They said they might need more information."

He put the spoon down.

"You always say that."

"Because that's what they told me."

"I know what they told you."

"Then why are you asking me to say something different?"

He looked toward the window.

"I was hoping you might be able to look at this another way."

I waited.

He rubbed his thumb along the handle of his mug.

"We're both under a lot of pressure. Maybe we're making things worse by assuming the worst."

I looked at him carefully.

"Which part do you think I'm assuming?"

He gave a small, tired sigh.

"Patricia, please."

I had heard that word so many times lately that it had started to feel like a door closing.

I set my mug down.

"I am not assuming anything about the writing on the ticket. I know what I wrote. I know when I bought it. And I know what happened after we discovered the numbers."

"I've told you what happened."

"You've told me your version."

His expression hardened.

"So now everything I say has to be called a version?"

"When it conflicts with what I remember, yes."

He pushed his chair back slightly.

I thought he might leave the table, but he stayed.

"You don't seem to understand what this is doing to us."

"I understand that very well."

"Do you?"

"Every morning, I wake up in this house and remember that my husband took something I bought and told other people it belonged to him."

He looked down at his hands.

"And every morning, I have to decide whether I'm going to pretend that didn't happen just to make breakfast easier."

For a while, the only sound was the clock.

Gary finished his coffee and carried the mug to the sink.

He rinsed it even though there was almost nothing left inside.

Then he left the kitchen.

I stayed at the table.

I did not follow him.

For years, I had believed that if one of us walked away from an argument, the other should try to bring the conversation back to a peaceful place.

Sometimes that was sensible.

Sometimes it only meant that the person who wanted honesty was expected to chase the person who avoided it.

I was tired of chasing.

After breakfast, I opened the drawer where I kept household bills.

The electricity statement had arrived, along with a reminder about the car insurance payment.

I wrote both amounts in my household notebook.

I had started keeping that notebook long before the lottery ticket appeared.

It contained dates, amounts, and the ordinary calculations that helped us get through the month.

The separate folder beside my bed contained the facts surrounding the ticket.

I did not mix the two.

The bills were our shared life.

The folder was the record of a dispute that had changed it.

I checked the date on the insurance notice and placed it near Gary's side of the counter.

He came through the kitchen a little later.

"What's that?"

"The insurance reminder. It's due next week."

He picked it up.

"All right."

"I wrote the amount in the notebook."

He looked at me.

"You don't have to keep telling me every little thing."

"I was just letting you know."

"I can read a bill, Patricia."

I felt the familiar urge to apologize.

The words rose automatically, almost before I knew I was thinking them.

Then I stopped.

"Okay," I said.

He waited for more.

When nothing came, he folded the notice and put it in his pocket.

That afternoon, I went to the grocery store.

I needed bread, eggs, milk, and a few other things.

I took my usual reusable bags from the cupboard.

At the door, I glanced back toward the kitchen counter.

The ceramic dish was still beside the fruit bowl.

I remembered placing the lottery ticket there after I bought it.

At the time, it had been nothing more than a small piece of paper.

I had not imagined that I would eventually remember the exact place where it rested, the ordinary items surrounding it, and the way the kitchen looked when I told Gary the numbers matched.

I had thought the important part would be winning.

I had been wrong.

At the store, I pushed the cart through the aisles and compared prices.

A woman near the dairy section was talking on her phone about a birthday cake.

A child asked his father for a box of cereal.

The cashier at the next register laughed at something a customer said.

Life continued in small, unremarkable ways.

I was grateful for that.

At the checkout, I paid for my groceries and put the receipt in my purse.

I did not examine it three times.

I did not imagine that I might need to explain why I had purchased eggs or which bag had held the bread.

I simply put it away.

When I got home, Gary was sitting in the living room with the television on.

He turned the volume down when I entered.

"Did you get everything?"

"Everything on the list."

He watched me carry the bags into the kitchen.

I put the cold items away first.

Then I placed the bread in its usual spot and set the receipt beside the household bills.

Gary appeared in the doorway.

"I've been thinking."

I stopped arranging the cupboard.

"About what?"

"About us."

I waited.

He crossed his arms.

"I don't want every conversation to be about the ticket."

"Neither do I."

"Then we need to stop doing this."

"Doing what?"

"Going around in circles."

I closed the cupboard.

"Then we need to agree on what happened."

His mouth tightened.

"We don't have to agree on every detail to move forward."

"Some details matter."

"Why can't we just wait for the lottery office to finish?"

"We can wait for them. That doesn't mean we have to stop being honest with each other."

He shook his head.

"You always bring it back to honesty."

"Because that's what this is about."

"No, Patricia. It's about money, and it's about what money does to people."

I looked at him.

"The money didn't make you take the ticket."

He turned away.

I watched him walk back into the living room.

For a moment, I considered following him and explaining myself again.

Instead, I finished putting away the groceries.

That evening, we ate at the kitchen table.

I had made a simple dinner, and Gary complimented it.

I thanked him.

We discussed a program on television, the weather forecast, and whether the grass needed cutting.

Our conversation was polite.

It was also fragile.

I could feel the things we were avoiding sitting between us.

After dinner, Gary carried his plate to the sink.

He stood beside me while I washed the dishes.

"I never thought we'd end up like this," he said.

Neither had I.

"I didn't either."

He leaned against the counter.

"Do you think we can get back to normal?"

I rinsed the plate in my hands.

"I don't know what normal would look like now."

"We've been married a long time."

"I know."

"We've been through difficult things before."

"Yes."

"And we've always found a way."

I placed the plate in the rack.

"Usually, we found a way because we eventually talked honestly about what happened."

He stared at the floor.

"So you don't think we can fix this."

"I think we could try. But trying can't mean pretending."

He was quiet.

Then he said, "I don't know what you want me to say."

I dried my hands on the towel.

"I want you to tell the truth without asking me to make it easier for you."

He looked at me for several seconds.

Then he went upstairs.

I finished the dishes alone.

Later, I took the folder from my bedside drawer and checked its contents.

The store receipt was there.

My notes were there.

The dates I had written down were there.

I had not added anything since Friday.

I closed the folder and returned it to the drawer.

I was not trying to build a case against my husband by collecting every ordinary thing he did.

I was trying to keep the facts straight while the person I had trusted most kept asking me to question them.

That distinction mattered to me.

Before going to bed, I stood in the doorway and looked at Gary.

He was lying on his side, facing away from me.

I changed clothes and slipped beneath the covers.

Neither of us spoke.

I listened to his breathing and wondered whether he was awake.

I wondered whether he was thinking about the ticket, the divorce, or the years we had spent together.

I could not know.

For once, I did not try to guess.

I turned off the lamp and let the room go dark.

The truth was still sitting between us.

I could not carry it into his hands and force him to hold it.

I could only refuse to put it down and pretend it had never been there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Question He Wouldn’t Answer

Saturday morning arrived without a call from Linda.
