12 – I Could Not Promise Myself That Rachel Would Be Safe, So I Made the Only Promise I Could Keep: I Would Not Turn Away

I had stopped checking my phone every few seconds.

Not because I had forgotten Nolan's calls.

I had simply run out of useful things to learn from the screen.

His name remained in the recent call list.

The calls remained unanswered.

I would have to deal with them when the immediate emergency allowed it.

For now, I kept my attention on the garage.

The officers were still there.

I watched them work, trying not to mistake every pause for a setback.

They had asked me to keep my distance, and I had done so.

I had given them my account, and I had not added details I could not support.

Those were small things.

They were also the only things I could control.

I thought about the dispatcher.

Her voice had been steady when mine was not.

She had told me what to do, and I had followed her instructions.

At the time, obedience had felt like failure.

I had wanted to act.

I had wanted to prove that I could protect my daughter without needing anyone else.

Now I understood that calling for help had been an action, too.

A necessary one.

I had not abandoned Rachel by waiting for the police.

I had made it possible for people trained to handle the situation to reach her.

I repeated that thought until I could believe it for more than a few seconds.

Then doubt returned.

I wondered whether Rachel knew I was there.

I wondered whether she had heard me tell her that help was coming.

I wondered whether the knocks had taken everything she had.

I wanted to hear another sound from inside.

Even a faint one.

Anything that would let me know someone could still respond.

But I could not demand that reassurance from a person whose condition I did not know.

I stood beneath the maple tree and kept listening.

A few drops of water fell onto my sleeve.

I brushed them away.

The gesture reminded me of another rainy afternoon, years earlier, when Rachel had stood beside me while we waited for a car.

I could not remember where we had been going.

I remembered her asking me a question and waiting while I finished a phone call.

I remembered promising to listen in a moment.

The memory was incomplete.

I did not know whether she had been upset or merely impatient.

I could not turn it into evidence of anything.

Still, I wished I had put the phone away sooner.

That was the danger of looking backward while afraid.

Every ordinary moment began to feel like a missed opportunity.

I had to resist the urge to make a case against myself before I knew what had happened.

I had loved my daughter.

I had tried to do right by her.

I had also made mistakes.

Those truths could exist together.

I did not need to erase one to acknowledge the other.

I looked at the garage door.

I would not turn away.

That was the promise I could make without knowing the outcome.

If Rachel came out, I would be there.

If the officers needed information, I would answer.

If I learned that I had misunderstood something, I would admit it.

If I learned that something terrible had happened, I would face it.

I could not promise myself that she would be safe.

I could not promise that the truth would make sense.

I could not promise that Nolan's calls would have an ordinary explanation.

But I could promise that I would not leave because the waiting was painful.

I stayed where I was.

The officers continued working near the door.

I watched them without speaking.

I listened for the cough I had heard earlier.

I listened for the three knocks.

I listened for anything that might tell me what waited behind the lock.

Nothing came.

I did not mistake the silence for an answer.

I did not let it convince me that hope was foolish.

I simply remained there, afraid and uncertain, waiting for the next thing I could know.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: When the Lock Finally Gave Way, I Learned That Getting Help to Rachel Was Only
