You don't have to remind me."

I felt embarrassed.

Not because I had said anything wrong, but because he had made me feel as though I had accused him of something.

I apologized.

That is one of the things I regret most when I think about those first few days.

I apologized for wanting to protect something I had bought with my own money.

Gary tucked the ticket back into his wallet.

Then he kissed my forehead.

"We're going to be fine," he said.

I wanted that to be true.

For the next few days, everything seemed to move faster.

Gary started talking about what we would do with the money.

He wanted to pay off the mortgage immediately.

I agreed that it made sense to consider it.

He wanted to replace both cars.

I thought we could wait until we understood the full financial picture.

He wanted to look at houses in more expensive neighborhoods.

I reminded him that we had only just discovered the winning numbers and hadn't even completed the claim process.

He didn't like being reminded of that.

"You always have to slow everything down," he said one evening.

I was sitting on the couch with a notebook in my lap.

I had written down our debts, our monthly expenses, and a few questions we needed answered before making any major decisions.

"I just don't want us to make a mistake."

"What mistake could we possibly make with that kind of money?"

"Plenty."

He looked at me as if I had insulted him.

I closed the notebook.

"I want us to be careful."

He walked away without answering.

I sat there for a long time, listening to the television from the next room.

I had expected the money to bring us relief.

Instead, it had introduced a tension I couldn't explain.

Gary began taking phone calls in private.

When I entered the room, he lowered his voice or ended the conversation.

If I asked who he had been speaking to, he gave vague answers.

"Someone from work."

"Just a friend."

"Nothing important."

I didn't press him.

I didn't want to turn our good fortune into a constant argument.

That was another mistake.

I thought giving him room would help him settle down.

Instead, he seemed to take my silence as permission.

A few days after we discovered the win, Gary told me he wanted to visit the lottery office.

"We need to find out exactly what they require," he said.

I agreed.

"Then let's go together."

He shook his head.

"I'll make an inquiry first. There's no point in both of us taking time off if we don't need to."

That seemed reasonable enough.

I had work to do.

I told him to ask about the paperwork, the identification requirements, and anything else we needed to prepare.

He promised he would.

Then he asked me where I had put the receipt from the convenience store.

I searched my purse.

I checked the kitchen drawer.

Finally, I found it underneath a stack of grocery receipts.

I handed it to him.

He studied it.

"Good."

"What do you need that for?"

"Just in case they ask where the ticket came from."

I nodded.

He folded the receipt and put it in his pocket.

Then he left.

I watched through the window as he backed out of the driveway.

For some reason, I stood there longer than necessary.

The house seemed strangely empty.

I went back to work.

That afternoon, I called him once to ask whether he had found out anything useful.

He didn't answer.

I sent a message.

No reply.

By early evening, I had convinced myself he was busy.

When he came home, he was carrying a takeout bag.

He set it on the counter and told me he had picked up dinner.

That was unusual enough to make me smile.

"Thank you."

He barely acknowledged me.

I unpacked the food.

We ate at the kitchen table.

He talked about a man he had met at the lottery office and said there were several things to consider before making the claim.

"What things?" I asked.

"Paperwork. Timing. Financial decisions."

"Did they tell you what we need?"

"Not everything."

I waited for him to explain.

He didn't.

I asked whether the ticket was still in his wallet.

He looked at me.

"Why?"

"Because I want to make sure we keep it safe."

He gave a short laugh.

"It's safe, Patricia."

I lowered my eyes to my plate.

I didn't want to argue again.

That night, I lay awake beside him.

He was still using his phone when I turned off my bedside lamp.

The light from the screen moved across his face.

I wondered who he was talking to.

I wondered why he had become so secretive.

Then I told myself I was being suspicious without cause.

After all, he had been happy when we won.

He had held my hand.

He had talked about our future.

Surely those things had meant something.

The next morning, I found him standing near the front window, speaking quietly.

When he noticed me, he ended the call.

"Who was that?" I asked.

"Nobody you need to worry about."

The answer bothered me.

I said nothing.

He walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.

I watched him for a moment.

"Gary, is something wrong?"

He turned toward me.

"Why would something be wrong?"

"I don't know. You've been acting differently."

He shut the refrigerator door.

"Maybe I'm just tired of having every little thing questioned."

I felt the familiar urge to apologize.

I almost did.

Instead, I took a breath.

"I'm asking because we're supposed to be making these decisions together."

He stared at me.

Then he smiled.

It wasn't a warm smile.

"Of course we are."

He picked up his keys and left for work.

I stood in the kitchen, listening to the sound of his car fading down the street.

Something had changed.

I knew that much.

I just didn't know how far it had gone.

By Wednesday, the day that would later matter more than I could have imagined, Gary was behaving as if he had already made plans for a future I knew nothing about.

He talked about buying a new house.

He talked about investments.

He even suggested that I consider leaving my job.

"You won't need to work anymore," he said.

I was putting clean plates into the cabinet.

"I might want to keep working."

"Why?"

"Because I like having something that's mine."

He laughed.

"You're going to have millions of dollars. What would you need a job for?"

"Not everything is about money."

He shook his head.

"You say that now."

I turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

"Nothing."

He walked out of the kitchen.

I remained where I was, holding a plate in both hands.

I had spent years believing that our differences made us stronger.

I was practical.

He was ambitious.

I preferred planning.

He preferred taking chances.

I thought we balanced each other.

Now I was beginning to wonder whether he had always considered my caution a weakness.

That evening, I asked him to sit down with me so we could review the financial notes I had prepared.

He said he was tired.

I suggested we do it the following morning.

He said he had things to take care of.

I asked what things.

His expression hardened.

"Do you really have to know everything I do?"

I felt my face grow warm.

"No. I just thought we should talk."

"We will talk when I'm ready."

He went upstairs.

I sat alone at the table.

The notebook remained open in front of me.

The figures looked small and ordinary beside the amount we had won.

I closed it.

Then I went to bed.

The following morning, Gary left before I had finished breakfast.

He didn't kiss me goodbye.

He didn't tell me where he was going.

I heard the front door close, followed by the familiar sound of his car starting.

For several minutes, I stared at my untouched coffee.

I was hurt.

I was also angry with myself for feeling hurt over something so small.

That was how I had learned to live with Gary's moods.

I kept shrinking the things that bothered me until they seemed too small to mention.

But the lottery win had made it impossible to ignore what was happening.

We had won more money than I had ever expected to see in my life.

And somehow, instead of feeling safer with my husband, I was beginning to feel as if I needed to protect myself from him.

I didn't know what he had done.

I didn't know what he was planning.

All I knew was that the ticket had disappeared into his wallet, and the man who carried it was no longer speaking to me as if we were on the same side.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: He Started Making Plans Without Me, and I Finally Understood That the Money Had Changed More Than Our Bank Balance

The next morning, Gary woke up before me.
