It would be easier if I could use a little of the storage space."

"You can use the drawers in the blue bedroom."

"I will need more than that."

I glanced into the room.

Her second suitcase had been opened.

A pair of shoes sat on the floor beside the bed.

A small toiletry bag was on the nightstand.

She had already made the room look different.

"What else do you need?" I asked.

"I don't know yet."

She said it casually.

That was what bothered me.

There was no clear request I could accept or refuse.

There was only the sense that each small change would be followed by another.

I carried the towels to the cupboard and opened the door.

The shelves were full, but they were organized.

Bath towels were stacked on the top shelf.

Hand towels were folded in the middle.

Extra sheets occupied the bottom shelf.

I had arranged everything that way years earlier.

Brenda came to stand beside me.

"You really do keep everything in its place."

"I like knowing where things are."

"So does Gavin."

I turned toward her.

"Does he?"

She gave me a brief smile.

"He likes things done properly."

I looked back at the shelves.

There were many things Gavin liked done properly when he wanted them done his way.

I placed the towels on the middle shelf and closed the cupboard.

"There's room for your towels if you need some."

Brenda's smile disappeared.

"I don't want to be treated like a guest."

I felt my fingers tighten around the empty basket.

"I haven't called you a guest."

"You keep reminding me that this is your house."

"Because you keep asking for things without discussing them with me."

She looked away.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she picked up a sweater from the bed and folded it again, even though it was already folded.

"I don't want trouble between you and Gavin."

"Neither do I."

"Then perhaps we should try to make things easier."

I wanted to agree.

I wanted the house to return to its familiar rhythm, with ordinary conversations and meals that did not feel like negotiations.

But making things easier seemed to mean that I would have to keep giving way.

I would have to accept decisions after they had already been made.

I would have to act grateful that Brenda was allowing me to live alongside her belongings in the house I owned.

"I think we should talk to Gavin together," I said.

Brenda stopped folding.

"About what?"

"About how long you're staying and what arrangements we're making."

Her expression hardened.

"He's my son."

"I know."

"He shouldn't have to schedule visits with his own mother."

"I didn't ask him to schedule a visit."

"Then what are you asking?"

I looked at the open suitcase.

"I'm asking that we discuss a living arrangement before it becomes permanent."

Brenda folded the sweater and placed it inside the drawer.

"I'll speak to Gavin."

She said it as though she were the one who had been asked to make a difficult concession.

I carried my empty basket downstairs.

For the rest of the morning, I kept myself busy.

I washed the breakfast dishes that had been left in the sink.

I sorted a small pile of laundry.

I watered the plant beside the living room window.

The work gave me a reason not to walk past the blue bedroom again.

At lunchtime, I made a sandwich and sat at the kitchen table.

Brenda came down a few minutes later.

She had changed into another sweater.

She opened the refrigerator and looked inside.

"Are you making something?" she asked.

"Just a sandwich."

"Oh."

She moved a container from one shelf to another.

"Do you mind if I use some of the food?"

"Of course not."

"I don't want to take anything without asking."

I looked at her.

"You're welcome to use the food in the kitchen."

She nodded and took out a container of leftovers.

For a brief moment, I thought we might be able to speak normally.

Then she said, "Gavin told me you usually eat early."

"Sometimes."

"He thought it might be easier if we all had dinner together."

"That would be fine if we planned it."

She placed the container on the counter.

"I thought that was what we were doing."

"We haven't discussed it."

Brenda sighed.

"Claire, I really don't want every little thing to become difficult."

I set my sandwich down.

"I'm not trying to make things difficult."

"Then why do you keep saying we haven't discussed things?"

Because we hadn't, I wanted to say.

Because I was being told what would happen in my own home.

Because every conversation seemed to end with me apologizing for wanting to be included.

Instead, I took a breath.

"I think we understand the problem differently."

Brenda closed the refrigerator.

"Perhaps."

She heated her food and carried it upstairs.

I remained at the table.

The sandwich had begun to dry around the edges.

I ate it anyway.

After lunch, I went to the living room and sat near the window.

From there, I could see the front path and the driveway.

A few leaves had gathered near the edge of the steps.

I made a mental note to sweep them away later.

The ordinary details of the house continued to present themselves.

A loose cushion.

A faint mark on the coffee table.

A lamp that needed a new bulb.

I had always taken pride in noticing those things before they became problems.

Now I found myself looking around the room and wondering how many of the things I cared about would still be where I had left them by the end of the week.

I did not like that thought.

I was not ready to surrender every corner of my home to suspicion.

But neither could I ignore what was happening.

Brenda was unpacking.

Gavin had not asked me how I felt about it.

And I was spending my days trying to make myself smaller so the arrangement would seem easier for everyone else.

I stood up and walked to the hall table.

The mail had been moved into a tidy stack.

I had not moved it.

The yellow tax notice was no longer on top.

I checked the envelopes one by one until I found it.

It had been pushed underneath a grocery advertisement and a utility bill.

I removed it and placed it inside the property records envelope in my desk.

Then I returned to the hall table.

I straightened the remaining mail and left it there.

It was a small thing.

But I was beginning to understand how small things could become a pattern.

I would not know what any single change meant.

I would not turn every misplaced envelope into proof of something larger.

Still, I could notice what had happened.

I could remember where things belonged.

And I could decide what I was willing to accept.

That evening, I made dinner for myself.

I did not know whether Gavin would come home early or late, and I did not want to spend another night waiting for an answer he had not offered.

I ate at the kitchen table.

Then I washed my plate and put it away.

When Brenda came downstairs, she glanced at the clean counter.

"Did you make enough for everyone?"

"I wasn't sure when you wanted to eat."

She paused.

"I thought we were going to have dinner together."

"I would have been happy to if we had agreed on a time."

She studied me for a moment.

Then she opened the refrigerator.

"I'll find something."

I did not offer to cook another meal.

I did not apologize.

I went to the living room and picked up the book I had left beside the sofa.

For several minutes, I could not concentrate on the words.

Then I began reading again.

The house was still unsettled.

Nothing had been resolved.

But I had stopped treating every uncomfortable moment as something I had to repair by myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: When Gavin Came Home, I Asked for One
