You know I did."

He looked at me.

"And we're married."

He said it again, as though those three words settled everything.

I had heard him use our marriage to explain away plenty of things over the years.

He had used it when he wanted me to accept a decision I hadn't helped make.

He had used it when he expected me to cover an expense without asking questions.

Now he was using it to explain why he should be allowed to claim a lottery ticket he hadn't purchased.

I could hardly believe it.

"Being married doesn't mean you can tell people something happened when it didn't."

His face tightened.

"Watch how you speak to me."

I looked down at the counter.

There was a time when those words would have ended the conversation.

I would have apologized for my tone and tried to find a gentler way to explain myself.

I would have worried about making him angry instead of worrying about what he was doing.

Not that evening.

"I'm telling you the truth."

He laughed once.

"Your truth."

I felt the anger then.

Not the loud kind that makes a person throw things or say whatever comes into their head.

It was quieter than that.

It settled somewhere deep inside me.

I realized that Gary wasn't confused about what had happened.

He knew who had bought the ticket.

He knew who had checked the numbers.

He knew why I had written my name on the back.

He simply didn't want those facts to matter.

I picked up my purse from the chair.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"Nowhere. I'm putting my things away."

I carried the purse upstairs and set it on the dresser.

Then I sat on the edge of the bed.

My hands were trembling.

I pressed them together until they stopped.

I had never imagined that a lottery win could make me afraid of my own husband.

The money was supposed to give us choices.

Instead, I was sitting in our bedroom wondering how much of my life I could trust him with.

A few minutes later, Gary came upstairs.

He stood in the doorway.

"We need to handle this sensibly."

I looked at him.

"Then tell the lottery office the truth."

He shook his head.

"You don't understand how these things work."

"Then explain it to me."

He didn't.

He walked to his side of the dresser and opened a drawer.

"We don't need to make a mess of everything over a ticket."

I stared at him.

"Two million four hundred thousand dollars isn't a small thing."

"No, it isn't."

"Then why are you acting as if I should let you claim it without asking questions?"

He closed the drawer.

"I'm trying to protect our future."

I almost believed him.

That was the worst part.

Even after everything he had said, a part of me still wanted him to be the man who had smiled at our kitchen table when we first discovered the winning numbers.

I wanted him to explain that he had panicked.

I wanted him to admit that he had handled things badly.

I wanted him to sit beside me and say he was sorry.

Instead, he looked at me as if I were the obstacle between him and the life he deserved.

"You need to think about what you're doing," he said.

"I am."

"Because if you keep pushing this, things are going to get complicated."

I looked at the wedding photograph on the dresser.

We had taken it years earlier, before either of us had begun talking about money as if it were a measure of a person's worth.

Gary was smiling in that photograph.

So was I.

I wondered whether the people in it would recognize us now.

"Things are already complicated," I said.

He left the room.

I heard his footsteps moving down the stairs.

Then a cabinet opened in the kitchen.

A glass touched the counter.

The television came on.

Ordinary sounds.

The same sounds I had heard hundreds of times.

But I no longer felt at home inside them.

That night, Gary slept beside me.

I lay facing the window, listening to his breathing.

I thought about calling someone.

I considered telling a friend what had happened, but I couldn't bring myself to say the words aloud.

My husband had tried to claim a lottery ticket I bought.

It sounded almost ridiculous when I arranged the words in my head.

Then I remembered Linda's voice on the phone.

She had confirmed what was written on the back.

My signature.

The purchase date.

The note beneath it.

I held on to those details.

They were facts.

For the first time in days, I had something solid to hold on to.

The next morning, Gary acted as if our argument had never happened.

He came downstairs, made coffee, and asked whether I wanted him to bring anything home for dinner.

I watched him stir sugar into his cup.

"Have you spoken to the lottery office again?"

His spoon stopped.

"No."

"Are you going to?"

He put the spoon down.

"Patricia, can we have one morning without discussing this?"

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted one morning without fear, suspicion, and the constant feeling that I was waiting for something bad to happen.

But avoiding the subject wouldn't make the problem disappear.

"Not until we know what's happening."

He picked up his coffee.

"You're making it impossible to talk to you."

I looked at the receipt beside the fruit bowl.

"No, Gary. I'm asking you to tell the truth."

He left without finishing his coffee.

The front door shut harder than it needed to.

I stood alone in the kitchen.

Then I did something I should have done earlier.

I wrote down everything I remembered about the ticket.

Where I had bought it.

When I had brought it home.

When I had checked the numbers.

What Gary had said when he first saw the winning results.

I wrote down the conversations we had about the claim.

I included the day he took the ticket to the lottery office.

I didn't embellish anything.

I didn't try to make him look worse than he had already made himself look.

I simply recorded what had happened.

When I finished, I read the page twice.

It looked plain.

Almost disappointingly ordinary.

But I knew I needed to keep the details straight.

Gary had begun telling a different version of events.

I wasn't going to let confusion become another thing he could use against me.

I placed the page in a folder with the faded receipt.

Then I put the folder in a drawer where I could find it.

I didn't feel victorious.

I felt sad.

I had spent years believing that my husband and I could disagree without becoming enemies.

Now I was keeping records of what he said because I no longer trusted him to remember the truth.

That afternoon, he called me at work.

His voice was softer than it had been the night before.

"We need to talk."

I stopped what I was doing.

"About the ticket?"

"About us."

I closed my eyes briefly.

"What about us?"

He took a breath.

"I don't like where this is going."

Neither did I.

I waited for him to say he was sorry.

He didn't.

"I think we need some space to figure things out," he continued.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What does that mean?"

"It means we can't keep fighting like this."

"We wouldn't be fighting if you had told the lottery office the truth."

He sighed.

"You're still doing it."

"Doing what?"

"Making everything about the ticket."

I looked at the papers on my desk.

I wanted to tell him that the ticket had only exposed something that was already wrong.

But I didn't know how to explain that to someone who seemed determined not to understand.

"What do you want, Gary?"

He was quiet.

Then he said he would explain when he got home.

The call ended.

I sat still for a moment.

I had the uneasy feeling that he had already decided something and was calling to prepare me for it.

I finished my work and drove home.

Gary's car was in the driveway.

When I entered the house, he was sitting at the kitchen table.

A folder lay in front of him.

He had placed it exactly where we had once laid out the lottery ticket and checked the numbers together.

I stopped in the doorway.

"What's that?"

He looked up.

"We need to discuss our marriage."

I pulled out a chair but didn't sit down immediately.

"What about it?"

He opened the folder.

"I'm not happy, Patricia."

The words were so unexpected that I almost laughed.

We had been married for years.

We had faced financial problems, family disagreements, illnesses, repairs, and the ordinary disappointments that come with building a life together.

I had never believed we were perfect.

But I had believed we were committed.

"What does that have to do with the lottery?"

He looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.

"Everything has changed."

I sat down.

He began talking about how differently we saw the future.

He said I had become controlling.

He said I didn't trust his judgment.

He said the money had brought out a side of me he didn't recognize.

I listened.

Every accusation felt like being handed a piece of a puzzle that had been assembled backward.

He had been the one keeping secrets.

He had been the one making decisions without me.

He had been the one who took the ticket and presented it as his own.

Yet somehow, in his version of events, I was the person destroying our marriage.

When he finished, I looked at the folder.

"Are you saying you want a divorce?"

He held my gaze.

"Maybe that's what we need."

The room became very still.

I had imagined many possible explanations for his behavior.

I had imagined that he might confess to making a terrible mistake.

I had imagined that he might ask me to trust him again.

I had even imagined that he might admit he wanted more control over the money than I was willing to give him.

But I hadn't expected him to use the situation to suggest ending our marriage.

I swallowed.

"Is this because of the ticket?"

He looked away.

"It's because of everything."

I knew then that whatever happened next, I couldn't return to pretending that our disagreement was temporary.

The man sitting across from me was prepared to walk away from our marriage while still insisting that the money should be his.

I looked at the folder.

Then I looked at Gary.

For the first time, I understood that I couldn't save our marriage by accepting responsibility for his choices.

And I wasn't going to surrender the truth just to keep him beside me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Divorce Papers Arrived Before We Had Settled the Lottery Claim, and His Explanation Left Me With More Questions Than Answers

Gary stood on the other side of the kitchen counter, staring at the receipt.
