We didn't settle anything."

He pressed the buttons on the microwave.

"I don't understand why you keep bringing it up."

"Because the situation hasn't changed."

He leaned against the counter while the soup heated.

"Mom needs somewhere to stay. I told you that."

"And I told you I understand."

"Then what is the problem?"

I took a breath.

"The problem is that you brought her here without discussing it with me. Now she's unpacking, using the storage space, and making plans for the house. I still don't know whether this is temporary or permanent."

Gavin rubbed his forehead.

"You're making it sound much worse than it is."

"I'm telling you how it feels to me."

He looked toward the microwave.

The timer beeped.

He removed the container and carried it to the table.

I waited while he found a spoon.

He sat down and took a mouthful.

I sat opposite him.

"I need us to agree on some basic things," I said.

He continued eating.

"Such as?"

"How long Brenda is staying. Which spaces she's using. And how we're going to make decisions that affect both of us."

He put down his spoon.

"She has a bedroom. What else is there to decide?"

"Whether she is moving in permanently."

"I told you I don't know."

"Then can we agree to discuss it again on a specific day?"

He stared at me.

"You want me to put a date on it?"

"I want us to stop avoiding it."

He shook his head and returned to his soup.

I felt the old frustration rising.

I could hear myself becoming more careful with every sentence, as though a single wrong word would give him permission to dismiss the whole conversation.

So I stopped talking for a moment.

I let the silence remain.

When he finally looked up, I spoke again.

"I am not asking you to stop helping your mother."

"That's what it feels like."

"Then you aren't listening to what I'm saying."

His face hardened.

"Don't tell me what I'm doing."

I looked down at my hands.

The table had a small scratch near the edge, left by a heavy serving dish years earlier.

I had meant to repair it.

Instead, I had grown used to seeing it.

"I want you to hear me without treating every concern as an accusation," I said.

He pushed his bowl away.

"I work all day, Claire. I come home, and all I hear is another problem."

"I work at keeping this house running, too."

"You don't have a job to go to anymore."

The words landed harder than I expected.

He knew I had retired from school administration.

He knew I had spent years working toward that retirement.

He also knew the pension I received was part of how I paid the property expenses.

I had never expected him to praise me for managing the house.

But I had not expected him to use my retirement as a reason to diminish what I did.

"I may be retired," I said, "but I still have responsibilities."

He gave a short, impatient laugh.

"Here we go again."

I felt my cheeks grow warm.

I wanted to remind him that the property taxes did not pay themselves.

I wanted to tell him about the snow I had cleared, the repairs I had arranged, and the years I had spent making sure the house stayed in good condition.

Instead, I kept my voice steady.

"This isn't about who works harder. It's about respect."

He stood and carried his bowl to the sink.

"Respect goes both ways."

"I agree."

"Then respect my decision to help my mother."

"I can respect your decision to help her without agreeing that you can decide everything about my home on your own."

He turned around.

"Our home."

I looked at him.

"Then why do you keep calling it your house when we're arguing?"

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

For a brief moment, I thought he might finally consider the question.

Instead, he picked up his bowl again and put it in the sink.

"You're determined to make this about ownership."

"I'm asking you not to erase my part in it."

He stared at me.

Then he left the kitchen.

I heard him climb the stairs.

A door closed upstairs.

I remained at the table.

The conversation had not gone the way I hoped.

But I had said what I meant without shouting.

I had not apologized for asking a reasonable question.

And I had not allowed the conversation to become a list of my supposed faults without trying to bring it back to the actual issue.

Those things mattered, even if Gavin refused to acknowledge them.

I cleaned the table and wiped the counter.

Then I went to the desk and opened the drawer.

The property records envelope sat beside my notebook.

I removed the notebook and read the three lines I had written earlier.

Property papers together.

Keep track of household expenses.

Talk clearly about living arrangements.

I added another line beneath them.

Do not confuse keeping the peace with agreeing.

I stared at the sentence for a while.

It was simple enough to understand.

Living by it would be harder.

I put the notebook away and closed the drawer.

Upstairs, I could hear Gavin moving around.

Brenda's door opened.

Their voices drifted through the ceiling, but I could not make out the words.

I did not try to listen.

I went to the living room and sat beside the window.

The evening light had faded, leaving the glass dark enough to reflect the room.

I saw my own face in the window.

I looked tired.

Not because of the housework or the conversations themselves, but because I had spent so much time trying to make myself understandable to someone who seemed determined to misunderstand me.

I turned on the lamp beside the sofa.

The familiar light spread across the room.

I had bought that lamp years earlier because Aunt Madeline's old one had stopped working.

I remembered choosing it and carrying it home in the back of my car.

It had been a small decision, but it had been mine.

I looked around at the furniture, the curtains, and the photographs on the shelves.

My life was made up of thousands of such decisions.

They were not grand things.

They were ordinary choices made over many years.

I had never needed every choice to be approved by someone else.

I did not know why I had started behaving as though I did.

When I finally went upstairs, Gavin was already in bed.

He had turned off the light on his side.

I changed quietly and got under the covers.

Neither of us spoke.

I listened to the heating system come on.

Then I closed my eyes.

I still hoped we could find a way to resolve the situation.

But hope could not be the only thing I relied on.

I needed to trust my own judgment, too.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Began Writing Down Household Expenses Because I Wanted to See Clearly What I Had Been Carrying All These Years

Gavin came home just before seven.
