7 – I Began Sorting Through Fourteen Years of Helping My Son, Not to Punish Him, but to Understand What I Had Never Allowed Myself to See

By the third morning after Christmas, I had stopped checking the telephone every few minutes.

I still noticed it whenever I entered the kitchen.

But I no longer picked it up just to see whether I had missed something.

That small change mattered to me.

For years, I had made myself available to Daniel without thinking much about it.

If he called, I answered.

If he needed help, I listened.

If a problem arose, I tried to find a solution.

I had been proud of that.

I thought it meant I was a dependable mother.

And I was dependable.

But I was beginning to understand that dependability could become a habit that other people relied on without ever considering what it cost.

I didn't want to become bitter.

I didn't want to look back at every kind thing I had done and decide it had been a mistake.

Helping Daniel had not been a mistake simply because he had hurt me.

I loved my son.

That remained true.

What I needed to understand was why I had made it so difficult for myself to admit when something was wrong.

I returned to the folder of financial records.

This time, I brought a notebook.

I wrote down the payments I could clearly identify and the dates associated with them.

I didn't try to fill in anything I couldn't remember.

I didn't guess at amounts.

I simply recorded what I knew.

It was slower work than I expected.

Some records were easy to understand.

Others required me to look through additional papers.

I took breaks whenever my eyes grew tired.

The point wasn't to build a case against Daniel.

I wasn't preparing to send him a bill.

I wanted a clear picture of my own finances and the commitments I had taken on over the years.

That was something I should have done earlier.

I had spent so much time worrying about whether Daniel could manage his responsibilities that I had paid less attention to how my own choices affected me.

I had been careful with my money.

I had saved where I could.

I had lived modestly.

But I had also made repeated contributions to his household for fourteen years.

Those payments had been part of my life for so long that I rarely thought of them as separate decisions.

I had treated them as a permanent duty.

I began to wonder whether Daniel had come to see them the same way.

I couldn't know what he thought.

I wasn't going to invent an answer because I was hurt.

But I could examine my own behavior.

Had I ever explained that I was helping because I wanted to, not because I had an unlimited obligation?

Had I ever told him what I could comfortably afford?

Had I ever said no when a request made me uneasy?

The answers were uncomfortable.

I had rarely explained myself.

I had often avoided saying no.

And when I worried that Daniel might be disappointed, I sometimes agreed before I had fully considered what I was agreeing to.

I had thought I was keeping the peace.

Perhaps I had been avoiding difficult conversations.

There is a difference.

I knew that now, although I wished I had understood it sooner.

I closed the notebook and went to the kitchen to make lunch.

While I prepared a sandwich, I remembered a conversation with Richard from years earlier.

He had asked whether I was sure I wanted to take on another expense for Daniel.

I had told him it was temporary.

Richard hadn't argued with me.

He had simply asked whether Daniel knew how much the help meant to our own budget.

I had said there was no need to worry him.

At the time, I thought I was protecting our son.

Looking back, I could see that I had also been protecting myself from the possibility that he might say he didn't need my help.

I didn't want to hear that.

I wanted to be needed.

I sat down with my lunch.

That was a difficult thing to admit, even privately.

I had loved Daniel long before he needed financial help.

I had loved him when he was a little boy who wanted me to sit beside his bed.

I had loved him when he was a teenager who insisted he could solve every problem alone.

I had loved him when he became a man and started building a family of his own.

My love had never depended on his needing me.

But somewhere along the way, I had begun using his needs as proof that I still had a place in his life.

I hadn't meant to do that.

I hadn't even recognized it.

Now I could see how easily those two things had become mixed together.

I wanted to help him because I loved him.

I also felt reassured when he needed my help.

Those feelings could exist together.

The problem was that I had allowed the second feeling to make decisions that should have been based on the first.

I finished my lunch and washed the plate.

Then I returned to the notebook.

I wrote a short list of questions.

What could I comfortably afford?

Which payments had I agreed to continue?

Which ones needed to be reviewed?

What would happen if I could no longer help?

I didn't answer every question that day.

I wasn't trying to solve fourteen years of decisions in one afternoon.

I simply wanted to begin.

Afterward, I placed the notebook inside the folder and put it away.

I felt calmer.

Not happy.

Not healed.

Just calmer.

There was relief in knowing that I could take a practical step without making an emotional decision.

I could examine my finances.

I could protect my own future.

I could decide what help I was able to offer.

None of those things required me to stop loving Daniel.

In the late afternoon, I took a walk to the mailbox.

The snow had begun to melt in places, leaving wet patches along the path.

I collected the mail and carried it inside.

There were advertisements, an ordinary envelope, and a bill.

Nothing important.

I sorted everything at the kitchen table.

Then I looked at the telephone again.

I still wondered why Daniel hadn't called.

I wondered whether he had thought about me at all since Christmas Eve.

I tried not to turn those questions into conclusions.

Silence could mean many things.

Perhaps he was avoiding an uncomfortable conversation.

Perhaps he believed I would eventually call and smooth everything over.

Perhaps he had convinced himself that he had done nothing wrong.

I couldn't know.

But I noticed something else.

I was no longer willing to make his silence my responsibility.

If he wanted to repair what had happened, he could take the first step.

I had done enough reaching out for both of us.

That evening, I prepared a simple dinner and ate at the kitchen table.

I looked toward the cupboard where I had put the red gift bag.

I hadn't decided what to do with the presents.

I still hoped the children would receive them somehow.

I didn't want to use the gifts as a way to make Daniel feel guilty.

They had been chosen with love, and I wanted them to remain that way.

I could find another time to give them to the children if things became easier between us.

For now, I would leave them alone.

I cleaned the kitchen and went into the living room.

Richard's photograph was still on the table.

I sat down beside it and thought about the kind of family life I wanted for the years I had left.

I wanted to see the children grow up.

I wanted to share meals with people I loved.

I wanted to be able to visit my son without wondering whether my presence would embarrass him.

Those weren't unreasonable wishes.

They also weren't things I could force Daniel to give me.

I could only decide what I was willing to accept.

That was the part I had avoided for too long.

I had spent years asking myself how to make Daniel comfortable.

Now I needed to ask how to live with dignity, even when he wasn't.

I didn't know what the answer would look like.

But I was finally willing to search for it.

Click here to continue reading: PART
