We can still decide how we treat each other.”

He looked at the table.

“And how do you think we're treating each other?”

“I think we keep having the same argument because we aren't agreeing about what happened.”

He rubbed his thumb along the handle of his mug.

“I don't want to keep fighting.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then maybe we should stop talking about the ticket.”

I felt the familiar pull toward agreement.

If I said yes, perhaps we could have a quiet weekend.

Perhaps we could eat dinner without the tension.

Perhaps I could forget the dispute for a few hours.

But the ticket would still be at the center of the claim.

Gary would still have made his statement.

The divorce would still be moving forward.

Silence could give us a break from arguing, but it could not resolve any of those things.

“We can stop arguing about it,” I said. “But I can't pretend it doesn't exist.”

He sighed.

“You always need the last word.”

“I don't need the last word. I need us to stop acting as though the problem is that I remember what happened.”

He stood and carried his coffee to the counter.

I watched him set the mug down.

For a moment, I thought he might answer.

Instead, he left the kitchen.

I remained at the table.

I was not proud of the argument.

I was not looking for a way to win.

I was tired of trying to choose between a quiet house and an honest conversation.

I wanted both.

I wanted a home where we could disagree without turning each other into enemies.

I wanted to be able to ask a question without being told that I was ruining everything.

And I wanted Gary to understand that refusing to lie was not the same as refusing to love him.

I spent the rest of the morning doing ordinary chores.

I wiped the counters.

I cleaned the kitchen window.

I swept the floor beneath the table, where small crumbs had collected near the chair legs.

When I moved Gary's chair, I noticed a folded piece of paper underneath it.

It was an old grocery list.

The writing was mine.

I picked it up and looked at the items: milk, bread, apples, coffee.

There was nothing unusual about it.

I threw it away.

Then I returned the chair to its place.

I thought about how much of our life had been made up of small lists.

Things to buy.

Things to repair.

Things to remember.

I had often written those lists without thinking about them.

They were a way to make sure that ordinary life continued.

Now, I was learning that the larger parts of life also needed honesty and care.

You could not keep a marriage running simply by paying the bills and buying the groceries.

You could not repair a broken hinge by pretending it was straight.

And you could not repair trust by demanding that the person who had been hurt stop talking about it.

I finished sweeping and put the broom away.

At noon, I made a sandwich and ate it beside the window.

Gary had left the house again.

I did not know whether he would return for dinner.

I made enough food for two because that was still our routine.

If he did not come home, I could put the extra portion away.

It was a small decision, but I liked that it did not require me to guess what he was thinking.

I could prepare dinner without making it a test of our marriage.

I could be considerate without asking for anything in return.

In the afternoon, I received a message from the lottery office.

It did not contain a decision.

It asked me to remain available in case further information was needed.

I read it twice.

Then I saved the message and wrote down the date.

That was all I did.

I did not call Gary to tell him.

He would receive whatever communication was meant for him, and I would respond to the office if they contacted me again.

I did not want every update to become another argument between us.

The claim was still unresolved.

The message did not say anything more than that.

I put the phone down and returned to the kitchen.

I stood by the counter, looking at the ceramic dish.

I remembered how I had placed the ticket there after buying it.

I remembered the ordinary things that had been beside it.

A receipt.

Some loose change.

A grocery list.

I had not hidden the ticket.

I had not prepared for a dispute.

I had simply brought it home.

I knew that memory was not a substitute for the written details on the ticket.

But it was still my memory, and I did not need Gary's agreement to know what I had done.

I could remember the event without turning it into an argument.

That was a relief.

For weeks, it seemed as though every recollection had to be defended.

If I remembered something, Gary said I was interpreting it incorrectly.

If I repeated what he had said, he told me I was making him sound bad.

If I asked him to explain, he accused me of refusing to move forward.

I had started to feel as though even my own memories belonged to him.

They did not.

The truth was not something we could divide according to who was more upset.

It did not become less true because Gary disliked hearing it.

That evening, he came home while I was setting the table.

I looked up.

“Dinner will be ready in ten minutes.”

“All right.”

He washed his hands and went into the living room.

I finished preparing the food.

We sat down together and ate.

Halfway through the meal, Gary asked, “Did you get any messages today?”

I looked at him.

“Yes. The lottery office sent me a message.”

His fork stopped.

“What did it say?”

“They asked me to remain available in case they need more information.”

“Does that mean they're making a decision?”

“No. It didn't say that.”

He put his fork down.

“Did you respond?”

“No response was needed.”

He leaned back.

“You could have told me earlier.”

“I was going to tell you if there was something important to discuss.”

“How do you know it isn't important?”

“Because the message only asked me to remain available.”

He shook his head.

“You keep deciding what I need to know.”

“I am telling you what the message said.”

He looked at me for several seconds.

Then he picked up his fork.

We finished dinner without speaking.

Afterward, I washed the dishes while he sat in the living room.

I did not feel triumphant about the message.

I did not feel defeated either.

It was simply another part of the process.

The lottery office had not decided the claim.

Gary had not changed his story.

I had not changed mine.

The situation remained where it was.

But I was beginning to understand that I could live through uncertainty without allowing it to dictate every thought I had.

I could continue with my routines.

I could keep my records accurate.

I could be civil to Gary without pretending we were fine.

And I could wait for an answer without waiting for him to become someone else first.

Later that night, I sat on the edge of the bed while Gary brushed his teeth.

I heard the bathroom tap run and then stop.

He came into the room and set his phone on the nightstand.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he said, “I wish you would trust me again.”

I looked at him.

“I wish I could.”

He sat down on his side of the bed.

“Is there anything I can do?”

The question was quiet.

I had waited so long to hear something like it that I almost answered too quickly.

I wanted to tell him exactly what he could do.

I wanted to ask him to admit that I bought the ticket.

I wanted him to tell the lottery office the truth.

I wanted him to stop treating my questions as attacks.

But I knew that a list of instructions would not create honesty if he did not want to be honest.

So I answered carefully.

“You can tell the truth about what happened.”

He stared at the floor.

“I've told you what happened.”

“No, Gary. You've told me what you want me to accept.”

He did not answer.

I felt the sadness rise again.

I had hoped the question meant he was ready to face the problem.

Perhaps he was not.

Perhaps he wanted reassurance without having to admit what had happened.

I could not know.

He lay down and turned away from me.

I turned off the lamp.

The room became quiet.

I thought about the question he had asked.

Was there anything he could do?

Yes.

But I could not do it for him.

I could not supply the honesty he had withheld.

I could not restore trust by pretending it had never been damaged.

And I could not save our marriage alone.

I lay still and listened to the quiet sounds of the house.

The kitchen clock was too far away to hear from the bedroom.

The refrigerator hummed faintly through the wall.

Tomorrow, I would make coffee again.

I would check the mail.

I would answer if the lottery office called.

I would keep the folder where I could find it.

I would not know the final outcome yet.

But I no longer believed that my whole life had to remain suspended until Gary made a different choice.

The lottery office had its own process.

The divorce had its own path.

My feelings had their own truth.

I could wait for the first two without surrendering the third.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Truth Was Still Sitting Between Us

Friday passed without a call from Linda.
