Mr. Gary Dunn."

I sat down at my desk.

I had known he might take the ticket to the office.

He had told me he was looking into the claim.

But hearing that he had presented it without telling me made my stomach turn.

"What happened?"

Linda explained that Gary had arrived with the winning ticket and had begun the process of making a claim.

He had identified himself as the purchaser.

He had answered the questions he had been asked.

And he had insisted that the ticket belonged to him.

I looked down at my hands.

For several seconds, I couldn't find my voice.

"Did he tell you that I bought it?"

Linda said he had offered an explanation involving our marriage.

According to him, I was his wife, and any signature associated with the ticket was something I would have put there for him.

I felt a strange mixture of anger and disbelief.

Gary had spent days refusing to show me the ticket.

He had told me not to worry.

He had insisted that we were handling everything together.

Now he was at the lottery office trying to claim the prize as if I had nothing to do with it.

I took a slow breath.

"Linda, I need you to listen carefully."

"Of course."

"The ticket was purchased by me. I bought it at a convenience store on my way home. I checked the numbers myself, and I was the person who discovered that it had won."

Linda didn't interrupt.

I continued.

"My husband took the ticket after we found out about the prize. I believed he was keeping it safe. I never gave him permission to claim it as his own."

There was a pause.

Then Linda asked whether I had any reason to believe the ticket could be identified as mine.

I closed my eyes.

That was when I remembered the back of the ticket.

The small, ordinary detail I had almost forgotten.

The night I bought it, I had signed my name on the back.

I had done it out of habit.

I had always heard that a person should identify a lottery ticket so it wouldn't be confused with someone else's.

Under my signature, I had written the date.

And beneath that, I had added a short note.

It was something I had written without thinking much about it.

A few words that seemed harmless at the time.

Now those words were the only thing standing between the truth and the story Gary was trying to tell.

I straightened in my chair.

"Linda, the back of that ticket should have my signature on it."

I could hear papers moving at the other end of the line.

"My name is Patricia Dunn. The signature should be mine, along with the date I purchased it and the note I wrote underneath."

Linda was quiet for a moment.

Then she answered.

"That's what we're seeing on the ticket, Mrs. Dunn."

I couldn't speak.

Not because I had been surprised by what Gary was attempting.

By then, I had begun to suspect that he wanted to keep the money for himself.

What stunned me was that he had carried the ticket into the lottery office without checking the back.

He had been so focused on the prize that he hadn't bothered to look at the one part of the ticket that could undermine his claim.

I pressed my fingers against the edge of my desk.

Linda continued speaking.

She explained that Gary was maintaining that he had purchased the ticket himself.

He had argued that because we were married, my signature could have been placed there on his behalf.

The explanation was so absurd that I nearly laughed.

Almost.

Then I remembered that this wasn't a misunderstanding between two people who loved each other.

It was my husband attempting to take something that I had bought, discovered, and trusted him to protect.

The laughter disappeared.

I asked Linda what I needed to do.

She told me to provide an account of what had happened and to follow the office's instructions for documenting my claim to the ticket.

I listened carefully.

I wrote down the information she gave me.

I asked her to confirm that the ticket would remain under review while the conflicting claims were addressed.

She explained what she could and made no promises about the final outcome.

I appreciated that.

I didn't need someone to tell me everything would be fine.

I needed the chance to explain the truth.

When the call ended, I remained at my desk.

My notebook lay open in front of me.

The words I had written during the conversation looked almost meaningless.

A name.

A date.

A few notes.

Yet those small details had become more important than anything Gary had said.

I thought about the first night we discovered the winning numbers.

I remembered his smile.

I remembered him reaching across the kitchen table to take my hand.

I remembered how he had said we would be fine.

At the time, I believed he meant that we would face the future together.

Now I wondered whether he had already begun imagining a future without me.

I didn't call him immediately.

I wanted to think.

I wanted to understand what I could do next without allowing anger to make the decision for me.

Most of all, I wanted to know whether Gary understood what he had risked by taking the ticket.

He had not only placed our winnings in question.

He had placed our marriage there, too.

I finished my work as best I could.

Every task seemed to take longer than usual.

When I finally left, I sat in my car for several minutes before starting the engine.

I wasn't crying.

I felt too numb for that.

I drove home slowly.

The house looked exactly as it had that morning.

The same front door.

The same narrow driveway.

The same kitchen window above the sink.

I unlocked the door and stepped inside.

The ceramic dish was still on the counter.

I walked toward it and picked it up.

Underneath was the old receipt from the convenience store.

I unfolded it carefully.

The print was beginning to fade, but I could still read the date.

I placed it on the counter and stared at it.

I had bought the ticket on an ordinary evening.

I had carried it home in my purse.

I had signed the back because I thought it was sensible.

Nothing about the moment had seemed important.

Now I wished I could return to it.

Not because I wanted to change the numbers.

Because I wanted to remember what it felt like to live in a world where I didn't question my husband's intentions.

The front door opened.

Gary came inside.

He looked surprised to see me standing in the kitchen.

"You're home early."

I looked at him.

"Did you go to the lottery office today?"

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

"Who told you that?"

"The lottery office called me."

He set his keys on the counter.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he gave a short, dismissive laugh.

"They shouldn't be calling you about my business."

I stared at him.

"Your business?"

He folded his arms.

"We're married, Patricia. That ticket is part of our marriage."

I felt my heart beating harder.

"I bought it."

"And we're married."

"I signed the back."

He looked away.

I saw the smallest flicker of uncertainty cross his face.

He hadn't expected me to know what had happened.

He certainly hadn't expected the office to contact me.

I picked up the receipt and held it between us.

"This is when I bought it."

He didn't reach for it.

"You're making a huge issue out of nothing."

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I placed the receipt back on the counter.

"No, Gary. I think you've made a huge issue out of something you thought I wouldn't notice."

He stared at me.

For once, he had nothing ready to say.

And standing there in our ordinary kitchen, with a faded receipt between us and the winning ticket somewhere beyond my reach, I finally understood that the money was no longer the biggest problem in our marriage.

The biggest problem was what Gary had been willing to do to get it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: My Husband Called the Winning Ticket His Property, and I Finally Stopped Pretending We Were Having an Ordinary Argument

Monday morning arrived with gray skies and a cold cup of coffee.
