I usually handle it."

She nodded as though that were an ordinary fact.

Then she carried her coffee upstairs.

I sat down and finished my breakfast.

I did not feel proud of the work I had done.

I did not feel victorious.

I simply felt more certain about what I knew.

The taxes had been paid.

The property had been maintained.

The paperwork was in order.

Those facts did not settle the disagreement with Gavin, but they gave me something solid to rely on when the conversation became confusing.

Later that morning, I took a basket of laundry upstairs.

Brenda was in the blue bedroom, arranging things on the dresser.

She had placed a small framed photograph beside the lamp.

I recognized it as a picture of Gavin when he was younger.

He was standing beside his mother, both of them smiling.

"That was taken years ago," she said when she noticed me looking.

"He looks very young."

"He was a good boy."

I set the laundry basket on the floor beside the linen cupboard.

Brenda picked up the photograph and wiped a little dust from its frame.

"He used to tell me everything."

I did not answer.

She placed the photograph back on the dresser.

"Things are different now."

"People grow up."

"Of course."

She looked at me.

"But a mother is still a mother."

I understood that she wanted me to agree.

I also understood that she was asking me to accept a place beneath her in Gavin's life.

I did not want to compete with her.

I had never asked Gavin to choose between us.

"I don't think anyone is asking you to stop being his mother," I said.

Brenda's fingers rested on the edge of the dresser.

"Sometimes it feels that way."

"I'm sorry you feel that."

She studied my face, perhaps looking for something more.

I had no wish to be unkind.

But I could not take responsibility for a feeling that came from a situation I had not created alone.

I picked up the laundry basket.

"I'll put these away."

Brenda moved aside.

I opened the linen cupboard and placed the folded towels on the shelf.

The cupboard door closed with its usual soft click.

I went downstairs.

For the rest of the day, I kept to my normal routine.

I made lunch.

I answered a letter that had been sitting on my desk.

I checked the back door and watered the plant near the living room window.

I also made a point of leaving the property records in their proper place.

I no longer wanted important papers scattered across the hall table.

When Gavin came home that evening, he found me at the kitchen table with my notebook open.

He looked at the page.

"What are you doing?"

"Organizing the household expenses."

He pulled out a chair.

"Why?"

"Because I want everything together."

He leaned forward.

"Is this about what we talked about yesterday?"

"It's about keeping track of the bills."

He tapped the table with one finger.

"You don't need to do all that."

"I prefer to."

He looked at the notebook again.

"Are you trying to show me something?"

I closed it gently.

"No."

"Then why are you acting like you have to keep records of everything?"

I looked at him.

"Because these are my responsibilities, and I want to manage them properly."

He sat back.

"You make everything sound so formal."

"I don't think organizing bills is formal."

He gave a tired sigh.

"Claire, I don't want us to live like we're keeping score."

"Neither do I."

"Then stop making lists."

I felt the familiar pressure to explain myself.

I could have told him that I had been organizing bills for years.

I could have pointed out that the yellow tax notice had been on the hall table when Brenda's handbag was placed over it.

I could have reminded him that the house had not appeared by itself and that maintaining it required time and money.

But the notebook was not a weapon.

It was a notebook.

"I am not keeping score," I said. "I'm keeping records."

He looked annoyed.

"Whatever you want to call it."

I put the notebook in the desk drawer.

Then I returned to the kitchen.

Gavin remained at the table for a few moments before standing.

He went to the refrigerator and took out a bottle of water.

"Mom wants to rearrange the spare storage space upstairs," he said.

I turned toward him.

"Which space?"

"The cupboard near the blue bedroom."

"I already explained how the linens are organized."

"She wants a little room for her things."

I wiped my hands on a dish towel.

"We can talk about what space is available."

He frowned.

"Why does everything need a discussion?"

"Because it affects the way the house is organized."

"She's not asking to rebuild the place."

"I didn't say she was."

He closed the refrigerator.

"Just let her put a few things away."

I looked at him.

"She can use the space we've agreed on. If she needs more, we can discuss it."

He shook his head.

"You're making her feel as if she has to ask permission to breathe."

I felt a sharp sting behind my eyes.

I turned away for a moment and folded the dish towel.

When I faced him again, I spoke carefully.

"That isn't what I'm asking for. I'm asking that we decide together what changes in this house."

Gavin did not answer.

He took his water and went upstairs.

I stayed in the kitchen.

The conversation had left me feeling tired, but I did not regret what I had said.

I was beginning to see how quickly ordinary requests could become arguments about my character.

A cupboard became a question of whether I was welcoming.

A notebook became a question of whether I was keeping score.

A request for a conversation became proof that I was making trouble.

If I accepted those descriptions, I would never be able to discuss the actual decisions being made.

I finished cleaning the kitchen and turned off the light.

Then I went to the living room.

I sat in my usual chair and picked up my book.

The words were easier to follow that evening.

I read several pages before realizing that I had not thought about Gavin's reaction for some time.

That small stretch of peace felt unfamiliar.

I wanted more of it.

Not the kind that came from keeping quiet.

The kind that came from being able to live in my own home without rehearsing every sentence before I spoke.

I knew I could not create that kind of peace by myself.

But I could stop abandoning it before anyone else had asked me to.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: When Brenda Asked for More Room, I Finally Said We Needed an Agreement Instead of Another Decision Made Without Me

The next morning, I opened my notebook before making coffee.
