more often than "we."

When he discussed the winnings, he spoke as though he were the person responsible for securing them.

When I mentioned the ticket, he became irritated.

When I mentioned the divorce, he acted as if the decision had already been accepted by both of us.

I didn't know whether he had always thought this way.

Perhaps the money had simply made it impossible for him to hide it.

One evening, I found him sitting at the kitchen table with his phone beside him.

He had placed his wallet near the ceramic dish.

I noticed it immediately.

The lottery ticket might have been inside.

I couldn't tell.

He was looking through a stack of papers, and I wondered whether any of them concerned the claim.

I stood by the counter.

"Have you heard anything from the lottery office?"

He didn't look up.

"Not that I need to discuss with you."

I gripped the edge of the counter.

"Why are you speaking to me like that?"

He finally raised his eyes.

"Because every conversation becomes an argument."

"Then answer my question."

He pushed the papers aside.

"I told you, I'll handle it."

I shook my head.

"You don't get to decide that I have no part in this."

His expression changed.

For a second, I thought he might finally say something honest.

Instead, he picked up his wallet and put it in his pocket.

"I have nothing else to say."

He walked out of the kitchen.

I heard him open the front door.

Then it closed.

I stood there alone.

The ceramic dish sat on the counter, holding a few coins and a grocery receipt.

I picked it up and turned it in my hands.

It had been an ordinary part of our kitchen for years.

We used it for loose change, spare keys, and the occasional folded note.

It had never meant anything.

Now I couldn't look at it without remembering the winning ticket.

I set it down.

Then I went to the drawer and took out my folder.

I read my notes again.

I checked that the purchase receipt was still there.

I made sure I had written down the details of Linda's call as accurately as I could remember them.

I wasn't trying to build a case against my husband out of spite.

I was trying to protect the truth from becoming another thing we could no longer agree on.

That was a sad way to spend an evening.

I knew it.

But I couldn't think of a better choice.

The following day, Gary came home in a good mood.

He greeted me from the doorway and asked what I had planned for dinner.

I told him.

He nodded and went to change.

For a few minutes, I allowed myself to hope that the tension might be easing.

Maybe he had reconsidered.

Maybe the divorce filing had been an impulsive decision.

Maybe he had finally understood that the ticket belonged to the person who had bought it, regardless of how much money it was worth.

I hated how easily hope returned.

It made me feel as if I hadn't learned anything.

After dinner, Gary sat beside me in the living room.

He had rarely done that during the previous week.

He asked about my day.

I told him it had been ordinary.

He asked whether I had been thinking about our situation.

I nodded.

"I have."

He looked at the television without turning it on.

"We could avoid a lot of trouble if we stopped fighting over this."

I knew what he meant.

The ticket.

The winnings.

The questions I had asked.

The truth he didn't want to discuss.

"What would that look like?" I asked.

He turned toward me.

"We agree that the money is ours."

I stared at him.

"I already thought we would share our future."

"Then what's the problem?"

"The problem is that you went to the lottery office and said you bought the ticket."

He exhaled sharply.

"I didn't think this would turn into such a mess."

"You could have avoided the mess by telling them what happened."

He stood up.

"You're impossible."

I remained seated.

I didn't follow him.

I didn't apologize.

I didn't try to explain myself again.

I simply watched him leave the room.

The television remained dark.

For the first time, I understood that he wasn't asking me to resolve a disagreement.

He was asking me to accept his version of events.

Those were two very different things.

A few days later, I found myself thinking about the beginning of our marriage.

We hadn't been rich.

We hadn't owned an impressive house or taken expensive vacations.

But we had built a life together.

We had worked.

We had paid bills.

We had made compromises.

I had believed those years meant something.

I still believed they had mattered.

What I could no longer believe was that the years we shared gave Gary the right to rewrite what had happened on the day I bought the ticket.

I remembered standing in the convenience store line.

I remembered the cashier asking whether I wanted a ticket.

I remembered paying for it.

I remembered carrying it home.

Those memories were ordinary.

That was why they felt so solid.

They hadn't been created to win an argument.

They were simply what had happened.

Gary might tell the story differently.

He might insist that our marriage made the ticket his.

He might continue treating my questions as an attack.

But I didn't have to agree with him.

That evening, I opened the notebook where I had recorded our household expenses.

I turned through the pages slowly.

There were mortgage payments and utility bills.

There were notes about repairs and the cost of groceries.

I had kept those records because I believed it was useful to understand where our money went.

I hadn't kept them to prove that I deserved something.

I hadn't kept them to measure how much I had contributed to the marriage.

But I began to realize that I had spent years assuming fairness would take care of itself.

I had believed that because we were married, we would always be able to separate what was mine from what was ours without turning it into a fight.

I had been wrong about that, too.

I closed the notebook.

I wasn't going to use our past as a weapon.

But I wasn't going to erase it just because Gary had decided our marriage was over.

The next morning, he told me he wanted to discuss the house.

I felt tired before he had finished the sentence.

"What about it?"

"We need to think about what happens to the property."

I looked around the kitchen.

The cabinets needed attention.

The refrigerator hummed.

A small crack ran along the edge of the counter.

This was not a house anyone would envy.

But it was the place where we had lived our lives.

I had painted the bedroom walls.

I had chosen the curtains.

I had spent weekends cleaning the backyard and planting flowers that never seemed to grow as well as I hoped.

Gary had helped with some of those things.

He had also complained about many of them.

Now he was talking about the house as if it were another item to be settled.

"We haven't even figured out the lottery claim," I said.

"We can't put everything on hold."

"I'm not asking to put everything on hold."

"Then let's be practical."

I looked at him.

"Practical means dealing with one thing at a time."

He shook his head.

"You're always making things harder."

I almost answered.

Then I stopped.

I was tired of defending my ability to think clearly.

I had made my decision about the ticket.

I would tell the truth.

I would cooperate with the process.

And I would not agree to surrender my position merely because Gary wanted everything settled quickly.

I told him that I wasn't ready to make decisions about the house.

He looked disappointed.

Then he walked away.

I remained in the kitchen, staring at the small crack in the counter.

I wondered how many times I had mistaken his impatience for confidence.

I wondered how many times I had mistaken my willingness to compromise for proof that our marriage was healthy.

I wondered how much of our life I had been holding together by refusing to look too closely at the parts that hurt.

I didn't find answers that morning.

I only found more questions.

But I no longer felt obligated to answer them in a way that made Gary comfortable.

That was new.

And it mattered.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The More He Tried to Make Me Doubt Myself, the More I Remembered the Ordinary Details He Had Been Too Careless to Check

The divorce papers stayed on my bedside table for three days.
