It's been collecting leaves."

He nodded.

We drank our coffee.

For several minutes, neither of us mentioned the lottery office.

I wanted to believe that we might find a way to talk about ordinary things without treating them as a temporary break before the next argument.

Then Gary asked, "Have you been thinking about what I said yesterday?"

"Which part?"

"About getting back to normal."

I wrapped both hands around my mug.

"Yes."

"And?"

"I think we have to be honest about where we are before we can decide where to go."

He looked disappointed.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the answer I have."

He leaned back.

"I keep hoping you'll tell me there's still a chance."

"There is a chance for us to have an honest conversation."

"That's all you can say?"

"I don't know what our marriage will become, Gary. I can't promise you something you haven't helped make possible."

He stared at the table.

I regretted the pain in his face.

I did not regret the words.

Those were two different things, and I was learning to let them remain different.

After breakfast, we cleaned the kitchen together.

He wiped the counter while I put away the dishes.

When he reached the ceramic dish beside the fruit bowl, he picked it up to wipe beneath it.

I watched him turn it over in his hands.

"What?" he asked.

"Nothing."

He placed it back on the counter.

For a second, I remembered the ticket lying near that dish, almost hidden among the small things we left there.

Gary followed my gaze.

"I suppose you'll never forget where you put it."

"No."

"Even though I told you I was keeping it safe?"

"Yes."

He set the cloth down.

"You make it sound like I planned everything from the beginning."

"I haven't said that."

"But you think it."

"I think you took the ticket and claimed it was yours."

He shook his head.

"I was trying to protect what we had won."

"From whom?"

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

The silence was brief, but it was the first time he had seemed unable to find an answer before his anger arrived.

He picked up the cloth again.

"I don't want to do this today."

"Then we don't have to argue today."

He looked at me sharply.

"That's not what I mean."

"I know."

I finished drying the dishes and put them away.

The rest of the morning passed quietly.

Gary watched television in the living room.

I sat at the dining table with a book I had been trying to finish for weeks.

I read the same page twice without understanding it.

My mind kept returning to the lottery office.

Linda had told me the writing on the back of the ticket matched what I described.

She had also made it clear that the claim was still being reviewed.

That was all I knew.

I could not turn it into a promise that everything would end in my favor.

I could not turn it into proof of what Gary had intended before he took the ticket.

I knew what I had seen and done.

I knew what I had written.

The rest would have to be established through the process the lottery office was following.

That afternoon, Gary came into the dining room.

"Are you writing about me?"

I looked up from the book.

"No."

"You've been keeping notes."

"Yes."

"About our conversations."

"About the ticket and the things connected to it."

He pulled out a chair but did not sit.

"How can you think that's normal?"

"I don't think any of this is normal."

"Then why keep doing it?"

"Because I don't want to forget dates or details while this is being reviewed."

He shook his head.

"You don't trust your own memory?"

"I trust it enough to know that writing things down can help me stay accurate."

"Or help you build a story."

I put the book down.

"I'm not building a story, Gary."

"That's what it feels like."

"I can't control how it feels to you. I can only tell you why I'm doing it."

He stood there for another moment.

Then he went back to the living room.

I did not write down that conversation.

It had not changed anything about the ticket, the dates, or the claim.

I returned to my book.

Later, I prepared lunch.

Gary asked if I wanted him to make sandwiches.

I told him I had already started.

He took the cutting board and sliced the remaining tomatoes while I arranged the bread.

We worked side by side.

The knife made a soft, regular sound against the board.

For a few minutes, we were simply two people making lunch.

I wanted to keep that moment without pretending it repaired anything.

We ate at the table.

Gary spoke about a neighbor who had been repairing his fence.

I listened and asked a question.

He answered.

It was ordinary conversation, and I was grateful for it.

When we finished, he gathered the plates.

Then he stopped beside my chair.

"Do you remember when we bought this table?"

I looked at the scratched wooden surface.

"Yes. We spent half a Saturday putting it together."

"You kept saying one of the legs was crooked."

"It was crooked."

He almost smiled.

"You made me take it apart twice."

"Because it wobbled."

"It still wobbles."

We both looked at the corner where the table had always rocked slightly if someone leaned on it.

For a moment, we laughed.

The sound surprised me.

It was small and short, but it was real.

Then Gary's expression changed.

"I miss that."

I knew what he meant.

"I miss it too."

"Can't we have more days like this?"

"We can have days when we talk and eat and remember things. But that doesn't answer the question about the ticket."

He lowered his eyes.

"There it is again."

"I didn't bring it up. You asked me about us."

He carried the plates into the kitchen.

I stayed seated until I heard the water running.

I had once believed that keeping peace meant finding a way to avoid the subject that hurt.

Now I understood that peace built around a lie was not the same as peace.

The rain stopped before dinner.

Gary went outside to check the drain, and I followed with a small bucket for the leaves.

We worked without speaking much.

He cleared the grate while I gathered wet leaves from the edge of the patio.

The air smelled of damp earth.

When we finished, he leaned on the handle of the rake.

"Do you really think I'm a bad person?"

I put the leaves into the bucket.

"I think you've done something that hurt me deeply."

"That's not what I asked."

"I don't know how to answer a question that asks me to judge your whole life based on this."

He looked at the wet grass.

"Sometimes I think you see nothing good in me anymore."

"I remember the good things, Gary."

"Then why can't you trust me?"

I took a breath.

"Because remembering what was good doesn't change what happened."

He looked away.

We carried the tools back to the shed.

Neither of us spoke until we reached the door.

Inside, the old shelves smelled of wood and soil.

Gary hung the rake on its hook.

I put the bucket down.

For a second, I thought he might say something more.

Instead, he closed the shed door.

That evening, I received no call or message from Linda.

I checked my phone once after dinner and then put it away.

I would not spend the entire evening watching a screen.

Gary sat at one end of the sofa.

I sat at the other.

The television played a program neither of us followed closely.

After a while, he said, "If the lottery office decides in your favor, what happens to us?"

I looked at him.

"I don't know."

"You must have thought about it."

"I've thought about the claim. I've thought about the divorce. I've thought about what I can and can't control."

"And the money?"

"Of course I've thought about the money."

He waited.

"I haven't decided what my life will look like after this," I said. "The claim hasn't been resolved, and neither has our marriage."

He rubbed his hands together.

"So you're just waiting."

"I'm living while I wait."

He looked at me as though the distinction offended him.

But it mattered to me.

I had stopped treating every unanswered question as a reason to put my life on hold.

When I went upstairs that night, I checked the folder once.

Everything was in place.

I closed the drawer.

The rain had left a thin line of water against the window frame, and I wiped it with a tissue.

Then I turned off the light.

I could not tell whether Gary would ever answer the question I kept asking.

But I could stop asking it in ways that allowed him to avoid hearing it.

The truth did not need a different shape every time I spoke.

It was still the same truth.

And I was still the same person who had bought the ticket.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: When the Call Finally Came

Sunday morning began with rain.
