wait until we're home?"

I glanced at him.

"We are going home."

"I mean, until the girls are settled."

I wanted to tell him that the girls had been settled all morning.

They had been fed, dressed, and packed into the stroller before we left.

I had made sure they were comfortable because I wanted their reunion with their father to be special.

He was the one who had changed the morning.

But I said nothing.

I was tired of arguing about when I was allowed to ask questions.

I decided I would wait until we reached the house.

Not because Ryan had earned my patience.

Because I needed to think.

I needed to understand what I wanted to ask before I let him answer with another sentence that explained nothing.

The rest of the drive passed slowly.

When we reached our street, I noticed the house before I realized I had been looking for it.

The front windows were exactly as I had left them.

The small plant beside the entrance needed water.

A package sat near the door.

Nothing had changed.

I parked and switched off the engine.

For a moment, I kept my hands on the steering wheel.

I had spent so many nights imagining this moment.

Ryan would return.

He would step through the front door.

I would watch him look around at the home we had kept waiting for him.

The girls would be there.

We would begin again.

Instead, I was afraid to get out of the car.

Ryan unfastened his seat belt.

"Let's get them inside."

I nodded.

We moved around to the back seat.

He lifted Ava carefully while I took Mia.

The girls stirred but didn't cry.

Ryan held his daughter against his chest and looked down at her.

For a moment, I saw the man I had missed.

He brushed a finger across Ava's cheek.

She made a small sound.

He smiled.

I wanted that smile to mean everything I had once believed it meant.

But now I knew a person could love his child and still hurt the child's mother.

I knew those two things could exist together.

That knowledge frightened me more than the kiss itself.

I carried Mia into the house.

The familiar smell of laundry detergent greeted me.

A stack of folded clothes sat on the couch.

The diaper bag landed beside the door.

I had cleaned the living room the night before because I wanted the house to look welcoming.

I had put fresh sheets on the bed.

I had cleared a place for Ryan's luggage.

I had even moved a small photograph of the girls onto the table near the entrance.

Now I looked at those things and felt embarrassed.

I had prepared a homecoming for a man who had arrived with another woman already occupying some part of his life.

I didn't know what part.

That was the problem.

Ryan came in behind me and closed the door.

He set Ava's carrier beside the couch.

Then he looked around the room.

"You've done a lot."

I glanced at the folded clothes.

"It's what I do."

He looked at me.

"I didn't mean—"

"I know."

I didn't want to hear another explanation for a sentence that hadn't needed one.

I took Mia into the nursery and laid her in her crib.

She protested when I lowered her onto the mattress.

I placed a hand gently against her chest until she relaxed.

Then I went back for Ava.

Ryan had already lifted her from the carrier.

He was standing near the couch, holding her with both arms.

I stopped in the doorway.

He looked peaceful for a moment.

He looked like a father who had missed his daughter.

I wanted to be able to hold on to that picture.

But I couldn't separate it from the picture of him kissing Simone.

The two images seemed to exist side by side in my mind.

I took Ava from him and carried her into the nursery.

After putting her down beside her sister, I stood between the cribs for a few seconds.

The room was quiet.

A small night-light sat on the dresser.

The girls' clothes were arranged in the drawers.

A package of diapers stood beside the changing table.

Everything was ready for the life I thought we were about to begin.

I rested my hand on the edge of one crib.

Then I heard Ryan moving around in the living room.

I went back to him.

He was standing beside the couch, looking at the family photographs on the wall.

One picture showed us on our wedding day.

Another had been taken during a trip we had taken before I became pregnant.

There was also a photograph of Ryan and me sitting together in the garden, both of us laughing at something outside the frame.

He stared at that one for a long time.

I wondered what he was thinking.

Whether he remembered that day.

Whether he remembered how easy it had been to make me laugh.

Whether he was comparing the woman in that photograph with the woman standing in front of him now.

I didn't ask.

I walked to the kitchen instead.

I needed water.

I filled a glass and drank slowly.

Ryan followed me a moment later.

"Claire, we need to talk."

I put the glass on the counter.

"Yes, we do."

He leaned against the opposite side of the kitchen island.

For a moment, he seemed to be searching for the right words.

I waited.

"I know I hurt you."

I looked at him.

It was the first thing he had said that sounded like an acknowledgment rather than an attempt to delay the conversation.

I wanted to believe it meant he was finally ready to tell me the truth.

Then he continued.

"But I need you to understand that there's more to this than you saw."

I felt the small amount of hope I had allowed myself begin to disappear.

"More than you kissing Simone?"

He looked down.

"Yes."

I waited for him to explain.

He didn't.

My hands rested against the edge of the counter.

I could hear the refrigerator running.

Somewhere in the nursery, one of the girls made a soft noise in her sleep.

The house sounded exactly as it always had.

That made the silence between Ryan and me feel even more unnatural.

"What is it, Ryan?"

He rubbed his forehead.

"I don't know how to explain it."

I shook my head.

"You keep telling me that."

"Because it's true."

"Then start somewhere."

He looked at me.

I could see the strain in his face.

For the first time that morning, he seemed genuinely unsure of himself.

Part of me wanted to comfort him.

I wanted to tell him that we could work through anything if he would just be honest with me.

That was the promise I had always made to myself about marriage.

We would face difficult things together.

We would tell each other the truth, even when it hurt.

But a promise only worked when both people were willing to keep it.

I wasn't sure Ryan was willing.

He took a breath.

"I made mistakes while I was away."

I stared at him.

The words were simple.

They should have made things clearer.

Instead, they opened up more questions than I could count.

"What mistakes?"

He looked toward the hallway.

I followed his gaze.

The nursery door stood partly open.

Our daughters were sleeping a few steps away.

I thought about the future I had imagined for them.

I wanted them to grow up in a home where love didn't require one person to ignore what the other was doing.

I wanted them to see their parents treat each other with respect.

I wanted them to know that trust was something people protected, not something they demanded after breaking it.

I looked back at Ryan.

"Did you cheat on me?"

He went very still.

I had never asked him a question like that before.

Not because I had never felt insecure.

Because I had always believed the answer was obvious.

Ryan looked at the counter between us.

Then he lifted his eyes to mine.

He did not answer immediately.

And in that moment, I understood something I had been trying to avoid since the harbor.

I had spent the morning waiting for Ryan to explain what I had seen.

But the question was no longer whether he could explain the kiss.

The question was whether the man standing in my kitchen was willing to tell me the truth about our marriage.

I waited for his answer.
