she asked.

"Keeping it in the basket by the desk."

"Oh."

She looked at the empty table.

"I thought Gavin might want to leave things here."

"He can still use the dish for his keys."

She nodded.

"Of course."

Then she went into the kitchen.

I followed a few minutes later.

She was making toast.

"I hope things are better between you and Gavin," she said.

"We haven't talked much today."

"He's been quiet."

"I've noticed."

She placed the toast on a plate.

"He doesn't like conflict."

"Neither do I."

Brenda looked at me.

"Then perhaps you could let things settle."

I leaned against the counter.

"I have been letting things settle."

She looked down at her plate.

"I don't know what else you want me to say."

"I don't need you to say anything."

She looked surprised.

"I just need us to be clear about how we're going to live together."

Brenda carried her plate to the table.

I did not follow her.

I returned to the living room and opened my book.

I read for almost an hour.

Then I went outside to sweep the front steps again.

The weather had turned colder, and the wind carried dry leaves across the path.

I worked until the steps were clear.

When I came inside, I hung the broom in the closet and washed my hands.

I was beginning to notice how often I had used chores to avoid thinking about the situation.

There was always something to clean.

Something to fold.

Something to put away.

Work gave me a sense of control when conversations did not.

There was nothing wrong with keeping the house tidy.

But I did not want to spend every day cleaning around a problem I was afraid to name.

That afternoon, I sat at the desk and reviewed the household bills.

I checked the tax receipt against the amount in my notebook.

Then I returned the papers to their envelope.

I did not need to do anything else.

I closed the drawer and left the study.

The hours passed.

Gavin did not call.

He did not send a message.

I prepared dinner at the usual time, but I did not wait for him before eating.

Brenda joined me at the table.

She seemed uncomfortable at first.

Then she asked about the vegetables.

I told her where I had bought them.

We talked about the grocery store for several minutes.

It was a small, ordinary conversation.

I was grateful for it.

I did not want every interaction with Brenda to become another discussion about the house.

When we finished eating, she carried her plate to the sink.

"Thank you for dinner," she said.

"You're welcome."

She paused beside the counter.

"I know this has been difficult."

I looked at her.

"It has."

She seemed to search for something else to say.

Then she nodded and went upstairs.

I washed the dishes and wiped the counter.

Afterward, I sat in the living room.

I turned on the lamp and picked up my book.

When Gavin came home, I heard him place his keys in the dish on the hall table.

He walked into the living room and stopped when he saw me.

"Did you get my envelope?"

"It's in the basket by the desk."

"Why did you move it?"

"I moved the mail so the table would be clear."

He looked toward the hallway.

"You could have left it where it was."

"I could have, but the table was getting cluttered."

He stood still for a moment.

Then he walked to the desk and retrieved the envelope.

When he returned, he looked at me.

"Have you decided to stop talking about Mom?"

I closed my book.

"No."

He sighed.

"Claire."

"I haven't changed my mind about needing an agreement."

He sat in the chair opposite me.

"What agreement do you want?"

I felt a flicker of hope.

Then I reminded myself to listen carefully.

"I want us to agree on when we'll review the arrangement. I want to know what space Brenda needs. And I want us to discuss changes before they're made."

He looked at the envelope in his hands.

"Mom doesn't want to feel like she's being watched."

"I don't want her to feel that way, either."

"Then why keep bringing up rules?"

"Because clear expectations are better than resentment."

He was quiet.

I waited.

After a moment, he said, "I'll talk to her."

"Thank you."

He stood and walked upstairs.

I remained in the living room.

I did not know whether he would speak to Brenda or whether he would decide the conversation was too uncomfortable.

I could not control that.

But I had answered his question.

I had told him what I wanted.

I had not changed the request to make it more convenient for him.

Later that evening, I went to the desk and opened my notebook.

I looked at the three items again.

Length of stay.

Household space.

Communication.

Nothing had been settled.

I did not add a dramatic note or write down my anger.

I simply left the page open for a moment, then closed the notebook.

I was learning that clarity did not require me to explain myself forever.

At some point, the other person had to decide whether to take part in the conversation.

I had done my part.

Now I needed to pay attention to what happened next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: I Realized That Keeping the House Peaceful Was Not the Same as Feeling Safe Enough to Speak Honestly Inside It

The next morning, Gavin left before I came downstairs.
