Friends? Anyone?”

“No.”

He watched me closely.

“Not even one person?”

“No, Gary.”

He put his phone on the table.

“Good.”

The word bothered me more than I expected.

Not because I wanted to tell everyone what had happened.

I had kept the dispute private because it was personal, and because I did not want gossip making an already difficult situation worse.

But Gary had said good as if my silence had been something he was entitled to expect.

“Why are you asking?” I said.

“I don't want people getting involved.”

“I don't want that either.”

“Then we agree.”

“On that, yes.”

He picked up his phone again.

I poured my coffee and sat down.

For a few moments, I watched the steam rise from the mug.

Then I asked, “Would you tell me if someone asked you about the ticket?”

He looked up.

“What kind of question is that?”

“A simple one.”

“I'd tell them it was a private matter.”

“Would you tell them you bought it?”

He set his phone down again.

“Why do you have to keep doing this?”

“I asked a question.”

“You already know what I think.”

“I know what you've told me.”

He stood.

“This is exactly why I can't talk to you.”

He left the kitchen before I could answer.

I sat there for a while.

I had not wanted an argument.

I had wanted to understand whether we were keeping the dispute private because we both believed that was best, or because Gary expected me to protect his version of events.

The difference mattered.

Privacy could be a choice we made together.

Silence demanded by one person was something else.

I finished my coffee and opened the drawer where I kept the household papers.

I took out the notebook and turned to a clean page.

I wrote down the date and the conversation.

Then I stopped.

I did not want to fill the notebook with every small disagreement we had.

I wanted it to remain useful.

I thought about what had happened and decided to record only the important parts: Gary had asked whether I had told anyone about the ticket, and he had said he did not want people involved.

I left out my thoughts about the way he had said good.

Those thoughts mattered to me, but they were not the same as the facts of the conversation.

I closed the notebook and returned it to the drawer.

Later that morning, I went to the grocery store.

I bought coffee, bread, apples, and a few things for dinner.

The cashier handed me the receipt without asking whether I wanted it.

I folded it and put it in my purse.

On the way home, I thought about how strange it was that I had become so aware of receipts.

Before the win, I had kept them because I liked to know what I had spent.

Now, every receipt reminded me of the ticket.

I did not want to live like that forever.

I wanted a time when I could buy groceries without thinking about evidence.

But I could not rush that time into existence.

I drove home, put the groceries away, and made myself a cup of tea.

The kitchen was quiet.

I sat at the table and looked at the ceramic dish beside the fruit bowl.

There was a single coin in it.

I picked it up, turned it between my fingers, and put it back.

The dish had been there for years.

We used it for spare change, receipts, and the small things that needed a place until we decided what to do with them.

It had no special meaning.

Yet it had become part of the memory of the ticket because that was where I had left it when I brought it home.

I did not know whether Gary remembered that detail.

I did.

In the afternoon, he came into the kitchen while I was sorting the mail.

He picked up a grocery advertisement and glanced at it.

“Are you going to the store again tomorrow?”

“No. I bought what we need.”

He nodded and put the advertisement down.

Then he looked at the drawer.

“Are you still keeping those notes?”

“Yes.”

He shook his head.

“I don't understand why you need to do that.”

“Because I don't want to forget what happened.”

“You could just remember it.”

“I could.”

“Then why keep writing it down?”

I placed the mail in a neat pile.

“Because this matters, and I want to be accurate.”

He leaned against the counter.

“You think I'm going to deny everything?”

“I don't know what you'll say later.”

His expression hardened.

“You really don't trust me at all.”

“I trusted you when you told me you would keep the ticket safe.”

He looked at the floor.

I continued before I could lose my nerve.

“I trusted you when you took it. I trusted you to tell the lottery office the truth. I trusted you because I thought we were sharing the win.”

He did not move.

“I don't know what you expected me to do when you claimed you bought it,” I said. “But I can't pretend that didn't happen.”

He took a slow breath.

“You keep making me sound like a terrible person.”

“I'm telling you what happened between us.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said, “Maybe we should stop talking about this.”

“Maybe we should stop arguing about it. That's not the same as pretending it never happened.”

He picked up his keys and walked out.

I heard the front door close.

I remained beside the counter, feeling the weight of the conversation.

There were things I still wanted to say.

I wanted to remind him of the years before the ticket, when we had made decisions together and trusted each other without needing to prove anything.

I wanted him to understand that I had not suddenly become suspicious for no reason.

But he knew the facts.

The problem was not that I had failed to explain them.

The problem was that he wanted a different answer.

That evening, we ate dinner in the kitchen.

Gary asked whether I had seen the mail he had left on the table.

I told him I had sorted it.

He asked whether the water bill was due soon.

I said it was already paid.

We spoke about those ordinary matters without difficulty.

I wondered whether he thought that meant the rest could be forgotten.

I could not tell.

After dinner, I went to the bedroom and opened the closet.

I needed a sweater that had been pushed behind a row of shirts.

While I searched, I noticed the small box where I kept old cards and photographs.

I took it down and set it on the bed.

Inside were birthday cards, a few photographs from trips, and notes we had exchanged years earlier.

I looked through them slowly.

There was a photograph of Gary and me standing beside the house not long after we had moved in.

The paint looked newer.

The yard was smaller because the bushes had not grown yet.

We were both smiling.

I sat on the bed with the photograph in my hand.

I did not feel angry when I looked at it.

I felt sad.

I could remember that day clearly.

We had been tired from unpacking, and Gary had joked that the kitchen was so small we would have to take turns opening the refrigerator.

I had laughed so hard that I had leaned against him.

The memory was still real.

The fact that he had made a terrible choice now did not mean that every good thing between us had been false.

I put the photograph back in the box.

I did not want to throw away our history.

I also did not want to use it as a reason to ignore the present.

I returned the box to the closet and put the sweater on the chair.

When I came back downstairs, Gary was sitting in the living room.

He looked up.

“Where have you been?”

“Looking for a sweater.”

He nodded.

Then he asked, “Do you still think we could fix this?”

I sat in the chair across from him.

“I don't know.”

“You used to say we could get through anything.”

“I believed that.”

“And now?”

“Now I think both people have to be willing to be honest.”

He rubbed his hands together.

“I never thought a lottery ticket would destroy our marriage.”

“Neither did I.”

“Then why can't we just put it behind us?”

I looked at him.

“Because it hasn't been put behind us. It's still happening.”

He stared at me.

I continued in a quiet voice.

“You filed for divorce. You claimed the ticket. You asked me to change what I told the lottery office. I can't make those things disappear just because we wish they hadn't happened.”

He leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

“I don't want everyone knowing our business.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then help me keep it private.”

“I will keep it private where I can. But I won't lie about it.”

He sat back.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he stood and went to the bedroom.

I remained in the living room, listening to the television in the background.

I had answered him honestly.

I still wanted to believe that our marriage might be repaired.

But I could not make that happen by promising silence.

The next morning, I woke with a clearer understanding of what privacy meant to me.

I did not need to tell everyone about the ticket.

I did not need to explain my marriage to people who had no reason to know about it.

I could keep my personal life private and still answer questions truthfully when they mattered.

Those choices were not in conflict.

I made coffee and sat at the kitchen table.

The cabinet door remained crooked.

The ceramic dish sat beside the fruit bowl.

The household bills were paid.

The folder remained in the drawer.

Nothing about the kitchen had changed.

I had changed, though.

I was no longer willing to believe that loyalty meant accepting someone else's account of events when I knew it was wrong.

I could care about Gary without giving him control over what I remembered.

I could hope for peace without surrendering the truth.

And I could wait for the lottery office without treating the wait as a reason to give in.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Gary Kept Talking About Our Marriage as Though the Ticket Were the Only Problem, but I Could No Longer Separate His Choices From Their Consequences

On Wednesday morning, I found Gary standing beside the kitchen table with his phone in his hand.
