13 – I Was Still Hoping My Son Would Call, but I Was Finally Learning That Hope Could Not Do the Talking for Him

The next morning, I woke before the sun came up.

For a few seconds, I forgot about Christmas Eve.

Then I remembered the door, the snow, and Daniel's face when he told me to leave.

The memory came back so quickly that I sat up in bed.

I took a slow breath and looked toward the window.

The curtains were still closed.

The house was still quiet.

Nothing had changed overnight.

I got dressed and went downstairs.

The first thing I noticed was the telephone on the kitchen counter.

I had left it there the night before.

I wanted to check it, but I stopped myself.

I did not want my first act of the day to be searching for evidence that my son still cared about me.

That was how I had spent too many mornings.

I would check for messages before making coffee.

If Daniel had called, my mood improved.

If he had not, I found reasons to explain his silence.

Perhaps he had been busy.

Perhaps the children had kept him occupied.

Perhaps he had meant to call and forgotten.

I had become skilled at finding innocent explanations for disappointments that hurt me.

I still wanted to believe the best about him.

I did not want to lose that part of myself.

But I was beginning to understand that believing the best did not mean refusing to see what was happening.

I made coffee and stood by the kitchen window.

The street looked ordinary.

A neighbor was clearing something from the back seat of her car.

Across the road, a man carried a bin toward the curb.

I watched them for a moment.

Their ordinary routines reminded me that life continued even when a person felt stuck.

I wanted to feel that way again.

I wanted to wake up without wondering whether Daniel was disappointed in me.

I wanted to make plans without waiting to see if he needed something.

I wanted to stop measuring the value of a day by whether my son had made room for me in it.

Those wishes made me feel guilty.

Then I reminded myself that wanting a life of my own was not a betrayal.

I had loved Daniel since the day I first held him.

Nothing about Christmas Eve had erased that love.

But love could not require me to spend every morning waiting for permission to feel wanted.

After breakfast, I took my notebook from the drawer.

I turned to the page where I had written about what I could afford.

The figures were still there.

Some amounts were exact.

Others were estimates based on what I could remember.

I looked at the page without trying to add anything.

I was not interested in turning my son into a debt.

I wanted to understand my own choices.

For years, I had treated the money as though it came from a place that could never run dry.

I had told myself I could manage.

I had told myself that Daniel needed help more than I needed savings.

Sometimes I had been right.

Sometimes I had not known enough to judge.

But I had rarely stopped to ask what would happen if I continued giving at the same rate.

I had been so concerned about helping him through the present that I had given very little thought to my own future.

That had to change.

I did not know what expenses might come as I grew older.

I did not know how much the house would need in repairs.

I did not know how long my savings would have to last.

I could not assume that everything would work out simply because it always had before.

I closed the notebook and put it away.

I would look at the numbers again when I was ready to make a practical plan.

For now, I needed to stop confusing financial help with a promise that I would always be available.

Later that morning, Helen called to see how I was doing.

I told her I had slept better.

That was true.

I did not tell her that I had checked the telephone twice before getting out of bed.

I was still embarrassed by how much Daniel's silence affected me.

Helen asked whether I had heard from him.

"No," I said.

She did not fill the silence with advice.

After a moment, she asked, "What do you want to happen now?"

I had been asking myself the same question.

"I want him to understand that he hurt me."

"Have you told him?"

"No."

"Then he may not understand it the way you do."

I leaned back in my chair.

I knew she was right.

Daniel should have understood that sending his mother away on Christmas Eve would hurt her.

I did not think I needed to explain every part of that.

Still, I had spent years keeping my feelings hidden whenever I thought they might make him uncomfortable.

He could not respond honestly to feelings I refused to share.

That did not excuse what he had done.

But it showed me something about the conversation we would eventually need to have.

"I don't want to chase him," I said.

"Then don't chase him," Helen replied. "But if you want to speak, you can speak without chasing."

I thought about that after we hung up.

I had treated those two things as if they were the same.

Either I remained silent and waited for Daniel to come to me, or I called him and risked falling into the familiar pattern of apologizing for everything.

There was another choice.

I could reach out when I was ready.

I could tell him what had happened from my point of view.

I could ask him to speak with me honestly.

I could also accept that he might not give me the answer I wanted.

That last part was the hardest.

I could prepare the words.

I could choose the right moment.

I could try to keep my voice steady.

But I could not control how he would respond.

I could not make him apologize.

I could not make him understand.

I could only decide whether I was willing to speak truthfully.

That afternoon, I sat at the kitchen table and wrote a few sentences on a piece of paper.

I wrote that I had come to his house because I wanted to share Christmas with him and his family.

I wrote that being told to leave had hurt me.

I wrote that I understood he might have had plans, but I did not understand why he had spoken to me that way.

Then I stopped.

I did not write a speech.

I did not list every payment I had made.

I did not mention the gifts or the turkey as though he owed me gratitude for them.

I wanted him to hear the heart of the matter.

I had wanted to be welcomed by my son.

Instead, I had been made to feel ashamed for showing up.

That was enough to begin with.

I folded the paper and placed it in the notebook.

I was not going to send it.

I had written it for myself, to see whether I could say the truth without dressing it up in excuses.

Reading the words made my chest feel tight.

I could already imagine Daniel responding that I was being too sensitive.

I could imagine him saying that he had guests and did not want a scene.

I could imagine him explaining that I had arrived at a bad time.

Those explanations might be part of his experience.

They would not erase mine.

I wanted to remember that if the conversation became difficult.

I was allowed to have a different memory of the same evening.

I was allowed to say that I had been hurt.

I did not need to prove that my feelings were reasonable before I could speak about them.

In the late afternoon, I put the paper away and began preparing dinner.

I made enough for one person.

That small decision felt more significant than it should have.

For years, I had often prepared extra food because Daniel might stop by.

I had kept things in the refrigerator in case the children came over.

I had made room for visits that had not been planned.

Sometimes they came.

Sometimes they did not.

I had told myself that being prepared was part of being a mother.

There was nothing wrong with keeping food for people I loved.

But I had begun to treat every possibility of a visit as a promise.

If Daniel did not come, I felt disappointed.

If he canceled, I told myself he could not help it.

If he needed something else, I rearranged my day.

I had made myself available so often that I no longer knew when I was choosing to help and when I was simply afraid to refuse.

That evening, I cooked one meal and sat down to eat it.

I did not set out a second plate.

I did not leave the porch light on longer than usual.

I did not stare through the window every time a car passed.

I ate my dinner while it was warm.

Afterward, I washed the plate and put it away.

Then I checked my telephone.

There was still no message from Daniel.

I felt the familiar ache.

I let it be there.

I did not tell myself that it meant he had stopped loving me.

I did not tell myself that he would surely call tomorrow.

I knew neither of those things.

I was tired of using guesses to comfort myself and then feeling hurt when reality did not match them.

I could miss him without predicting what he would do.

I could love him without making excuses for him.

I could wait without putting my entire life on hold.

Before bed, I took the folded paper from the notebook and read it once more.

The words were plain.

They were not cruel.

They were not a demand.

They were simply true.

I returned the paper to the notebook and closed the drawer.

I still hoped Daniel would call.

I still hoped he would remember the woman who had raised him and understand that she had come to his door with love.

But I was beginning to accept that hope could not do the talking for him.

If we were going to repair what had happened, there would have to be a real conversation.

And I could no longer be the only person preparing for it.

<a
