I thought you would see it.”

He gave me a look I could not quite read.

Then he carried it to the table and opened it.

I went back to my coffee.

He read the contents without speaking.

When he finished, he put the pages down and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

“What does it say?” I asked.

“It says what I expected.”

“Which is?”

“That things are moving forward.”

I looked at the pages.

“Are there things I need to know?”

“Not yet.”

I took the chair across from him.

“Gary, if we're getting divorced, I need to know what's happening.”

He tapped the papers against the table to straighten them.

“You'll know when there's something you need to know.”

“That isn't how this works.”

“Apparently, you know everything about how this works now.”

I felt the old urge to defend myself.

I wanted to explain that I had never wanted to learn about divorce papers.

I had never wanted to study the language of a separation or think about what it meant to divide a home.

I wanted to tell him that I had expected to grow old with him.

But I had already said those things in different ways.

He had heard me.

He simply did not want those feelings to interfere with what he had decided.

“I'm not trying to make this difficult,” I said.

“You don't have to try.”

He gathered the papers.

I watched him carry them into the other room.

The envelope remained on the table.

I put it in the drawer with the other household documents, not because I wanted to hide it, but because it belonged with the things we would need to keep track of.

I was beginning to understand that the divorce was not a single event.

It was a collection of decisions, documents, conversations, and things we would have to face even when we did not want to.

The lottery claim was another collection of unresolved facts.

Neither could be settled by pretending the other did not exist.

Later that morning, I sat down with my notebook.

I wrote the date at the top of a clean page.

Then I recorded the arrival of the envelope and the conversation that followed.

I included his words as accurately as I could remember them.

I did not add what I thought he meant.

That distinction mattered to me.

For years, I had filled in the gaps whenever Gary failed to explain himself.

If he was quiet, I assumed he was tired.

If he was irritated, I assumed he was under pressure.

If he changed a plan without telling me, I assumed he had a good reason.

Sometimes those assumptions had been fair.

Other times, they had allowed me to overlook things I should have questioned.

I could not rewrite the past, but I could stop confusing an explanation with an excuse.

At noon, I made soup from what was left in the refrigerator.

I ate at the kitchen table and looked out at the small backyard.

The grass needed cutting.

A few dry leaves had collected near the fence.

Gary used to complain when I let the leaves pile up.

He would say the yard looked neglected, then forget about it until I brought it up again.

I had always thought of those little arguments as harmless.

They were the ordinary irritations of sharing a home.

Now, I wondered how many times I had mistaken keeping the peace for solving a problem.

I finished the soup and rinsed the bowl.

Then I heard Gary coming down the hallway.

“Patricia, we need to talk.”

I dried my hands.

“Okay.”

He sat at the kitchen table.

I sat opposite him.

He placed both hands flat on the surface.

“I don't want this to turn into a war.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then we should be able to agree on some things.”

“Which things?”

He looked annoyed that I had asked.

“The practical things.”

I waited.

“The house, our belongings, the money we have now.”

I felt my shoulders tighten.

“What money do you mean?”

“The money in our accounts.”

“Our regular accounts?”

“Yes.”

I had not expected that question to come up so soon.

I knew what we had in our household accounts, at least roughly.

I knew which bills were due and what we had saved.

But the winning ticket was still unresolved, and I did not want him slipping it into a conversation about ordinary savings as though the matter had already been settled.

“I can discuss our existing accounts,” I said. “But I won't agree that the lottery money belongs to you.”

He leaned back.

“I never said it belonged only to me.”

“You told the lottery office that you bought the ticket.”

“I told you what I meant.”

“You told them you bought it.”

He looked down at his hands.

“You're determined to hear it that way.”

“I'm repeating what happened.”

He was silent for a moment.

Then he said, “We are married. That has to count for something.”

“It counts for a great deal.”

“Then why are you acting like we're strangers?”

“Because you're asking me to accept a claim you made without telling me.”

He shook his head.

“You keep coming back to the same point.”

“Because you keep asking me to move past it.”

He pushed his chair away from the table.

“I can't talk to you when you're like this.”

I watched him leave.

The conversation had not lasted long.

It had still left me feeling tired, as though I had spent hours arguing.

I sat alone for several minutes.

Then I opened the notebook and wrote down what had been said.

I did not try to make it sound worse than it was.

I did not need to.

The facts were troubling enough.

That afternoon, I received no call from Linda.

I checked my phone once, then put it on the counter.

I did not want to spend every minute waiting for it to ring.

The uncertainty was difficult, but I knew that repeatedly checking the screen would not make an answer arrive sooner.

I went outside and picked up the dry leaves near the fence.

The air was cool, and the grass felt damp under my shoes.

I worked slowly, gathering the leaves into a small pile.

When I was done, I stood beside the fence and looked back at the house.

It was not a large place.

The paint around the back door had begun to peel, and the kitchen window needed cleaning.

We had never been rich.

Before the lottery win, I had measured security in ordinary ways: bills paid on time, a little money left after groceries, a roof that did not leak.

The thought of two point four million dollars had made all those concerns seem small.

For a few days, I had imagined what we might do with it.

I had pictured repairing the house, taking a trip, and setting aside enough that neither of us would have to worry about every unexpected expense.

I had imagined sitting across from Gary at the kitchen table and planning our future together.

I had not imagined sitting across from him while he tried to claim the ticket as his own.

I went back inside and washed my hands.

The house was quiet.

I put the kettle on and made tea.

Then I sat by the window with my notebook closed beside me.

I thought about the marriage before the ticket.

There had been good years.

There had been laughter, small celebrations, and evenings when we sat together without needing to say much.

I did not want to erase those memories just because the present had become painful.

But the good years could not answer the question in front of me.

They could not make Gary's claim true.

They could not make his divorce filing disappear.

And they could not require me to surrender something I had bought simply because we had once promised to share our lives.

When Gary came home that evening, he asked what I had made for dinner.

“Pasta,” I said.

He nodded and went to wash his hands.

We ate without discussing the papers.

Afterward, he watched television while I put the dishes away.

The familiar sounds filled the house.

The television murmured from the living room.

The faucet dripped once before I tightened it.

The kitchen clock kept time.

I realized that I had been waiting for some dramatic moment when everything would become clear.

I had imagined a conversation in which Gary finally admitted what he had done.

I had imagined him apologizing, explaining himself, and asking me to forgive him.

Maybe I had imagined those things because they would have made the situation easier to understand.

But I could not make an apology happen by waiting for it.

I could not make honesty happen by asking the same question in a different way.

I had to live with what I knew.

Before bed, I checked that the front door was locked.

Then I returned to the kitchen and looked at the drawer where I kept the folder.

I did not take it out.

I did not need to read the receipt again.

I knew what it said.

I knew where I had bought the ticket.

I knew what I had written on the back.

And I knew what Linda had confirmed when she called.

Those facts did not resolve the claim.

They did give me something solid to stand on while I waited.

Click here to continue reading: PART
