I haven't refused to share the kitchen. I haven't told her she can't use the towels."

"She says you keep reminding her that you own the house."

"Because you keep calling it your house."

His face changed.

He took a step toward me.

"I live here."

"So do I."

"That's not what I meant."

"Then tell me what you meant."

He rubbed his forehead.

For a moment, I thought he might answer honestly.

Instead, he glanced toward the stairs.

"Can we not do this right now?"

"We can talk tomorrow."

"Fine."

He walked into the kitchen.

I heard the refrigerator open, then close.

A cupboard door clicked shut.

He moved around for several minutes before returning to the living room with a glass of water.

I had picked up my book again, but I was not reading.

He sat in the chair opposite me.

"Mom needs somewhere to stay," he said.

I lowered the book.

"For how long?"

"I don't know."

"Has something happened to her current living arrangement?"

"She doesn't want to stay where she was."

"Why?"

Gavin looked irritated.

"Does there have to be a reason for every question?"

"If someone is moving into my house, yes, I think there should be a reason."

He set his glass on the table.

"She's my mother. I don't want her worrying about where she'll sleep."

"I understand that."

"Then let her settle in."

I looked at him.

"That's what I've been trying to understand. Are we talking about a visit, or is she moving in?"

He leaned back.

"Why does the label matter?"

"Because the arrangements are different."

"She's not a stranger."

"I never said she was."

He shook his head.

"You always do this. You take a simple situation and turn it into a problem."

I felt the familiar urge to explain every detail.

I wanted to list the suitcase, the robe, the bedroom, the storage cupboard, and the way he had stood in front of me when I first objected.

I wanted to prove that I had not created the discomfort.

But I knew how the conversation usually went.

I would give him an example.

He would explain why the example did not count.

I would offer another.

He would say I was keeping score.

By the end, we would no longer be discussing what had happened.

We would be discussing my attitude toward it.

So I kept my answer simple.

"I want us to make decisions about this house together."

Gavin stared at me.

"You're making it sound as though I'm doing something terrible."

"I'm telling you what I need."

"Your needs aren't the only ones that matter."

"I agree."

He seemed surprised by that.

I continued before he could change the subject.

"Your mother needs a place to stay. I understand that. But I need to know what we're agreeing to, and I need you to stop talking as if this house belongs to you alone."

His jaw tightened.

"I never said it belonged to me alone."

"You called it your house when I asked why Brenda was moving in."

"That was just an expression."

"It didn't sound like one."

He picked up his glass and took a drink.

Then he set it down harder than necessary.

"You're never going to let that go, are you?"

"I would like us to settle it."

"There's nothing to settle."

I looked at him for a long moment.

That was the problem.

He did not see a disagreement because he had already decided what would happen.

There was nothing to settle because he had not left room for me to have a say.

I took a slow breath.

"Then tell me this. How long do you expect your mother to stay?"

"I told you I don't know."

"Can we agree to talk about it again in a few days?"

He looked away.

"Why do we need a deadline?"

"Because I don't want us to avoid the conversation indefinitely."

He was quiet.

I waited.

Finally, he said, "We'll talk later."

I knew what that meant.

It meant not tonight.

It might mean not tomorrow.

It might mean the subject would disappear until I raised it again, at which point he would accuse me of bringing it up unnecessarily.

Still, I nodded.

"All right. Let's choose a time tomorrow."

He gave me a tired look.

"Claire, please."

"Tomorrow evening, then."

He stood.

"I have had a long day."

"So have I."

He stopped beside the chair.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he picked up his glass and carried it into the kitchen.

I remained in the living room.

I could hear him moving around, opening drawers and closing them.

After a while, the kitchen went quiet.

I picked up my book.

I read the same paragraph three times before I understood it.

Later, I went upstairs to get ready for bed.

The blue bedroom door was closed.

Light showed beneath it.

I heard Brenda speaking on the phone.

Her voice was low enough that I could not make out the words.

I did not stop to listen.

I went into my own bedroom and closed the door.

Gavin came in several minutes later.

He changed clothes without speaking.

Then he sat on the edge of the bed and removed his watch.

He placed it on the nightstand.

The strap made a small sound against the wood.

I was standing beside the dresser, putting away a sweater.

"Are we going to talk tomorrow?" I asked.

He looked at me in the mirror.

"We already talked."

"We talked about how you feel. We haven't agreed on anything."

He turned toward me.

"What do you want me to do, Claire?"

"I want you to listen to me without treating my questions as an attack."

He rubbed his face.

"I can't keep having these conversations every night."

"Neither can I."

He lay back against the pillows.

"Can we just get some sleep?"

I folded the sweater and put it in the drawer.

"Yes."

I turned off the lamp on my side of the bed.

The room became dark except for the faint light coming through the curtains.

I lay on my back and listened to the quiet.

Gavin's breathing gradually slowed.

I could not tell whether he had fallen asleep or was simply refusing to speak.

I did not ask.

I had spent too many nights trying to find the right words to make him understand something he did not want to discuss.

I had believed that if I stayed calm enough, explained clearly enough, and chose the right moment, he would eventually see what I meant.

Maybe he would.

But I could not keep making my peace depend on that possibility.

The house remained mine whether Gavin acknowledged it or not.

The deed did not change because he was angry.

The taxes did not become his responsibility because he called the property his home.

And my right to speak did not disappear because he was tired of hearing me.

I repeated those thoughts silently until I began to feel sleepy.

They were not solutions.

They were simply facts I needed to stop forgetting.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Stopped Waiting for Gavin to Decide When My Concerns Were Worth Hearing and Began Making Space for My Own Judgment

Gavin came home later than usual.
