Constant suspicion. Constant fighting."

I pressed my lips together.

He had taken my questions and turned them into the reason he wanted to leave.

I had spent days trying to understand what he was doing.

Now he was telling me that the fact I wanted to understand was the problem.

I placed the papers back in the envelope.

"Have you spoken to anyone about the lottery claim?"

He shook his head.

"That's separate."

"How can it be separate?"

"Because it is."

He took the envelope from me and set it on the table.

"I don't want to keep arguing."

Neither did I.

But I could no longer pretend that silence would protect me.

I had to think about what happened next.

Not what Gary wanted.

Not what might make him less angry.

What I needed to do to protect myself and tell the truth.

That night, I took the folder containing my notes and the purchase receipt out of the drawer.

I spread the papers across the table.

I checked the date I had written down.

I checked the sequence of events.

I remembered Linda's call and the confirmation that my signature was on the ticket.

I couldn't control what Gary would say.

I couldn't control how he would describe our marriage.

But I could keep my own account clear.

I placed everything back in the folder.

Then I put the folder in my bag.

The next morning, I made a decision.

I would not agree to anything about the lottery winnings simply because Gary was demanding it.

I would not let the divorce papers frighten me into giving up my claim.

And I would not allow the end of our marriage to erase the fact that I had bought the ticket.

I had been so concerned about preserving our relationship that I had almost forgotten I was entitled to protect myself.

That realization didn't make me feel strong.

It made me feel terribly alone.

But loneliness was no longer a reason to ignore what was happening.

A few days later, Gary asked me whether I had thought about the divorce.

We were standing in the kitchen.

He was holding a glass of water.

I was folding a dish towel.

"Yes," I said.

"And?"

"I need time to understand everything."

He shook his head.

"There's nothing complicated about it."

I looked at him.

"There is for me."

He set the glass down.

"I don't want to spend the rest of my life fighting."

"Neither do I."

"Then we should make this easy."

I glanced at the envelope on the table.

"Easy for whom?"

He didn't answer.

I folded the towel and put it away.

For years, I had believed that keeping the peace was part of loving someone.

Now I understood that peace could become another word for accepting whatever the other person wanted.

I wasn't going to do that anymore.

Gary picked up the envelope and carried it upstairs.

I remained in the kitchen.

The faded receipt was still in my folder.

I could picture the ticket clearly, even though I hadn't held it since the night Gary took it away.

I remembered signing the back.

I remembered writing the date.

I remembered the little note beneath my name.

At the time, those marks had seemed like a sensible precaution.

Now they were a reminder that I had done something to protect the ticket before I knew I would ever need that protection.

I didn't know how the claim would be resolved.

I didn't know what would happen to the money.

And I didn't know whether Gary had understood the consequences of what he had done.

But I knew the divorce papers had changed the situation.

He was no longer simply asking me to trust him.

He was preparing to end our marriage while maintaining a claim to the winnings.

I couldn't treat that as an ordinary disagreement.

I closed the drawer where I kept my folder.

Then I went upstairs and placed the divorce papers on my bedside table.

I read them again.

This time, I didn't cry.

I felt the grief, but I also felt something else.

Clarity.

Whatever happened to our marriage, I would not let fear make the decisions for me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Had Spent Years Believing We Shared Everything, Until My Husband’s Divorce Filing Forced Me to Look at What He Really Wanted

Gary didn't file for divorce that evening.
