Something that helps us get past it.”

I closed the calendar.

“Getting past it isn't the same as resolving it.”

“You have an answer for everything.”

“No. I have questions that still need answers.”

He made a small sound of frustration and opened the refrigerator.

He stood there looking inside without taking anything out.

Then he closed the door.

“I can't keep living under suspicion.”

I looked at him.

“I can't keep being asked to ignore what happened.”

He did not answer.

He took his coffee and left the room.

I remained by the calendar.

The conversation had followed the same pattern as all the others.

He had asked whether I was doing something.

When I answered, he had turned the answer into another problem.

I could spend the entire day trying to find the perfect words.

I could make every sentence gentle and every question small.

It would not change the fact that he wanted me to stop asking.

I decided to stop trying to make him understand how reasonable my questions were.

I would ask what needed to be asked.

I would answer honestly when someone asked me.

And I would not treat his discomfort as proof that I had done something wrong.

After lunch, I took the notebook from the drawer.

I reviewed the dates I had written down.

The Wednesday of the purchase.

The day we checked the numbers.

The morning Gary said he would keep the ticket safe.

The call from Linda.

The conversation about the divorce.

I noticed that my notes became clearer when I wrote them soon after something happened.

The details were easier to remember.

I could separate what had been said from what I had felt.

I added a short note about the morning's conversation.

Then I closed the notebook.

I was not trying to build a case against Gary in my mind.

I was trying to make sure I did not lose track of the truth while he continued telling me I had misunderstood him.

In the afternoon, I went to the grocery store.

I bought bread, milk, eggs, and a bag of apples.

The cashier asked whether I wanted the receipt.

“Yes, please.”

I folded it and put it in my purse.

The small movement made me think of the lottery ticket again.

It had started with a purchase so ordinary that I had barely noticed it.

I had bought the ticket along with the other things I needed.

I had not planned a future around it.

I had not expected it to change my marriage.

At the time, I had simply been a woman going home with groceries and a lottery ticket in her bag.

I wished I could return to that Wednesday.

Not because I wanted to give the ticket back.

I wished I could return to the moment before I understood how much Gary's behavior would change.

I wanted the happiness of those first few minutes, when we both believed we had been given an unexpected chance.

I knew I could not have that moment again.

When I came home, Gary was sitting in the living room.

He looked at the grocery bags.

“Did you get everything?”

“Everything on the list.”

“Did you get coffee?”

“Yes.”

He nodded toward the kitchen.

I carried the bags inside and put everything away.

For a few minutes, we spoke about ordinary things.

He asked whether I had seen the weather forecast.

I told him rain was expected over the weekend.

He said he would move a few things from the backyard if the forecast looked worse.

It was the kind of conversation we had once taken for granted.

I found myself wondering whether he noticed the difference between these small exchanges and the conversations about the ticket.

Perhaps he thought that if we could still discuss groceries, we could pretend the rest was manageable.

Perhaps he simply preferred subjects that did not require him to explain himself.

I did not ask.

Later, he came into the kitchen while I was putting away the last of the dishes.

“Patricia, I need to know whether you're going to fight me on this.”

I dried my hands.

“On what?”

“The ticket.”

“I am going to tell the truth about it.”

He shook his head.

“That isn't what I asked.”

“It is the answer I can give you.”

He stood still, looking at me.

“Do you really think money is worth all this?”

“No.”

“Then why keep pushing?”

“Because I didn't start this by claiming the ticket was mine.”

He looked down at the floor.

For a moment, he seemed tired rather than angry.

I remembered that look from earlier years, when something had gone wrong and he did not know how to talk about it.

In the past, I would have moved closer.

I would have asked what was wrong and offered to help.

I still felt the impulse.

But I did not know whether he was tired because he regretted what he had done or because things were not going the way he wanted.

I could not answer that question for him.

He looked up.

“You're not the person I thought you were.”

I took a slow breath.

“I could say the same thing.”

His expression changed.

He seemed to have expected me to deny it, or to tell him I was still the same woman who would do anything to keep the peace.

I did not add anything.

He left the kitchen.

I finished putting the dishes away.

The conversation stayed with me, but it did not undo the decision I had made.

I was not going to chase him through the house trying to explain that I still cared about him.

I did care.

I cared about the years we had shared, the home we had built, and the person I had believed he was.

Those feelings were real.

They did not require me to surrender my own judgment.

That evening, I sat at the kitchen table and paid the bills that were due.

I checked each amount and wrote the payment dates in the notebook I used for household expenses.

I had kept that notebook for years.

It contained ordinary records of the life we had shared: electricity, water, groceries, car repairs, and small purchases that added up over time.

Looking through it reminded me how much of our life had been built through repeated acts of care.

I had not kept those records because I expected a reward.

I had kept them because someone had to remember what needed doing.

I wondered whether Gary had ever understood how much of our ordinary life rested on things that went unnoticed.

I could not know.

I only knew that I had done those things willingly, and that they had mattered.

I closed the notebook and put it away.

When I went to bed, Gary was already lying on his side, facing away from me.

I changed into my nightclothes and turned off the lamp.

The room became dark.

I listened to the quiet sounds of the house.

I did not reach across the bed to touch his shoulder.

I did not ask whether he was awake.

I had spent too many nights trying to find the right moment to make everything feel normal again.

That night, I let the silence remain.

I was not punishing him.

I was allowing myself to rest without taking responsibility for a conversation he had chosen not to have.

In the morning, I would still be Patricia Dunn.

I would still know where I bought the ticket.

I would still know what I had written on its back.

And I would still be waiting for the lottery office to finish its work.

Nothing about Gary's disappointment could change those facts.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: When Linda Finally Called Again, I Understood That the Ticket’s Small
