A car passed outside. Somewhere in the walls, the old pipes made a soft knocking sound.

Everything was familiar.

That was what made it strange.

My husband had filed for divorce, the winning ticket was being disputed, and I still had to decide what to make for breakfast.

I got out of bed and pulled on my old blue sweater.

Gary was already in the kitchen.

He stood by the counter with his phone in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.

He looked at me, then looked away.

“Morning,” I said.

“Morning.”

I opened the cabinet and took down a mug.

The cabinet door never closed properly. I had asked Gary to fix the hinge more times than I could count.

He always said he would get around to it.

That morning, I pushed the door shut with my hip and poured my coffee.

Neither of us mentioned the divorce.

Neither of us mentioned the lottery office.

For a while, the only sound was the kitchen clock.

Then Gary set his phone on the counter.

“Have you been thinking about what I said yesterday?”

I looked at him.

“You said a lot of things yesterday.”

“I mean about us.”

I took a sip of coffee.

“I have been thinking about us for years.”

His expression tightened.

“That isn't what I asked.”

“I know.”

He pulled out a chair and sat down.

I remained standing beside the counter.

He seemed to expect me to sit across from him, as I usually did when we had a serious conversation.

For years, I had treated those conversations like meetings I needed to prepare for.

I would choose my words carefully, explain my intentions, and try to keep him from getting upset.

That morning, I did not feel like doing any of those things.

“Patricia, we can't keep living like this.”

“I agree.”

He looked surprised.

“Then maybe we can finally make some decisions.”

“Which decisions?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“The house. The divorce. Everything.”

“The lottery claim is still unresolved.”

His hand dropped.

“There it is again.”

“It's still there, Gary.”

“You make it sound like it's the only thing that matters.”

“You brought the ticket to the lottery office and claimed it was yours.”

“I told you what happened.”

“You told me what you wanted me to believe.”

He stood up so quickly that his chair scraped across the floor.

“I'm not doing this first thing in the morning.”

“Then don't.”

He stared at me.

I had said it without raising my voice.

For once, I had not followed the sentence with an apology.

He picked up his phone and walked out of the kitchen.

I heard him go down the hallway.

A moment later, the bedroom door closed.

I finished my coffee beside the sink.

My hands were shaking a little, but I was not frightened of the conversation itself.

I was frightened by how easily he had turned every question into an accusation.

If I asked about the ticket, I was obsessed with money.

If I asked about the divorce, I was refusing to accept reality.

If I asked why he had gone to the lottery office without me, I was treating him like a criminal.

There was always a reason my question was wrong.

There was never a reason he had to answer it.

After breakfast, I took the folder from the drawer where I had been keeping it.

I placed it on the kitchen table.

Inside were the store receipt, my handwritten notes, and the dates I had recorded since the winning numbers were confirmed.

The receipt was ordinary.

It had faded slightly along the fold, and one corner had been bent when I put it in my purse.

I had almost thrown it away.

I remembered standing in the kitchen that Wednesday, emptying my purse onto the counter.

The receipt had been mixed in with a grocery list and a small piece of paper with two phone numbers written on it.

I had kept it because I kept most receipts until I checked them.

That habit had never seemed important before.

Now, I was grateful I had not changed it.

I read the notes again.

I checked the dates.

Then I added the time Linda had called and the exact words I could remember from our conversation.

I did not write that Gary was a liar.

I did not write that he had betrayed me.

I wrote what he had done and what he had said.

That seemed more useful.

When I finished, I put the pen down.

I had spent years writing shopping lists, household expenses, and reminders about things Gary wanted me to remember.

I had never imagined keeping a record of conversations with my own husband.

The thought made my stomach turn.

But the record was not there because I wanted to hurt him.

It was there because I no longer trusted him to tell the story fairly.

Around ten, I heard him moving around in the bedroom.

He came into the kitchen carrying a stack of papers.

He placed them on the table beside my folder.

“What are those?” I asked.

“Documents we need to look at.”

I did not touch them.

“About the divorce?”

“Some of them.”

“Are any of them about the lottery claim?”

He let out a long breath.

“Can you stop asking that question?”

“Can you answer it?”

He pulled out the chair and sat down.

“Not everything has to be connected.”

“Then it should be easy to explain what each paper is.”

He looked at the folder.

“What's that?”

“My notes.”

“Your notes about what?”

“What has happened.”

His eyes moved from the folder to my face.

“You're keeping records of me now?”

“I'm keeping records of what happened.”

“That is unbelievable.”

“I hope I won't need them.”

He laughed once, without humor.

“You really think I'm trying to cheat you.”

“I think you told the lottery office that you bought the ticket.”

“I told them we were married.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“It is when you're talking about money in a marriage.”

“Then why did you tell them you bought it?”

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

For a moment, I thought he might answer.

Instead, he pushed the papers toward me.

“Just look at these.”

I glanced at the top page.

It contained information about the divorce process and some of the things that would have to be discussed if we continued.

I read the heading twice.

The words looked strangely formal for something that involved the person who had slept beside me for years.

“Do you want me to sign anything?” I asked.

“Not right now.”

“Then I'll read them.”

He leaned back in his chair.

“You're making everything harder than it needs to be.”

“I am reading papers about my marriage. That doesn't seem unreasonable.”

“You used to trust me.”

I looked at him.

“I did.”

He seemed to wait for me to say more.

I did not.

I could have listed all the ways I had trusted him.

I had trusted him with money, with plans, with decisions about the house, and with the quiet details of daily life.

I had trusted him when he said he would take care of something.

I had trusted him when he said he was tired, busy, or worried.

I had trusted him because I believed marriage meant that two people could rely on each other without keeping score.

But trust was not a rule that required me to ignore what I could see.

It was not a promise to stop asking questions whenever the answers became uncomfortable.

Gary gathered the papers into a neat stack.

“I'm going out.”

“Where?”

He looked at me sharply.

I almost apologized out of habit.

Then I stopped myself.

“You don't have to tell me,” I said. “I was only asking.”

He put the papers under his arm.

“I have things to do.”

“All right.”

He left without another word.

I heard the front door close.

I stayed at the table until the sound of his car faded.

Then I looked down at the folder again.

The receipt was still there.

The notes were still there.

Whatever Gary said about me, those small things had not changed.

I did not know what the lottery office would decide.

I did not know how the divorce would proceed.

I did know that I had bought the ticket, and I had written on the back of it before the money became real.

I could not make Gary tell the truth.

I could only stop pretending I had forgotten mine.

By lunchtime, I had made a sandwich and eaten half of it.

The other half sat on a plate beside the sink while I washed the knife.

I kept thinking about the back of the ticket.

Gary had handled it.

He had taken it away from me and brought it to the office.

Yet he had apparently never looked closely enough to understand what was written there.

I could not decide whether that made him careless or simply too confident.

Perhaps it was both.

I remembered the way he had held the ticket when we first realized we had won.

He had pressed his thumb over one corner and smiled at me as though we had been handed a secret.

At the time, I thought we were sharing something wonderful.

I had not imagined that the same piece of paper would become a reason for him to turn against me.

In the afternoon, I put the folder away.

I did not hide it in some elaborate place.

I put it back in the drawer where I had been keeping it, beneath a stack of household papers.

I wanted the documents to remain where I could find them.

I did not want my entire life to become a search for places to hide things from Gary.

When he came home, he went straight to the bedroom.

I heard him speaking on the phone.

His voice was low, and I could not make out the words.

I did not stand outside the door to listen.

I returned to the kitchen and wiped the counter.

The ceramic dish sat beside the fruit bowl.

It still held two coins and a small folded grocery receipt.

I picked up the receipt, checked it, and placed it in the drawer.

The motion was so ordinary that I almost smiled.

For years, I had been the person who noticed the little things.

I noticed when we were running low on coffee.

I noticed when the car needed gas.

I noticed when the electricity bill was due and when Gary had left his keys beside the sink.

Those things had helped keep our household running.

Now, the small details were helping me remember what had happened.

That evening, Gary came into the kitchen while I was making dinner.

He stood near the refrigerator.

“Have you decided what you're going to do?” he asked.

I kept cutting vegetables.

“About what?”

“The ticket.”

“No decision has been made.”

“You know what I mean.”

I put the knife down and turned toward him.

“I know what you want me to do.”

“And what's that?”

“You want me to stop questioning your claim.”

He folded his arms.

“I want you to stop treating me like an enemy.”

“Then stop asking me to act like nothing happened.”

His face reddened.

For a second, I thought he would raise his voice.

Instead, he looked toward the window.

“You don't understand what this is doing to us.”

I looked at the cutting board.

“I understand more than I wanted to.”

He left the kitchen.

I finished dinner alone.

We ate at the same table, across from each other, with the kitchen clock ticking above us.

He asked whether I had paid the water bill.

I said I had.

He asked whether the car needed gas.

I said it did.

We spoke about the house as if it were still possible to keep our lives neatly divided into ordinary matters and the one enormous thing neither of us could escape.

After dinner, Gary took his plate to the sink.

He did not thank me for cooking.

I did not wait for him to.

I washed the dishes and turned off the kitchen light.

The next morning would bring another ordinary day.

I would wake up, make coffee, and check the mail.

The cabinet door would still refuse to close properly.

The clock would still tick.

And somewhere beyond our kitchen, the lottery office would still have to decide what to do with the ticket Gary had brought in.

I could not make that decision for them.

I could, however, keep telling the truth about how it got there.
