I know she recognized his name and did not want him to visit her here."

The officer waited.

"But I did not see Nolan at the garage," I continued. "I did not see him lock the door, and I don't know who did."

"That's helpful," he said. "We'll document what you've told us."

The conversation ended without a dramatic revelation.

I had expected that, perhaps because I had spent so much time imagining the moment when the separate pieces would finally fit together.

Instead, I was left with a clearer record of what I knew and what I did not.

I returned to the room.

Rachel was awake.

"Was that the police?"

"Yes."

"Did they ask about Nolan?"

"They asked whether I'd seen him at the garage."

"What did you say?"

I told her exactly what I had said.

She listened, her face unreadable.

Then she asked, "Did you tell them I didn't want him here?"

"Yes."

She looked away.

I waited for her to tell me whether that upset her.

Instead, she said, "I don't want them thinking I'm trying to get him in trouble."

I sat down beside her.

"You're allowed to tell them what you remember. You're also allowed to tell them when you don't know something."

She shook her head.

"It's not that simple."

"I know it doesn't feel simple."

She looked at me.

"You keep saying we need facts."

"We do."

"But I don't know how to explain what happened without talking about things that sound small."

I leaned forward.

"Small things can still matter. You don't have to decide which details are important before you tell your account. If you choose to speak to the officers, tell them what you remember as honestly as you can. If you're uncertain, say you're uncertain."

She considered that.

"What if I remember something differently later?"

"Then you can correct it. Remembering under stress isn't always perfect."

She looked at the ceiling.

"I hate that you sound like a lawyer."

I almost smiled.

"I know."

"I don't need a lawyer right now."

"No," I said. "You need your mother."

She turned her head toward me.

I reached for her hand.

"I can be both careful about the facts and gentle with you. I haven't always done that well, but I can try."

She squeezed my fingers.

For a while, we sat without talking.

Then she began telling me about the hours before I found her.

She did not start with the garage.

She started with the argument.

She told me that she and Nolan had disagreed about a decision she had made.

She said she had tried to explain herself, but the conversation kept returning to what he believed she should do.

She had become frustrated.

He had become frustrated, too.

They had both raised their voices.

I listened without interrupting.

She described the argument as she remembered it, including the parts where she had lost her temper.

She did not present herself as perfectly calm.

She did not describe Nolan as a person who had never done anything kind.

She told me what she remembered.

When she paused, I asked whether she wanted to continue.

She nodded.

After the argument, she had left because she wanted space.

She said she had not planned to be away for long.

She had taken her phone with her.

At some point, she had ended up at the property where the garage stood.

She stopped there.

I did not rush her.

"Why were you at that garage?" I finally asked.

She pressed her lips together.

"I thought I could get something."

"What?"

She stared at the blanket.

"Something I didn't want to leave there."

I waited.

She looked at me, then away.

"I know that doesn't explain much."

"It tells me something."

She let out a tired breath.

"I wasn't trying to disappear. I wasn't trying to scare anybody. I thought I could get what I needed and leave."

I believed that she was telling me what she remembered.

I still did not know why she had gone there or how she had become trapped inside.

I wanted to ask more questions.

Instead, I asked whether she was ready to tell the officers the same thing.

She hesitated.

"Not tonight."

"Then not tonight."

"What if they need to know?"

"If they need to speak with you urgently, we'll discuss it with the medical staff and the officers. I won't tell you to ignore them. But I won't push you to give a full account while you're exhausted."

She looked relieved.

I understood that the conversation could not stay private forever.

The police were investigating an incident involving a locked garage and a person who had needed emergency assistance.

There were practical questions that required answers.

But Rachel's recovery mattered, too.

I could not use concern for the investigation as an excuse to ignore her condition.

A nurse came in to check her again.

Rachel answered the questions, then rested while the nurse recorded the information.

After the nurse left, Rachel looked at me.

"Do you think I should have told you earlier?"

I took a moment before answering.

"I think I wish you had felt able to tell me. But I don't know what made that difficult for you, and I don't want to pretend I understand before I've listened."

She nodded.

"I didn't want another person telling me what I should do."

I felt a small, uncomfortable recognition.

I had done that before.

I had offered advice before asking whether she wanted it.

I had treated my experience as a shortcut to the answer.

Sometimes my advice had helped.

Sometimes it had made her feel as though her own judgment mattered less than mine.

"I may have contributed to that," I said.

She looked at me.

"I don't want you to take responsibility for everything."

"I'm not. I'm taking responsibility for my part."

Her eyes filled.

"I didn't know how to ask you to listen without trying to fix it."

I held her hand.

"Then we can practice."

She gave a small laugh.

"Practice?"

"Yes. You can tell me when you want me to listen and when you want help deciding what to do. And I'll try not to assume I know which one you need."

She looked at me for a long time.

"That might help."

"It might."

Neither of us pretended that one conversation could repair years of habits.

We had not solved the problem.

We had made it possible to discuss it without immediately turning it into an argument.

For that evening, it was enough.

Later, the officer returned to the hospital to ask whether Rachel felt able to speak briefly about the garage.

He did not enter the room until she agreed.

I told her who was waiting and explained that she could ask for a break if she needed one.

She considered the choice.

Then she said she would speak to him for a few minutes.

I stayed nearby, but I did not answer for her.

The officer asked straightforward questions.

Rachel answered what she could.

When she could not remember a detail, she said so.

When she needed a pause, he allowed it.

I watched her face as she spoke.

She was frightened, but she was also participating in a process that did not require her to pretend she knew everything.

After several minutes, the officer thanked her and ended the conversation.

He did not announce a conclusion.

He did not tell us that every question had been answered.

He simply said they would continue their work and contact us if they needed more information.

When he left, Rachel leaned back against the pillow.

"That was harder than I thought."

"I know."

"I didn't tell him everything."

"You told him what you were ready to tell him tonight."

She looked at me.

"And that's okay?"

"It's okay to be honest about what you remember and what you don't. If there are important details you haven't shared, you can discuss them when you're able. We don't have to force every conversation into one night."

She closed her eyes.

I sat beside her and thought about the questions still waiting for answers.

I still did not know who had locked the garage.

I still did not know why Rachel had gone there.

I still did not know what Nolan had understood when she left after their argument.

But I had stopped treating every unknown as proof of the worst possibility.

That mattered.

The facts were beginning to form a record.

The rest would take time.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: When Rachel Finally Told Me What She Was Afraid Of Losing, I Realized the Ending We Needed Would Not Come from a Single Answer

The officer called the hospital later that evening.
