17 – I Had Finally Decided to Stop Chasing My Son, but I Still Had to Learn What to Do With the Love That Remained

The morning after I made that decision, I woke feeling both lighter and sadder.

I had not solved anything with Daniel.

I had not heard from him.

I had not found a way to make Christmas Eve hurt less.

But I had stopped telling myself that the entire situation was mine to repair.

That was a small change.

It was also a difficult one.

I made my coffee and sat at the kitchen table.

The telephone rested near the fruit bowl.

I looked at it once, then turned my attention to the window.

Outside, a neighbor was carrying a bag of groceries toward her house.

She paused to adjust the bag against her hip before climbing the steps.

I watched her until she disappeared inside.

Then I looked down at my hands.

They were the same hands that had prepared Christmas dinner.

They were the same hands that had wrapped the gifts and carried the covered dish to my car.

They were the same hands that had held Daniel when he was small and helped him through the ordinary troubles of growing up.

I had spent much of my life using those hands to take care of other people.

There was nothing wrong with that.

I was proud of the care I had given.

But I was beginning to understand that I could not use my hands to hold a grown child in a relationship he had to choose for himself.

I could not keep reaching toward him and expect that one day my effort alone would be enough.

I finished my coffee and cleared the table.

Then I went into the spare room.

The red gift bag sat on the shelf where I had left it.

I took it down and placed it on the bed.

I opened the top and looked at the packages.

The white name tags were still attached.

My handwriting looked neat and careful.

I remembered sitting at the table weeks earlier, deciding which gifts belonged to which person.

I had enjoyed that part.

I had imagined the children opening their presents.

I had imagined Daniel laughing at something one of them said.

I had imagined myself sitting nearby, watching the family enjoy the holiday.

Those memories had been good ones, even if the evening itself had ended badly.

I did not want to let the pain of Christmas Eve turn every act of love into something foolish.

I had chosen the gifts because I loved my family.

That was still true.

I put the packages back in the bag.

Then I carried it to the closet and placed it on the shelf beside the wrapping paper.

I was not throwing the gifts away.

I was simply putting them somewhere I did not have to see them every time I passed through the room.

There was no deadline for deciding what to do with them.

I could wait until I knew more.

For years, I had rushed to make things right whenever I sensed that someone was unhappy with me.

I wanted to learn how to pause.

I wanted to learn that not every uncomfortable feeling required an immediate solution.

Sometimes sadness needed time.

Sometimes a relationship needed an honest conversation.

Sometimes the answer was not available yet.

I closed the closet door and returned to the kitchen.

I had a few household chores to finish, so I made a list.

I needed to change the sheets.

I needed to pick up a prescription.

I needed to call about a small repair in the bathroom.

The list was ordinary.

That was what I wanted.

I did not want every hour of every day to revolve around Daniel's silence.

I wanted to return to my own life, even while I missed him.

After lunch, I took a walk.

I went a little farther than I had the previous time.

The air was cold, but the sun was out.

I passed the small park at the end of the street and watched two children running toward their mother.

One of them had dropped a mitten.

The mother picked it up and called after the child.

The child turned around, came back, and held out a hand.

The mother slipped the mitten on and brushed the child's coat.

I smiled before I could stop myself.

Then I felt the familiar ache.

I thought of Daniel when he was little.

I remembered holding his hand while we crossed streets.

I remembered checking his coat before he went outside.

I remembered the way he used to turn toward me when something frightened him.

There had been a time when I could comfort him simply by being there.

I had never imagined that being his mother would one day leave me wondering whether I was welcome.

I kept walking.

I did not try to push the memory away.

It was part of my life.

So was the disappointment.

I could carry both.

When I returned home, I made tea and sat by the window.

I thought about whether I should reach out to Daniel.

I had told myself I would wait until I was ready.

I wanted to be sure that I was not calling simply because I could not bear the silence.

But I also did not want pride to become another reason for us to remain apart.

There was a difference between refusing to chase someone and refusing to make any effort at all.

I needed to be honest about that difference.

If I waited only to see whether Daniel would call first, I might turn the situation into a test.

I did not want to test him.

I wanted to talk to him.

I wanted him to understand what had happened from my side.

I also wanted to hear what he had to say.

The problem was not that I wanted to speak.

The problem was that I had often used a conversation to make my own hurt disappear before the other person had acknowledged it.

I would begin by explaining myself.

Then I would soften my words.

Then I would reassure the other person.

By the end, I would be the one saying that everything was all right.

This time, I wanted to let the conversation be real.

I did not need Daniel to agree with every feeling I had.

I needed him to hear that I had been hurt.

I needed to hear whether he understood why.

I needed to know whether he was willing to treat me differently in the future.

Those were fair things to discuss.

I took the notebook from the drawer and read the short statement I had written earlier.

I had come because I wanted to spend Christmas with you.

I was hurt when you told me to leave.

I understood you might have had plans, but I did not understand why you spoke to me that way.

The words still felt right.

I folded the page and returned it to the notebook.

I decided I would give myself another day.

Not because Daniel had earned more time.

Not because I wanted to make him worry.

I simply wanted to make sure that I could speak without trying to force the conversation toward the ending I wanted.

I could not control whether he apologized.

I could not control whether he became defensive.

I could not control whether he understood me immediately.

I could control whether I spoke honestly.

That evening, I prepared a simple meal.

I ate at the table and cleaned the kitchen afterward.

I did not set out extra food.

I did not make plans around the possibility that Daniel might stop by.

If he wanted to visit, we could arrange a time.

If he called, I would answer if I was available.

If he needed help, I would consider what he asked for.

I would not assume that every request was a test of my love.

I would not assume that every refusal would end our relationship.

I was still learning to believe those things.

They did not feel natural yet.

Before bed, I checked the telephone.

There was no message.

I stood beside the counter for a moment, looking at the dark screen.

I missed Daniel.

I missed hearing about his day.

I missed the familiar feeling of being part of his world.

I wished he would call and tell me that he had been thinking about Christmas Eve.

I wished he would say that he had handled it badly.

I wished he would ask whether I was all right.

Those wishes remained.

I did not have to pretend otherwise.

But I could not spend the rest of my life trying to make another person give me the words I needed.

I turned off the kitchen light and went upstairs.

I had loved Daniel before he could speak.

I had loved him when he was difficult.

I had loved him when he was independent.

I loved him now, even though he had hurt me.

That love was not the problem.

The problem was what I had believed I needed to do to keep it close.

I could stop overextending myself.

I could stop apologizing for ordinary needs.

I could stop treating money as a way to prove that I belonged.

I could still love him.

And I could allow him to decide what he wanted to do with that love.

For the first time, I understood that letting go of control was not the same as letting go of my son.

It meant leaving room for him to make his own choice.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: I Had Rehearsed
