The officers are there."

She stared at me.

"Did you see inside?"

"I saw you."

She seemed to consider that answer.

Then she turned away.

I wondered whether she was remembering what had happened or trying not to think about it.

I did not ask.

I had spent enough of my life believing that questions were always the fastest route to the truth.

They were useful tools.

They were not always the kindest first response.

Sometimes a person needed to know that they could stop talking without losing the attention of the person beside them.

I wanted Rachel to know that.

The ambulance moved through the wet streets.

The paramedic checked her again.

I watched him work and tried to stay out of the way.

My phone vibrated.

I felt it through my coat.

For one second, I considered ignoring it completely.

Then I remembered that I had no idea whether the call might concern Rachel.

I took out the phone and glanced at the screen.

Nolan.

His name appeared again.

I looked at Rachel.

Her eyes were closed, and the paramedic was speaking to her.

I declined the call.

I would not turn the ambulance into a place for an argument.

I would not make Rachel listen to me question Nolan before she had received medical attention.

If he had information, I could obtain it later.

If he had no information, I would gain nothing by answering while my daughter lay on the stretcher.

The phone went quiet.

I placed it face down on my lap.

A moment later, Rachel opened her eyes.

"Was that him?"

I looked at her.

"Who?"

"Nolan."

I did not answer immediately.

I had not expected her to notice.

"Yes," I said. "He called."

She looked toward the ceiling.

"Did you answer?"

"No."

She let out a slow breath.

"Good."

The word was quiet, but it changed the way I sat.

I wanted to ask why.

I wanted to ask what Nolan had done.

I wanted to know whether his calls had been a coincidence or something more.

But Rachel's eyes were already closing again.

I leaned toward her.

"You don't have to explain anything right now."

She opened her eyes just enough to look at me.

"I thought you'd ask."

"I have questions."

Her face tightened.

I felt the urge to reassure her quickly, but I waited until I knew what I wanted to say.

"We can talk when you're ready. Right now, you need care."

She watched me for several seconds.

Then her expression softened.

"Okay."

I reached toward her hand.

The paramedic glanced at us and nodded that I could hold it.

I took her fingers gently.

They were cold.

I wrapped both hands around hers and tried to give her some warmth.

She did not speak again during the rest of the ride.

I stayed beside her.

When the ambulance arrived at the hospital, the doors opened and a rush of cooler air entered the compartment.

The paramedics moved quickly but carefully.

I stepped out when they told me to and followed the stretcher through the entrance.

Bright lights replaced the gray light of the rainy afternoon.

People moved through the emergency department carrying folders, equipment, and cups of coffee.

A child was crying somewhere nearby.

A nurse called a name.

A telephone rang behind a desk.

The ordinary sounds felt strange after the silence around the garage.

Rachel was taken into an examination area.

I followed until a staff member asked me to wait outside while they completed the initial assessment.

I stopped at the doorway.

Rachel turned her head.

"Mom?"

"I'm right outside."

She looked frightened again.

I stepped closer without crossing the threshold.

"I'll be here when they're finished."

She nodded once.

Then the door closed between us.

I stood in the hallway, feeling the old helplessness return.

The garage door had opened, but another door now separated us.

This one was not locked.

It was there because people needed space to examine her and determine what care she required.

I understood that.

I still wanted to open it and sit beside her.

Instead, I found a chair against the wall.

I sat down and placed my wet coat across my knees.

My phone lay in my hand.

There were more missed calls from Nolan.

I did not open them.

I could see the numbers without needing to read them.

For the first time, I was not tempted to make a story out of the calls.

Rachel had recognized his name.

She had wanted to know whether I had answered.

She had said she was glad I had not.

Those were facts.

They did not tell me everything.

They told me enough to wait before speaking to him.

I put the phone away.

A nurse came out a few minutes later and asked me to confirm Rachel's basic information.

I answered as accurately as I could.

She asked whether I knew when Rachel had last eaten.

I did not know.

I told her that.

She asked whether Rachel had been taking any medication.

I gave her the information I had and admitted where my knowledge was incomplete.

The nurse wrote everything down.

She did not make me feel foolish for not knowing every detail.

I realized how much I had wanted to be able to answer every question.

A mother's love did not automatically give her complete knowledge of another person's life.

I should have understood that long before that evening.

Rachel was an adult.

She had her own routines, concerns, and private decisions.

There were things she had told me and things she had not.

That was not necessarily evidence that I had failed her.

It was part of being separate people.

But if she had needed help and feared asking for it, I had to be willing to understand why.

I could not decide that question before hearing her answer.

The nurse returned inside.

I leaned back against the wall.

My shoulders hurt.

My coat was still damp.

I had no idea how long I would be waiting.

For once, I did not try to turn the wait into a schedule.

I did not open my work email.

I did not check the calendar for the following morning.

I did not look for something productive to do simply because sitting still made me uncomfortable.

I waited for my daughter.

When a nurse finally came to the doorway, she told me Rachel was being assessed and would need more time.

I thanked her.

Then I returned to my chair.

I had questions.

I had fear.

I had a phone full of calls I did not understand.

But none of those things required Rachel to answer me before she was ready.

I could let her rest.

I could let the medical staff work.

I could remain where she knew I would be.

That was what I did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15:
