11 – I Had Always Believed Waiting Was the Easy Part of an Investigation, Until Every Second Seemed to Depend on Someone Opening One Door

The longer I stood there, the more I understood how little control I had.

I could not reach Rachel.

I could not remove the lock safely.

I could not tell whether the next sound would be a cough, a knock, or nothing at all.

I could not even tell how much longer the officers would need.

I had to wait.

The word had seemed simple when the dispatcher first said it.

Now it felt like a demand for something I did not possess.

I had patience in professional matters.

I could read a file for hours.

I could listen to a witness answer the same question in different ways.

I could spend days preparing for a hearing without knowing what the judge would decide.

Those forms of waiting had boundaries.

There was work to do.

There were documents to review.

There were questions to prepare.

I could make progress even when the outcome remained uncertain.

Outside the garage, I had no such work.

I had already given the officers my account.

I had already called for help.

There was nothing useful left for me to do except remain available.

That was why the waiting felt so cruel.

I could not turn it into a task.

I could not finish it by working harder.

I could not make it shorter by thinking faster.

I stood beneath the maple tree and listened.

The rain had nearly stopped.

Drops still fell from the branches, but the sound was softer now.

I could hear the officers moving near the garage.

I could hear a distant dog barking somewhere beyond the buildings.

I could hear a car door close.

Every sound made me turn my head.

Then I would realize it had nothing to do with the garage.

I began to feel embarrassed by how quickly I reacted.

I stopped caring about the embarrassment.

If Rachel was inside, I wanted to hear her.

If someone else was inside, I wanted to know that, too.

There was no point pretending I could make myself less alert.

I only needed to keep that alertness from turning into interference.

I folded my arms and looked at the door.

The padlock had become a kind of marker in my mind.

Before I heard the coughing, it had been a piece of hardware.

Afterward, it seemed to represent everything I could not reach.

The person behind it.

The reason for the lock.

The moments that had passed before I arrived.

The questions I would have to ask if Rachel came out.

I had no way to know whether all those things belonged together.

I knew only that the door stood between me and the answers.

I thought about the people I had prosecuted over the years.

Some had denied things that later turned out to be true.

Others had been suspected of things they had not done.

I had learned not to confuse confidence with guilt.

I had also learned that the absence of an immediate explanation did not mean there was nothing to investigate.

The facts had to come first.

That principle was still sound.

But it could not make me feel calm.

I wanted Rachel to be safe more than I wanted to be right about anything else.

I wanted to know that the sounds I heard had been her way of asking for help.

I wanted to know that calling the police had been enough.

I wanted to know that I had not missed some earlier chance to prevent this.

I looked away.

That last question was one I could not answer from where I stood.

It was also one I could hurt myself with indefinitely.

I could review every conversation, every decision, every moment when I had failed to pay attention.

I could search for a sign that should have warned me.

But until I knew what had happened, I would be searching without a clear question.

I had done that before in other parts of my life.

I had mistaken regret for investigation.

I had thought that if I examined a mistake long enough, I might discover a way to make it never have happened.

I knew better.

Still, I had to remind myself.

The officer spoke to his colleague again.

I watched them carefully.

They remained focused on the door.

I could not hear the words they exchanged.

I wanted to ask whether they had heard anything from inside.

I did not.

I had already told them about the coughing and the knocks.

If they needed more information, they could ask me.

I would not interrupt their work just to ease my own fear.

That was the promise I kept returning to.

I would wait.

I would answer questions.

I would not make the situation harder because I was desperate for an answer.

The thought did not make me feel brave.

It made me feel tired.

My shoulders ached from holding them too tightly.

I rolled them once, then let my arms fall to my sides.

The cold had settled into my hands again.

I rubbed them together.

I looked down at my shoes and noticed how much dirt had collected along the edges.

It was a small, ordinary detail.

I found myself wondering whether I would have to clean them when I got home.

The thought felt absurd.

I had no idea what would happen in the next few minutes, and I was thinking about cleaning my shoes.

But the mind does not always respect the importance of events.

It reaches for the familiar when the unfamiliar becomes too much.

I looked up again.

The garage remained closed.

I listened for Rachel.

Nothing came.

I did not know whether silence meant the person inside was unable to respond or whether there was no one there at all.

I could not choose between those possibilities.

I could only wait for the door to tell us more.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Could Not
