I don't know whether anyone else has been there."

She looked down at the blanket.

"I meant before."

I understood what she was asking.

"Do you mean before I found you?"

She nodded.

"I don't know, sweetheart. I haven't spoken to the officers about everything they discovered."

She rubbed the edge of the blanket between her fingers.

I could see her thinking about something she had not yet decided to tell me.

I wanted to ask whether she had been alone the entire time.

I wanted to know whether she had called anyone before she became too weak to speak.

I wanted to know how the garage door had been locked.

Instead, I asked a different question.

"What do you need from me right now?"

She looked at me as though she had not expected the question.

"What?"

"You don't have to explain anything just because I'm sitting here. What would help you right now?"

She was quiet.

I waited.

"I don't know," she finally said.

"That's all right."

She glanced toward the door.

"Can you stay until I fall asleep again?"

"Of course."

"And if somebody comes in, can you tell me who it is before they start asking questions?"

"Yes. I'll do that."

She looked at me for another moment.

"Even if it's the police?"

I hesitated only long enough to make sure I understood what I could promise.

"I'll tell you who's here. If they need to speak with you, I'll ask whether you feel up to it. I won't promise that every conversation can be avoided, but you won't have to guess what's happening."

She nodded slowly.

It was a small request.

It was also the clearest one she had made since I found her.

I had spent years asking questions designed to establish what happened, when it happened, and who could confirm it.

Those questions had helped me do my job.

They had not always helped me understand what a person needed before they could answer.

Rachel closed her eyes again.

I stayed beside her.

A little later, a nurse entered to check her condition.

Before the nurse approached the bed, I told Rachel who had come in.

She opened her eyes, listened to the nurse's questions, and answered them as best she could.

When the nurse finished, she explained that the doctor would return after reviewing the initial findings.

Rachel thanked her.

The nurse adjusted the blanket and left.

I watched Rachel's face.

"Was that okay?" I asked.

She nodded.

"Thank you for telling me."

I squeezed her hand.

"You asked me to."

She gave me a tired smile.

It was the first time that evening she had looked at me without immediately glancing away.

I felt grateful for it.

I also understood that one small moment did not repair everything between us.

Trust was not a light switch.

It was something we would have to rebuild through ordinary actions, repeated often enough that neither of us had to wonder whether the other meant what she said.

I could begin with the promise I had just made.

A short while later, my phone vibrated.

This time, I took it out.

Nolan had left a voicemail.

I stared at the notification.

Rachel noticed.

"Is it him?"

"Yes."

She drew the blanket closer to her chest.

"Are you going to listen to it?"

I considered telling her I could wait.

Then I realized she had asked a direct question, and there was no reason to hide my decision.

"I think I should hear what he said. I won't call him back without talking to you first."

She looked toward the window.

"Okay."

I stepped into the hallway and closed the door gently behind me.

The voicemail was short.

Nolan sounded worried, but I could not tell what had caused his worry.

He asked me to call him as soon as I could.

He said he had been trying to reach me because something had happened and he needed to know whether I had found Rachel.

I listened to the message twice.

The second time, I paid attention to the exact words.

He had asked whether I had found her.

He had not explained how he knew I was looking.

He had not said where he thought she might be.

He had not said anything that proved he knew what had happened at the garage.

Still, the question mattered.

I returned to Rachel's room.

She was awake.

I sat beside her and told her what the message said.

She listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she looked at the blanket again.

"He knew you were looking for me."

It was not a question.

"Apparently."

Her fingers tightened around the fabric.

"Did he say where I was?"

"No."

She let out a breath.

I waited.

"Do you know why he was calling?" I asked.

She shook her head.

Then she stopped.

"I know why he wanted to talk to you. I don't know why he kept calling."

I took that distinction seriously.

"What did he want to tell me?"

She looked at me for a long time.

"I need to explain something first."

"All right."

"But I don't want you to get angry."

I felt a familiar response rise in me.

I wanted to promise I would not be angry.

But I could not honestly guarantee that I would feel no anger if I heard something frightening or cruel.

What I could promise was that I would not use my anger to silence her.

"I may have feelings about what you tell me," I said. "But you can tell me the truth. You don't have to manage my reaction before you speak."

Her eyes filled again.

"I've been trying to manage everyone's reaction for a long time."

I said nothing.

She wiped her cheek with the back of her hand.

"I thought if I could keep everybody calm, I could keep things from getting worse."

"That sounds exhausting."

She gave a small, humorless laugh.

"It was."

I leaned back slightly, giving her room to continue.

She looked toward the door, then back at me.

"I don't want to tell you everything while I'm this tired."

"Then don't."

"But I want you to know that the calls weren't normal."

I nodded.

"I believe you."

She searched my face.

"You don't know what I mean."

"You're right. I don't. But I believe that they felt different to you."

She looked down.

For a moment, I worried that I had chosen the wrong words.

Then she said, "That's what I needed you to understand."

I reached for her hand.

She held on.

I did not ask her to give me a timeline.

I did not ask for the name of another witness.

I did not ask what she could prove.

Those questions might become necessary later, especially if the police needed information about the garage.

But right then, Rachel had given me something more important than a detail.

She had told me that she was frightened of what might happen when people learned what she knew.

I could not dismiss that fear because I did not yet understand it.

The door opened a few minutes later, and a doctor entered.

He introduced himself, explained that he had reviewed the initial assessment, and asked Rachel whether she felt able to answer a few more questions.

Rachel glanced at me.

I told her the doctor was there to discuss her care.

She nodded.

The doctor spoke directly to her and explained what they still needed to determine.

I listened quietly.

When he asked whether Rachel felt safe returning to her current living arrangement, she went very still.

I noticed it immediately.

So did the doctor.

He did not rush to fill the silence.

He explained that the question was routine and that she could speak honestly about any concerns she had.

Rachel looked at me.

I did not answer for her.

I did not tell the doctor what I suspected.

I waited.

Finally, Rachel said, "I don't know yet."

The doctor accepted the answer.

He explained that they could discuss practical arrangements once her condition had been assessed and she felt ready to consider them.

When he left, Rachel turned toward me.

"I don't want to go back there tonight."

"Then we'll find another arrangement."

She stared at me.

"You don't even know why."

"You've told me you don't feel ready to go back. We don't have to settle every question tonight to take that seriously."

She swallowed.

"You're not going to make me explain it first?"

"No."

Her face tightened, and she began to cry again.

I moved my chair closer.

This time, she leaned toward me without asking.

I held her carefully, mindful of the wires and the blanket.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

I did not know what Nolan's voicemail meant.

I did not know what the officers had found at the garage.

I did not know what Rachel would tell me when she was ready.

But I knew we had reached a point where she was asking me for help instead of trying to convince herself she could manage alone.

I would not make that harder than it needed to be.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: When I Finally Called Nolan Back, I Stopped Trying to Guess What He Knew and Asked Him to Tell Me Exactly What Had Happened

Rachel fell asleep with her hand resting against mine.
