Medical help is being requested."

"Can I see her?"

"We're assessing the situation. Give us another moment."

I nodded.

I could not trust myself to speak without breaking down.

The officer returned inside.

I wiped my face with my sleeve.

The rain had almost stopped.

Water still dripped from the branches overhead, landing on my coat and running down my wrist.

I barely noticed it.

I listened for Rachel's voice again.

I heard the officer speak to her.

Then I heard her answer, too faint to understand.

I closed my eyes for one second.

She was there.

She had answered.

That was all I allowed myself to hold on to.

I did not tell myself she was safe.

I did not know that yet.

I did not tell myself the danger was over.

I did not know that, either.

But she was alive, and people who knew what they were doing were beside her.

For the first time since I had arrived, I could take a full breath.

The officer came back to the doorway.

"She's weak, but she's talking."

"What happened to her?"

"We're still finding out. She needs medical attention."

I understood the answer.

I also understood that understanding it did not make me less desperate for more information.

"Did she say how long she's been in there?"

"Not yet."

I nodded.

He gave me a moment before returning to the garage.

I could hear equipment moving inside.

A radio crackled.

One officer asked another to bring something closer.

I remained beneath the tree, my hands pressed together in front of me.

I wanted to be beside Rachel.

I wanted to take her hand.

I wanted to tell her that I was sorry she had been alone.

But I did not know how much she could hear or whether my presence would help while they were trying to assess her.

I had to let the people inside decide when I could approach.

The wait was different now.

Before, I had been waiting to discover whether Rachel was there at all.

Now I knew she was.

I could hear her voice occasionally, although I could not understand every word.

Each time, my shoulders loosened a little.

Each time, the fear returned in a different form.

Was she injured?

Could she breathe normally?

Had she been frightened for hours?

Had she called for help before I arrived?

I stopped myself before the questions became another interrogation conducted entirely inside my head.

The officers were still gathering facts.

I did not need to get ahead of them.

A vehicle approached the alley entrance.

This time, I could see the emergency lights reflecting against the wet pavement.

The sound of the approaching siren made my chest tighten again.

An ambulance stopped near the entrance.

Two paramedics stepped out and began gathering their equipment.

I moved forward when an officer indicated that I could come closer, but he asked me to remain outside the garage.

I obeyed.

The paramedics entered.

One of them spoke to the officers.

The other disappeared inside with a medical bag.

I stood near the door, close enough to hear movement but not close enough to see Rachel.

I wanted to ask whether she knew I was there.

Before I could speak, I heard her voice again.

"Mom?"

I pressed my hand against the doorframe.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

My voice shook so badly that I barely recognized it.

"I'm right here."

There was a pause.

Then she spoke again.

"I knew you'd come."

I lowered my head.

For years, I had believed that being dependable meant solving problems before anyone else had to worry about them.

I had believed that my work, my experience, and my ability to stay calm were the things that made me a good mother.

Now my daughter was behind a garage door, weak and frightened, and the only thing I could offer her was the truth.

I was there.

I was not going to leave.

I could not undo what had happened.

I could not promise her that everything would be easy from this point forward.

But I could stay.

"I came as soon as I knew," I told her.

I heard a small sound from inside.

I could not tell whether she was crying or trying to answer.

I wanted to go to her.

I stayed where the officer had told me to stand.

The paramedics continued working.

One of them emerged briefly to ask whether Rachel had any known medical conditions or allergies.

I answered what I knew and made clear when I was uncertain.

He thanked me and returned inside.

I watched the doorway.

My hands were shaking.

I clasped them together, then released them when I realized how tightly I was holding my fingers.

The officer stood nearby.

He asked whether I needed to sit down.

I told him I was all right.

He did not argue.

He simply remained close enough to help if I changed my mind.

That small kindness stayed with me.

He had no way to make the situation painless.

He could not tell me what had happened.

But he did not treat my fear as an inconvenience.

I had once thought that professionalism meant keeping emotion out of difficult situations.

I understood now that it could also mean making room for another person's emotion without letting it interfere with the work.

The paramedics finally began moving Rachel toward the doorway.

I saw her before I could fully prepare myself.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Her hair was tangled against her face.

Her clothes were damp and dusty.

One of the paramedics supported her while the other guided her carefully through the opening.

I covered my mouth.

"Rachel."

She turned her head.

Her eyes found mine.

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Then she reached toward me.

I moved closer, but the paramedic asked me to give them room while they transferred her.

I stopped beside the stretcher.

"I'm here," I repeated.

Rachel closed her eyes briefly.

"I know."

Those words were enough.

I did not ask her what had happened.

I did not ask why she had been in the garage.

I did not ask whether Nolan had been involved.

Those questions could wait.

The paramedics needed to examine her, and Rachel needed to be treated.

I walked beside the stretcher as they took her toward the ambulance.

The officer followed us.

Rainwater gathered in the grooves of the pavement.

I stepped around a shallow puddle without looking down.

For the first time that evening, the garage was behind me.

I had spent so long staring at its locked door that I had almost forgotten there was a world beyond it.

Now Rachel was beside me, and I was afraid to take my eyes off her.

I knew the emergency was not finished.

I knew we still needed answers.

But she had reached the other side of the door.

And I was still there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Wanted Rachel to Explain Everything, but the First Thing She Needed from Me Was Permission to Rest

The sound of the lock changing was quieter than I expected.
