This is Linda from the lottery office."

I sat straighter.

"Hello, Linda."

"I'm calling because we have reviewed the information you provided and need to clarify a few details about the ticket."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"All right."

"Do you have a moment to speak?"

"Yes."

Linda asked me to confirm the date I purchased the ticket.

I gave her the date I had recorded.

She asked where I bought it.

I named the convenience store.

She asked whether I had kept the receipt.

"Yes. I still have it."

"Please keep it with your records for now."

"I will."

There was a short pause.

Then she asked whether I had signed the back of the ticket before I discovered the winning numbers.

"Yes," I said. "I signed it and wrote the date and my note when I bought it."

"And you are certain that was before the claim was submitted?"

"Yes."

I heard typing on the other end.

Linda asked me to describe the note as accurately as I could.

I told her what I remembered writing.

I did not add anything.

I did not try to make the words sound more important than they were.

I simply described them.

"Thank you," she said. "That helps us keep the record consistent."

"Does that mean you've made a decision?"

"Not yet. I want to be clear about that. The review is still ongoing."

I closed my eyes briefly.

I had not realized how badly I wanted her to say the decision was finished.

"Is there anything else you need from me?"

"Not at this moment. Please keep your receipt and your notes available. If we need additional information, we'll contact you."

"All right."

"And Mrs. Dunn?"

"Yes?"

"Please continue to answer questions as accurately as you can. Don't guess if you don't remember something."

"I will."

"Thank you for your time."

The call ended.

I sat still for several seconds.

The washing machine hummed in the next room.

A truck passed outside, its tires making a soft sound on the road.

Nothing in the house had changed, but I felt as though I had been holding my breath and had finally been reminded to let it out.

I wrote down the date and time of the call.

I recorded the questions Linda had asked and the answers I had given.

I did not write that the office had decided in my favor.

It had not.

I did not write that Gary had lost his claim.

That had not been said either.

I wrote only what had happened.

Then I put the notebook back in the folder.

Gary came into the kitchen a few minutes later.

"Was that them?"

"Yes."

He stopped beside the table.

"What did they say?"

"They asked me to confirm the purchase date, where I bought the ticket, and what I wrote on the back."

He stared at me.

"Did they tell you anything else?"

"They said the review is still ongoing."

His jaw tightened.

"Did you tell them I bought it?"

"I told them what happened."

"That's not what I asked."

I met his eyes.

"I told them I bought the ticket, signed it, and wrote the date and note before the winning numbers were confirmed."

He pulled out a chair and sat down.

"So you repeated the same thing."

"Yes."

He looked at the floor.

"You could have told them that we were both excited and things got mixed up."

"That isn't what happened."

"You don't know what was going through my mind."

"You're right. I don't."

"Then why can't you give me the benefit of the doubt?"

"Because I can only answer questions about what I know."

He pressed his hands against the table.

"I was trying to protect us."

"From what?"

He looked up.

"From losing everything."

I felt a quiet ache in my chest.

"We hadn't lost anything when you took the ticket."

"We could have."

"We had won something. We were happy."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I didn't know what to do."

"You could have talked to me."

"I thought I was doing the right thing."

"You could have asked me to go with you."

He said nothing.

I waited, hoping he might finally answer the question beneath all the others.

Why had he taken something that belonged to me and claimed it was his?

Why had he told the office that my signature was a joke?

Why had he filed for divorce rather than admit that his actions had hurt me?

I did not ask all three questions.

I had asked them before.

I waited for him to speak.

He finally said, "I don't want to lose the money."

I looked at him.

"Neither did I."

"Then you should understand."

"I understand wanting security. I understand being afraid. I don't understand why you think those feelings make it all right to claim my ticket."

He leaned back in the chair.

"I don't know what you want me to say."

"The truth."

He looked away again.

The conversation ended there.

I made lunch.

Gary ate in the living room, and I ate at the kitchen table.

We did not speak about the call again that afternoon.

I put my phone on the counter while I cleaned the kitchen.

I did not expect another call that day.

When the evening came without one, I was not disappointed.

I had been given information, not a conclusion.

I could wait for the next step without inventing it.

After dinner, I sat at the table with the household notebook open in front of me.

The next insurance payment was due on Friday.

The electricity bill was due the following week.

The numbers were familiar.

They were ordinary responsibilities, the kind that had shaped our life together long before the lottery ticket.

I wondered how we would handle those responsibilities if the divorce went forward.

I wondered where I would live.

I wondered whether Gary would eventually speak honestly about what he had done.

None of those questions had an answer that night.

I closed the notebook.

Gary stood in the doorway.

"Are you writing more notes?"

"No. I'm checking the bills."

He glanced at the page.

"Oh."

He looked uncomfortable, as though he had expected me to be preparing another record of our disagreement.

I could not blame him for feeling uneasy.

But his discomfort did not mean I had done anything wrong.

He sat across from me.

"Did Linda seem to believe you?"

I considered the question.

"She asked me to confirm the details. She didn't tell me what she believed."

"But she has the writing on the ticket."

"Yes."

"And your receipt."

"Yes."

He looked down at his hands.

"So what happens now?"

"We wait for them to finish reviewing it."

He nodded slowly.

Then he asked, "What happens to us?"

I looked at him for a long time.

"I don't know."

"You never know anymore."

"I know what I need from you. I don't know whether you'll give it."

He swallowed.

For a moment, his expression softened.

"I never wanted us to become enemies."

"Neither did I."

"Then why does it feel like that's what we've become?"

"Because we're standing on opposite sides of something you won't talk about honestly."

He looked at me.

I wanted to reach across the table and take his hand.

I wanted to tell him that we could still find our way back to each other.

But I knew that if I offered comfort without acknowledging what had happened, we would return to the same place.

"I still care about you," I said. "That hasn't disappeared. But caring about you doesn't mean I can say something happened when it didn't."

He stared at the table.

"I wish things were different."

"So do I."

He stood and went upstairs.

I stayed at the table until the kitchen clock marked another minute.

Then I turned off the light and followed him.

I did not know what the lottery office would decide.

I did not know whether the divorce would become final.

But I knew the call had not changed my responsibility to speak truthfully.

It had only given me another chance to do so.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: The Part of the Story I Could Control

Monday morning, I woke to the sound of Gary moving around downstairs.
