he said.

"I imagine."

He looked toward the kitchen.

"Is dinner ready?"

"It will be in about twenty minutes."

He nodded and went upstairs.

I stayed where I was.

Part of me wanted to call after him and remind him about our conversation.

Another part wanted to wait and see whether he remembered on his own.

I decided to wait.

I prepared dinner and set the table.

Brenda came downstairs and helped carry the plates.

Gavin returned a few minutes later.

We ate together.

The conversation stayed on ordinary things.

Brenda mentioned the weather.

Gavin talked briefly about work.

I answered when someone asked me a question.

No one mentioned the cupboard or the bedroom.

When we finished, Gavin carried his plate to the sink.

I followed him into the kitchen.

"Can we talk now?"

He stopped with his plate in his hand.

"About what?"

I felt the disappointment before I could hide it.

"We agreed to talk about the living arrangements."

He placed the plate in the sink.

"Right."

He glanced toward the stairs.

"Can it wait until Mom goes to bed?"

I studied his face.

"All right."

He nodded and went back to the living room.

I finished cleaning the kitchen.

Then I sat in the living room with Brenda and Gavin for a while.

The television was on, but I barely followed the program.

At nine, Brenda stood and said she was tired.

"Good night," she said.

"Good night," I answered.

Gavin watched her climb the stairs.

Then he picked up the remote and turned down the television.

"Do we really have to do this tonight?"

I looked at him.

"You said we would talk today."

"I know what I said."

"Then I would like us to talk."

He set the remote on the table.

"Fine."

I turned off the television.

We remained in the living room, facing each other across the coffee table.

I had imagined this moment so many times that I expected to feel prepared.

Instead, my hands felt cold.

I folded them in my lap.

"I want to start with something simple," I said. "How long do you expect your mother to stay?"

Gavin leaned back.

"I still don't know."

"Does she know?"

"I haven't asked her to decide."

"Then how can we make plans?"

He sighed.

"She needs time."

"How much time?"

"Claire, I don't have a date."

I nodded slowly.

"Then can we agree to discuss it again in two weeks?"

He frowned.

"Why two weeks?"

"Because we need to check how the arrangement is working."

He looked at the ceiling.

"I don't want to make my mother feel as though she's on a deadline."

"I'm not asking you to put her out after two weeks. I'm asking us to talk again."

He was quiet.

I continued.

"I also want us to agree on the space she's using. I want her to be comfortable, but I don't want the whole house reorganized without a conversation."

"She's not reorganizing the whole house."

"She asked to use the storage cupboard."

"That's hardly a major change."

"It matters because no one asked me."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Why is that so important to you?"

I looked at him.

"Because I live here, too."

He did not answer.

I let the silence remain.

Then I spoke about the part I had been avoiding.

"When I tell you something bothers me, I need you to listen without calling me difficult or saying I'm making trouble."

Gavin's expression changed.

"So now I'm the problem."

"I didn't say that."

"You've been criticizing everything I've done since Mom arrived."

"I'm telling you what has been difficult for me."

He shook his head.

I felt the old urge to explain myself in greater detail.

Instead, I stopped.

I had asked for a conversation.

I had explained what I needed.

I could not force him to hear it.

After a while, he stood.

"I need to think about this."

"All right."

He looked at me as though he expected another argument.

I did not give him one.

He walked toward the stairs.

At the bottom step, he paused.

"We'll talk again."

I nodded.

Then he went upstairs.

I stayed in the living room for several minutes.

The conversation had not produced an agreement.

But I had finally said everything I had been holding back.

I had asked for a reasonable arrangement.

I had explained why the way he spoke to me mattered.

I had given him room to answer.

He had chosen not to answer fully.

That was disappointing.

It was also information.

I turned off the lamp and went upstairs.

In the bedroom, Gavin was already in bed.

I changed and lay down without speaking.

For a while, I listened to the quiet.

I did not know what he would decide.

I did not know whether Brenda would stay for weeks or months.

But I was beginning to understand that I could not build a stable home around promises that never became clear agreements.

I needed to watch what happened next.

Not because I wanted to catch anyone doing something wrong.

Because I needed to know what kind of life I was actually living.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: I Stopped Explaining the Same Things Over and Over and Began Paying Attention to the Choices Gavin Made After Our Conversations

The next morning, I woke before the alarm.
