6 – I Had Always Been the One to Call First, but That Christmas I Left the Telephone Alone and Began Looking at Our Relationship Differently

The day after Christmas was quiet.

I woke up early again, but this time I stayed in bed for a while.

There was no reason to hurry.

I didn't have work to go to, and nobody was expecting me anywhere.

For thirty-one years, my mornings had belonged to the school.

I had learned to wake before the alarm, check the weather, and think about what the children might need that day.

Even after retirement, some of those habits remained.

I still liked having a plan.

I still felt uncomfortable when a day stretched out before me without a clear purpose.

That morning, I had no plan.

I got dressed and went downstairs.

The kitchen looked ordinary.

The turkey dish had been washed and put away.

The red gift bag remained in the cupboard.

I made coffee and sat near the window.

Snow covered the lawn.

A few footprints crossed the path leading to the mailbox.

I watched a neighbor carry a bag from his car into his house.

Then I looked at my telephone.

I wondered whether Daniel would call.

I didn't want him to call simply because he needed something.

I wanted him to call because he knew he had hurt me.

There was a difference.

I had spent years answering his calls with the assumption that whatever he needed could be worked out.

Sometimes he wanted advice.

Sometimes he needed help with an expense.

Sometimes he called just to talk, although those conversations had become less frequent as the years passed.

I had never made him feel guilty for asking.

I had told myself that a mother should be someone her child could depend on.

I still believed that.

But I was beginning to question what it meant to depend on someone.

Dependence was not the same as love.

And love was not supposed to require one person to ignore every hurt in order to keep the relationship alive.

I took a sip of coffee.

It had cooled while I was thinking.

I reheated it and returned to the table.

The telephone remained silent.

I told myself I wasn't going to spend the entire day waiting for it to ring.

So I decided to do something I had been putting off.

I opened the drawer where I kept household papers.

Inside were envelopes, receipts, instruction booklets, and documents I had promised myself I would organize someday.

I brought a small stack to the table.

I wasn't looking for anything in particular.

I simply wanted something to occupy my hands.

As I sorted through the papers, I came across several records connected to payments I had made over the years.

I recognized the dates.

Some went back a long time.

Others were more recent.

I placed them in a separate pile.

Then I continued sorting.

I wasn't preparing to confront Daniel.

I wasn't trying to calculate every dollar I had given him.

I only wanted to understand what I had committed myself to and what responsibilities I still carried.

That seemed sensible.

I had always kept receipts.

Richard used to tease me about it, but he knew I liked having the facts in front of me.

I didn't enjoy uncertainty.

I preferred to know where the money went and what still needed to be paid.

For years, however, I had treated the financial help I gave Daniel differently from the rest of my household expenses.

I didn't look at it too closely.

I knew what I was contributing, but I rarely stopped to consider how much the arrangement had become part of my life.

I had told myself that as long as I could afford to help, there was no reason to make an issue of it.

Now I wondered whether that approach had allowed me to avoid another question.

Was Daniel grateful for the help, or had he simply come to expect it?

I didn't know.

I had never asked him directly.

And I couldn't answer the question just because he had treated me badly at Christmas.

One cruel evening did not tell me everything about fourteen years.

But it did make me look at those years more honestly.

I gathered the papers and placed them in a folder.

I wrote a simple label on the front so I could find them again.

Then I put the folder in the drawer.

That was all I did.

No dramatic decision.

No angry phone call.

I wasn't ready to change anything about the financial arrangement.

I simply wanted to understand it.

The rest of the morning passed slowly.

I tidied the kitchen.

I watered the plants.

I made a list of groceries I would need later in the week.

Those ordinary tasks helped me feel as though I still had some control over my life.

At lunchtime, I called an old friend.

We talked about the weather and the holiday.

She asked whether I had enjoyed Christmas.

I paused.

I could have told her everything.

I could have explained how I had carried dinner to Daniel's house and been turned away.

Instead, I gave her a small answer.

"It was quieter than I expected."

She didn't press me.

We talked for a few more minutes, then said goodbye.

After I hung up, I felt disappointed in myself.

I had spent years encouraging other people to speak honestly when something was wrong.

Yet when someone asked me about my own life, I softened the truth until it barely resembled what had happened.

I wasn't ready to tell everyone.

But I needed to stop lying to myself.

Daniel had sent me away.

That was the truth.

I could love him and still acknowledge it.

I could hope we would repair our relationship and still admit that the damage was real.

I didn't have to choose between those things.

In the afternoon, I went for a short walk.

The air was cold, but the snow had begun to settle.

I walked carefully along the pavement, keeping my hands in my coat pockets.

A few houses still had Christmas decorations in their windows.

I thought about the children at Daniel's house.

I hoped they had enjoyed their presents.

I hoped they had been happy.

Whatever had happened between their father and me, I didn't want them to feel caught in the middle.

I wanted them to remember me as someone who loved them.

Not as someone who made demands.

Not as someone who expected them to take sides.

I could protect them from the details without pretending that my own feelings didn't matter.

That was something I was beginning to understand.

When I returned home, I made another cup of tea.

I sat at the kitchen table and opened the folder I had put away earlier.

I looked at the records for a few minutes.

Then I closed it again.

I wasn't ready to make financial decisions while I was hurt.

That would have been unfair to everyone, including me.

But I was ready to stop treating the subject as something I could never examine.

Money had become part of the way Daniel and I related to each other.

I couldn't ignore that simply because I wished things were different.

The afternoon faded into evening.

I made soup for dinner and ate it in the living room.

I turned on a lamp beside Richard's photograph.

For the first time since Christmas Eve, I allowed myself to imagine a future in which my relationship with Daniel might change.

I didn't know whether that change would be temporary or permanent.

I didn't know whether he would apologize.

I didn't know whether I would feel comfortable visiting his house again.

But I knew I couldn't return to the old arrangement simply because I was afraid of losing him.

I had to believe that there was a way to love my son without disappearing inside his needs.

That belief was new.

It was also frightening.

Before going to bed, I checked the telephone one last time.

There were no messages.

I set it on the counter and turned off the lights.

I didn't call Daniel.

For once, I let the silence remain where it was.
