You don't have to read it word for word. Just remember that you are allowed to finish a sentence."

I smiled a little.

It was such a simple thing.

Yet I knew exactly what she meant.

I often stopped speaking as soon as I sensed that someone might disagree.

I would watch the other person's face.

I would notice a sigh or a change in tone.

Then I would rush to make the conversation easier.

I had done it with colleagues.

I had done it with friends.

I had done it with Daniel most of all.

I wanted to practice letting my words stand.

"I'll try," I told her.

After we ended the call, I opened the notebook and read the page again.

I had come because I wanted to spend Christmas with you.

I was hurt when you told me to leave.

I understood you might have had plans, but I did not understand why you spoke to me that way.

I added one more sentence.

I want us to be able to talk about difficult things without either of us pretending they did not happen.

I read the page from the beginning.

It sounded fair.

It did not demand that Daniel agree with everything.

It did not tell him what he had to feel.

It simply explained what I needed from the relationship.

I folded the paper and put it away.

I was not going to call him just yet.

I wanted to sleep on it and see how I felt in the morning.

I had spent enough of my life acting quickly whenever I was afraid of losing someone's affection.

I wanted to make this choice from a calmer place.

That evening, I made dinner and sat down with a book.

This time, I managed to read several chapters.

I still thought about Daniel, but the thoughts no longer took over every minute.

I could read a page.

I could notice the room.

I could enjoy the warmth of the lamp beside me.

I could let my mind rest for a while.

It felt good.

I had not realized how much energy I was using to replay the same conversation.

Every time I remembered the door closing, I tried to find a different version of the evening.

In one version, I had called ahead.

In another, I had arrived earlier.

In another, I had left the food in the car and asked Daniel to come outside.

I had imagined dozens of ways I might have avoided the rejection.

But none of those imagined versions could change what had happened.

I could not rewrite the evening by blaming myself for every possible detail.

I could only decide what to do now.

After dinner, I washed my cup and wiped the counter.

Then I checked the telephone.

There was no message.

I felt disappointed.

I also felt ready to stop waiting for the phone to make the decision for me.

Daniel might call before I did.

He might not.

I would choose what to do based on what I believed was right, not on a secret test of whether he loved me enough to make the first move.

I went to bed and slept better than I had in several nights.

When I woke the next morning, the decision felt steadier.

I would reach out.

Not because I had given up on my own needs.

Not because I was ready to pretend everything was fine.

I would reach out because I wanted a chance to speak honestly with my son.

I made coffee and sat at the table.

Then I took my phone and opened Daniel's contact.

I did not press the call button immediately.

I read the sentences in my notebook one more time.

Then I placed the notebook beside the phone.

I wanted to remember that I could speak without attacking him.

I could listen without surrendering my point of view.

I could love him without agreeing that the way he had treated me was acceptable.

The telephone remained silent.

I had no idea whether Daniel was thinking about me.

I could not know whether he had regretted Christmas Eve or whether he believed he had done nothing wrong.

I would have to hear from him, or ask him, to know.

That was what a real conversation was for.

I did not want to invent his feelings for him anymore.

I wanted to let him speak for himself.

I also wanted to speak for myself.

Those two wishes could exist together.

I set the phone down and finished my coffee.

I decided I would call later in the day, when I had finished my errands and had enough time to talk.

There was no need to rush.

I was not trying to win a race.

I was trying to make a change in the way I had always approached my son.

For years, I had been quick to listen and slow to speak.

Now I wanted to do both.

I wanted to hear Daniel's side.

I wanted him to hear mine.

I wanted us to remember that a relationship was not a place where one person had to be comfortable all the time while the other swallowed every difficult feeling.

We could be uncomfortable.

We could disagree.

We could admit that we had hurt each other.

That did not have to mean the end of our relationship.

I hoped Daniel would understand that.

But I could not make him understand it before we spoke.

I could only bring my honesty to the conversation and see what happened.

For once, that felt like enough preparation.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: I Finally Reached for the Telephone Without Planning to Apologize, and I
