11 – I Wanted to Believe Christmas Had Been a Terrible Mistake, but I Was No Longer Willing to Decide That on Daniel’s Behalf

The next few days passed without any conversation between Daniel and me.

I did not know whether he expected me to call.

I did not know whether he had thought about the way he had spoken to me.

I did not know whether he regretted it.

I only knew that I had not heard from him.

At first, the silence felt like a judgment.

I kept thinking that if I mattered to him, he would reach out.

Then I would remember that people did not always act according to what they felt.

I had seen that in my work.

I had seen parents who loved their children but struggled to show patience.

I had seen people who were frightened and took their fear out on the person standing closest to them.

I had also seen people who apologized and tried to do better.

I did not know which kind of person Daniel would choose to be.

I wanted to believe he had made a terrible mistake.

I wanted to believe that he had been distracted by his guests, that he had reacted badly, and that once he had time to think, he would understand.

I wanted to believe that because I loved him.

But love did not give me access to his thoughts.

It did not allow me to decide that he was sorry before he had said so.

And it did not require me to behave as though an apology had already happened.

That was a difficult lesson for a mother.

I had spent much of Daniel's life imagining the reasons behind his behavior.

When he was small, I could usually see what he needed.

If he was quiet, I checked whether something had happened at school.

If he was upset, I tried to find the source of it.

If he made a mistake, I helped him understand how to fix it.

As he grew older, I kept doing the same thing.

I looked for the reason behind his choices.

I tried to make sense of his moods.

I told myself that he was tired, worried, under pressure, or dealing with something I could not see.

Sometimes those explanations were probably true.

But explanations could become a hiding place.

I could spend so much time trying to understand why Daniel had hurt me that I never asked him to acknowledge the hurt itself.

I had done that after smaller disappointments.

I had done it when he forgot to call.

I had done it when he canceled plans at the last minute.

I had done it when I brought something over and he barely had time to speak with me.

I had always found a way to make the disappointment seem unimportant.

I told myself not to be sensitive.

I told myself that everyone was busy.

I told myself that a mother should not need so much attention.

Now I wondered how much of my silence Daniel had mistaken for satisfaction.

I had never told him that his canceled visits made me lonely.

I had never told him that I sometimes waited all afternoon for a call that did not come.

I had never told him that helping with the house had become difficult in certain months.

I had believed that if I told him those things, I would be placing a burden on him.

So I carried the burden alone.

Then I felt hurt when he did not notice it.

I could see my own part in that pattern.

I could acknowledge it without taking responsibility for the way he had treated me.

Both things could be true.

One morning, I went through the mail at the kitchen table.

There were ordinary bills, a grocery advertisement, and a card from a former colleague.

I read the card twice.

She had written that she hoped I was keeping well and that she still remembered the years we had worked together.

I smiled at that.

At school, I had not always been the person everyone noticed.

I was often in the background, doing the work that needed to be done.

But people had remembered me.

They had remembered that I listened.

They had remembered that I stayed calm when a child was frightened.

They had remembered that I took their concerns seriously.

I had not needed to buy their affection.

I had not needed to make myself useful every time I wanted to be included.

Our relationships had grown from years of ordinary trust.

I sat with the card in my hand and thought about how different that felt from the way I had begun measuring my relationship with Daniel.

I had let the money become a kind of language.

When he needed help, I knew what to do.

When he called, I could offer something.

When he was busy, I could make myself less demanding.

But I had never learned how to ask for closeness without offering a service in return.

That realization left me feeling exposed.

It also made something clearer.

If Daniel and I were going to have a better relationship, I could not build it entirely out of payments, favors, and holiday food.

He would have to want the relationship, too.

I would have to let him make choices instead of continually making the choices easier for him.

That did not mean I would refuse every request.

It meant I would consider each one honestly.

I would ask myself whether I could afford it.

I would ask whether I wanted to do it freely.

I would ask whether I was agreeing because I cared or because I was frightened.

The answers might not always be simple.

But at least I would be asking.

Later that day, I took the turkey dish from the refrigerator.

It had been stored safely, but I no longer wanted to keep it there as though the holiday were waiting to be completed.

I prepared the food for disposal and washed the dish.

The smell of the cooked turkey brought back the evening I had spent preparing it.

I remembered checking the oven.

I remembered wrapping the dish.

I remembered carrying it carefully so the food would arrive warm.

I had done those things with love.

Daniel's reaction did not change that.

I did not need to regret having wanted to share a meal.

I did not need to feel foolish for buying gifts.

Those choices had reflected the kind of mother I had wanted to be.

What I needed to change was the belief that I could control the outcome by giving more.

I dried the dish with a clean towel and placed it in the cupboard.

Then I washed my hands and stood by the sink for a moment.

I felt sad, but the sadness was different from the first few days.

At first, it had been tangled with shame.

I had wondered what was wrong with me.

Now I was beginning to see that someone else's unkind behavior was not proof that I was unworthy of kindness.

That did not make the hurt disappear.

It made the hurt easier to carry.

I thought about calling Daniel again.

The urge came suddenly, as it often did.

I wanted to ask whether he was all right.

I wanted to hear his voice.

I wanted to return to the familiar rhythm of asking about his day and listening to him describe whatever had occupied him.

I also wanted to know whether he had thought about Christmas Eve.

But I knew how easily I could lose my purpose once he answered.

If he sounded irritated, I might apologize.

If he sounded tired, I might tell him not to worry about anything.

If he asked me for help, I might forget why I had decided to wait.

I put the phone down.

I was not refusing to speak to my son.

I was giving myself time to understand what I wanted to say.

There was a difference between silence used as punishment and silence used to stop an old habit.

I did not want to punish Daniel.

I wanted to stop punishing myself by pretending I was not hurt.

That evening, I sat in the living room and looked at a photograph of Richard.

He was standing beside me in our backyard, one hand resting on my shoulder.

We had taken the picture years earlier.

Neither of us had known how much ordinary life we still had ahead of us.

I traced the edge of the frame with my thumb.

I wished I could ask him what he thought I should do.

But I could imagine his answer.

He would probably tell me to stop trying to solve everything in my head.

He would remind me that Daniel was a grown man.

He would tell me that loving someone did not mean doing their thinking for them.

Richard had not always agreed with the way I helped Daniel.

There had been times when he thought I was giving too much.

I had defended myself by saying that Daniel needed us.

Richard would look at me and ask whether Daniel was the only person in the family who needed care.

At the time, I had thought he was being too hard on our son.

Now I could hear the concern beneath his words.

Richard had wanted me to be generous.

He had also wanted me to be safe.

He had wanted me to have a life that did not depend on whether Daniel was pleased with me.

I wished I had understood that sooner.

Still, I could not change the years behind me.

I could only decide what I would do with the days ahead.

I put the photograph back on the shelf.

Then I turned off the living-room lamp and went to bed.

I did not know whether Daniel would call the next day.

I did not know what he would say if he did.

I did not know whether our relationship would return to the easy closeness I had once imagined we had.

But I was no longer going to write his apology for him in my mind.

If he was sorry, he could tell me.

If he wanted to understand, he could ask.

And if he did not know how much he had hurt me, I could explain it without apologizing for having feelings.

I wanted to believe Christmas had been a terrible mistake.

I still hoped that it had.

But hope could not be the only thing holding our relationship together.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Had Waited for Daniel to Notice My Hurt, but I Was Beginning to Understand
