suitcases.

Now she had boxes waiting in the car.

I walked to the front window and watched Gavin open the rear door of his vehicle.

He lifted a cardboard box and carried it toward the house.

Brenda stood beside him, pointing toward the entrance.

They worked together without looking in my direction.

I could not hear what they were saying.

I didn't need to.

They had already decided how the house would be used.

I was the only one who had not been included.

When they came inside, Gavin carried the boxes upstairs.

Brenda held the door for him.

I moved aside to let them pass.

One box brushed against my arm.

I caught a glimpse of folded fabric through a gap in the cardboard.

There were household items inside.

Not just clothes.

I watched them disappear up the staircase.

Then I walked to the desk in my study.

The room was small, with a wooden desk near the window and two shelves of books along the wall.

I used it for bills, tax documents, and the paperwork I had kept from my years in school administration.

The deed to 1420 Maple Avenue was in the lower drawer.

I knew exactly where it was.

I had placed it inside a plain folder after Aunt Madeline's estate had been settled.

I opened the drawer and moved aside several envelopes.

There it was.

The paper was slightly yellowed at the edges.

My name appeared on the document.

The property address was printed clearly.

I ran my finger along the edge of the page.

I wasn't searching for a surprise.

I knew what the deed said.

I needed to see it.

I needed something that hadn't changed just because Gavin had decided to behave as though it had.

The house belonged to me.

That fact had not disappeared overnight.

I returned the document to the folder and closed the drawer.

Then I sat at the desk.

For several minutes, I did nothing.

I thought about calling someone.

A friend.

A relative.

Anyone who could tell me whether I was overreacting.

But I could already hear the questions.

Hadn't Gavin always been generous with his mother?

Wasn't it natural for a son to help a parent?

Couldn't I spare a bedroom?

Those questions would make it sound as though the only issue was the room itself.

It wasn't.

The problem was that I had not been asked.

The problem was that Gavin had dismissed me when I objected.

And the problem was that Brenda had entered the house wearing my robe, carrying her luggage, and announcing which room she intended to occupy.

I could not explain all of that in a way that would make someone else understand how it felt.

So I stayed quiet.

That afternoon, I found Brenda in the living room.

She had moved one of the cushions from the sofa to the armchair.

A small box sat on the floor beside her.

She was sorting through papers.

“Do you need something?” I asked.

“I'm just organizing.”

“Would you like me to show you where things are kept?”

She looked up.

“I think I'll manage.”

I nodded.

I should have walked away.

Instead, I asked the question that had been troubling me since the previous afternoon.

“How long do you expect to stay?”

Her hands stopped moving.

She looked at me for a moment.

Then she placed the papers back inside the box.

“I don't know why you're asking me that.”

“Because I need to know what to expect.”

She leaned back in the chair.

“Gavin told me I could stay.”

“I understand that.”

“Then perhaps you should speak to him.”

“I have.”

“Then I don't see the problem.”

She said it without raising her voice.

That made it worse.

There was no anger I could answer.

No accusation I could challenge.

She simply treated my concern as something that did not concern her.

I looked at the box on the floor.

“I'm asking because this is my house.”

Brenda's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“Gavin lives here too,” she said.

“Yes.”

“And I'm his mother.”

“I know.”

She lifted her chin.

“Then I don't understand why you're making this so uncomfortable.”

I had no answer that would not turn the conversation into another argument.

So I left the room.

In the hallway, I stopped beside the small table.

The yellow tax notice was still there.

I picked it up and carried it to the study.

This time, I put it inside the folder with the deed.

Two pieces of paper.

One told me what I owed the local government.

The other reminded me what I owned.

Neither one could make my husband listen.

That evening, Gavin found me in the kitchen.

He leaned against the counter while I washed a plate.

“Mom says you made her feel unwelcome.”

I kept my hands under the running water.

“I asked how long she planned to stay.”

“You questioned her.”

“I asked a question.”

“You know how sensitive she is.”

I turned off the tap.

“Gavin, I can't keep pretending that this is normal.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he glanced toward the staircase.

“She's my mother.”

“I know.”

“She needs help.”

“Then tell me what's happening.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Why does everything have to become an argument?”

I stared at him.

Because I had asked him a simple question.

Because he had answered by making me feel guilty.

Because the woman living upstairs had never asked whether I agreed to share my home.

But I said none of those things.

I dried my hands.

“I want us to talk about this when we're both calm.”

He gave a short laugh.

“We're calm now.”

“No, we're not.”

His expression tightened.

For a moment, I thought he might shout.

Instead, he picked up his phone.

“I'm not doing this tonight.”

He walked away.

I heard his footsteps on the stairs.

Then the blue bedroom door closed.

I remained in the kitchen, listening to the silence that followed.

I had spent the entire day trying to find the right words.

It hadn't mattered.

Gavin had already decided that my objections were the problem.

And Brenda had already settled into the room I had never offered her.

I went into my study and opened the drawer once more.

The deed lay where I had left it.

I took it out and read my name again.

Then I folded the paper carefully and returned it to the folder.

For the first time, I understood that knowing I owned the house was not the same as knowing how to stand up for myself inside it.

I needed to stop waiting for Gavin to agree that I had a right to object.

He had shown me that he might never agree.
