I thought I could use a little of this cupboard."

I set my laundry basket on the floor.

"We can talk about what space is available."

She gave a short sigh.

"I don't understand why that needs to be a conversation."

"Because the cupboard already has a purpose."

"There is plenty of room for towels somewhere else."

I looked at the shelves.

There was not much room elsewhere without moving other things.

"I'd rather keep the linens together."

Brenda pressed the clothing against her chest.

"I have nowhere to put my things."

"You have the drawers in the blue bedroom."

"They're already full."

I glanced into the room.

The dresser drawers were closed, and the suitcase on the bed had been zipped shut.

I could not tell how full the drawers were.

I also did not think I needed to inspect them.

"If you need more space, let's decide what can be moved," I said.

She shook her head.

"This is exactly what I mean."

"What do you mean?"

"You make everything difficult."

I felt the old reflex rise in me.

I wanted to apologize simply to end the uncomfortable moment.

Instead, I looked at the clothing in her arms and spoke plainly.

"I'm willing to find a reasonable place for your things. I'm not willing to have the house rearranged without discussing it."

Brenda stared at me.

For a moment, she looked more surprised than angry.

Then she placed the clothing on the bed.

"I'll speak to Gavin."

"You can speak to him."

She turned away.

I picked up my laundry basket and went downstairs.

I was not pleased with the conversation.

I did not enjoy having to defend a cupboard.

But I was beginning to understand that the cupboard was not really the issue.

It was another decision that seemed to have been made before anyone asked me what I thought.

I continued with my morning.

I washed the breakfast dishes and wiped the counter.

Then I went to the desk and checked that the property records envelope was still in the drawer.

It was.

I closed the drawer and left the room.

Near noon, Brenda came downstairs.

She had changed her clothes and was carrying her handbag.

"I'm going out for a while," she said.

"All right."

She stopped near the front door.

"Gavin thinks I should be able to make myself comfortable here."

I put down the book I had been holding.

"I want you to be comfortable."

"Then I don't understand why you object to me using a little space."

"I don't object to you having space. I object to being left out of the decisions."

She adjusted the strap of her handbag.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it keeps happening."

Brenda looked toward the staircase.

"I don't want to be caught between you."

"I don't want that either."

She opened the door.

"Perhaps Gavin can explain it better."

Then she left.

I stood in the entryway for a few seconds after the door closed.

I did not know whether she genuinely misunderstood me or whether she preferred Gavin's version of events.

Perhaps there was some truth in both possibilities.

She wanted a place to stay.

Gavin wanted to give her one.

And I wanted to remain part of the decisions affecting my own house.

Those needs did not have to cancel one another out.

But they could not be balanced if only two of us were allowed to speak.

That afternoon, I went through the hall closet and removed a few things I no longer used.

I found an old umbrella with a broken handle and a pair of gloves that had lost their mate.

I placed them in a bag for disposal.

I did not do it to make room for Brenda.

I did it because I had been meaning to clear the closet for months.

When I finished, I looked at the space that remained.

There was room for coats and shoes.

There was no reason to turn the closet into another argument.

I closed the door.

Gavin came home earlier than I expected.

He found me folding a towel in the kitchen.

"Mom says you're refusing to let her use the cupboard."

I put the towel down.

"That's not what I said."

"Then what did you say?"

"I said we should decide together what space is available."

He removed his coat and hung it over the back of a chair.

"She needs somewhere to put her things."

"I understand."

"Then why can't she use the cupboard?"

"Because it holds the household linens, and I haven't agreed to move them."

He looked at me in disbelief.

"You're arguing over towels now?"

"No. I'm asking you to stop turning every request for a discussion into an argument about whether I'm being unreasonable."

He stood silently.

I could see him preparing his answer.

He would tell me I was making his mother uncomfortable.

He would tell me that I had plenty of space.

He would say that he was trying to help and that I was making it harder than it needed to be.

I waited.

Finally, he said, "You could make this easier if you wanted to."

I felt a wave of sadness.

For years, I had believed that making things easier was my responsibility.

If Gavin was upset, I tried to soothe him.

If he was impatient, I tried to find a better time to talk.

If he made a decision without me, I tried to explain why I needed to be included.

Now I could see that the effort was not being shared equally.

"I have been trying to make things easier," I said. "But I cannot do that by agreeing to everything after it has already been decided."

Gavin looked away.

"She's my mother."

"I know."

"I won't leave her without a place to stay."

"I haven't asked you to."

"Then what do you want?"

"I want us to agree on how this arrangement will work."

He crossed his arms.

"You're not going to get a written contract from me."

"I didn't ask for one."

"You keep talking as if this is some business arrangement."

I shook my head.

"I am talking about living together. That is exactly why we need to communicate."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he asked, "What if she stays for a while?"

"What does a while mean?"

"I don't know. A few weeks, maybe longer."

"Then let's agree to talk again before those weeks pass."

He looked irritated.

"Why can't you just let things happen?"

"Because things are happening whether I agree or not."

He opened his mouth, but I continued.

"I don't want to fight with you. I don't want to fight with Brenda. I want to know what we're agreeing to, and I want you to recognize that I have a say in it."

For a moment, he looked as though he might answer.

Instead, he picked up his coat again.

"I need some air."

He walked out the front door.

I heard it close behind him.

I remained in the kitchen, looking at the towel on the counter.

My hands were trembling slightly.

I pressed them flat against the countertop until they steadied.

I had not shouted.

I had not insulted him.

I had not asked him to abandon his mother.

I had simply refused to pretend that the decision was already settled.

That did not make me feel strong.

It made me feel exposed.

There was no guarantee that Gavin would respond differently next time.

There was no promise that Brenda would stop asking for more space.

But I could no longer measure the worth of what I said by whether they liked hearing it.

I finished folding the towels and put them away.

Then I sat down with my book.

I read until the light outside began to fade.

When Gavin returned, he went upstairs without speaking.

I did not follow him.

I did not send a message asking whether he was still angry.

I let the evening continue.

For once, I did not treat his silence as an emergency I had to fix.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Kept the Deed and Tax Papers Together and Began to Understand That My Home Could Not Depend on Gavin’s Approval

Two mornings later, I found Brenda standing beside the linen cupboard with a stack of folded clothing in her arms.
