9 – I Wanted the Officers to Find My Daughter, but I Was Beginning to Understand How Little I Knew About the Door That Separated Us

I kept my eyes on the garage.

The officers were still working, and I had no useful way to measure their progress.

I could only watch.

Every time one of them shifted position, I wondered whether something had changed.

Every time they paused, I wondered whether they had heard something I had missed.

I knew better than to read meaning into every movement.

I did it anyway.

The rain had settled into a light, steady fall.

Water dripped from the maple branches onto the shoulders of my coat.

I barely noticed anymore.

My attention remained fixed on the closed door.

I had called 911 because I believed someone might be trapped inside.

I had told the dispatcher what I heard.

I had followed her instructions.

Now I had reached the part of an emergency that no amount of professional experience could make easier.

I had to wait for someone else to discover the truth.

One of the officers glanced toward me.

I straightened.

He returned his attention to the garage without saying anything.

I felt foolish for hoping his expression might tell me what was happening.

Then I remembered how often I had seen people do exactly that outside courtrooms.

They studied faces because they could not yet hear the verdict.

I understood them now.

I looked down at the wet concrete.

My shoes were soaked.

The cold had worked through my socks, and my toes felt numb.

It was the sort of discomfort I would normally have dealt with immediately.

That afternoon, I did not care.

There were only two things I wanted.

I wanted the door opened.

I wanted Rachel to be alive.

Everything else had become secondary.

I thought about the first cough.

I had almost convinced myself it might have come from somewhere outside the garage.

That possibility had lasted only until I called Rachel's name and heard the three knocks.

I remembered how quickly my attention had sharpened.

I had stopped thinking about the rain.

I had stopped thinking about where I was standing.

I had listened.

Then I had called her name again.

The silence afterward had been unbearable.

I wondered whether the person inside had heard me clearly.

I wondered whether they had recognized my voice.

I wondered whether they had tried to make another sound and could not.

I stopped myself.

I had no way to answer those questions.

I could not let imagination replace information.

That was what I would have told a witness.

It was harder advice to follow when the witness might be your own daughter.

I looked at the lock.

The metal appeared darker in the rain.

I could see the place where it held the door closed.

I had passed hundreds of locked doors in my life without wondering what was behind them.

Most contained nothing remarkable.

Tools.

Boxes.

Old furniture.

Things people wanted to keep out of sight or protect from the weather.

A locked door did not automatically mean danger.

But a cough behind one changed the question.

Three knocks changed it again.

I could not ignore those sounds simply because I wanted to be reasonable.

Reasonable did not mean dismissing what frightened me.

It meant responding to what I knew without pretending I knew more.

I had done that by calling for help.

I repeated the thought to myself.

It did not make the wait shorter.

My phone vibrated against my coat.

I reached for it too quickly.

For one brief second, I thought Nolan was calling again.

The screen showed no incoming call.

It was another notification, nothing connected to the emergency.

I put the phone away.

I felt embarrassed by my reaction, though nobody had seen it.

I had become so alert to Nolan's name that even an ordinary vibration could make my stomach tighten.

I wondered whether he had left a message.

I wondered whether he was still trying to reach me.

I wondered what he would say if I called him back.

I had no reason to assume his calls were connected to the garage.

I had no reason to assume they were not.

That was the problem.

I had information that felt important without knowing what it meant.

I had spent my career dealing with that kind of uncertainty.

I knew how easily people could mistake timing for proof.

I also knew that seemingly unrelated details sometimes became important once the rest of the facts were known.

The responsible response was neither to ignore the calls nor to decide what they meant.

It was to preserve the information and wait until I could ask the right questions.

I did not know when that opportunity would come.

For now, the officers needed my attention on the immediate situation.

I looked toward the garage again.

One officer moved slightly to the side.

The other remained near the door.

I could not see exactly what they were doing.

I resisted the urge to step closer.

The dispatcher had told me to wait for the police.

The officers had asked me to keep my distance.

I would not make their work harder because I was frightened.

That was one promise I could keep.

I thought about Rachel as a child.

I remembered her small hand wrapped around two of my fingers when we crossed a busy street.

She had trusted me to know when it was safe to move.

I had taken that responsibility seriously.

Or I believed I had.

Standing there, I wondered whether I had sometimes confused providing safety with providing answers.

There had been times when she wanted me to listen, and I had offered advice instead.

There had been times when she wanted my attention, and I had given her whatever remained after work.

I had always believed I would have more time to do better.

The thought was painful.

It was also unfair to judge our entire relationship through the fear of that moment.

I reminded myself that I did not know what had happened to her.

I did not know what she might need from me if she came out of the garage.

I could not repair old mistakes before learning whether she was safe.

I could only be there.

The officer nearest the door spoke quietly to his colleague.

I watched them exchange a few words.

Then they continued.

I could hear the rain falling from the roof.

I could hear water moving along the gutter.

I could hear the occasional vehicle passing beyond the alley.

I could not hear Rachel.

That absence occupied every thought.

I wanted to call her name.

I wanted to remind her that I had not left.

But I did not know whether calling out would help.

The officers were close enough to hear anything that happened inside.

I trusted them to tell me if they needed me to do something.

I remained beneath the tree.

I had learned to accept that trust did not always feel like confidence.

Sometimes it felt like standing still while every part of you wanted to move.

I watched the door.

I waited for the sound that would tell me the situation had changed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The More I Tried to Make Sense of Nolan’s Calls, the More I Realized
