hands clearly from where I stood.

I could see their positions.

I could see that they had not abandoned the task.

That was enough.

I remembered the first moment I had heard the coughing.

I had stood still, trying to decide whether the sound was real.

Then I had heard the knocks.

I had called Rachel's name.

Three knocks.

I could still hear them in my memory.

They were not dramatic.

They had not sounded like something from a film.

They were small sounds from behind a closed door.

That was what made them difficult to forget.

A person did not need to shout to ask for help.

Sometimes the smallest sound was the only one they could make.

I pressed my lips together.

I did not want to turn that thought into another certainty.

I could not know who had made the knocks.

I could not know what the person had intended.

But I knew why I had called for help.

I had heard enough to believe someone might be in danger.

That was enough.

I did not need to prove the entire story before asking for assistance.

I had spent years reminding people that reasonable action did not require perfect knowledge.

I had finally followed my own advice.

The realization brought no comfort.

It only made me understand that I had done what I could.

I looked at the garage door again.

The padlock remained a dark shape against the wet metal.

I thought about the person who had placed it there.

I could not tell whether the lock had been used for an ordinary reason or something far worse.

I could not tell whether it had been secured recently.

I could not tell whether anyone else knew what was happening inside.

I had no answers.

I had the sounds I heard and the decision I made afterward.

For now, that was all.

A vehicle passed beyond the alley.

Its tires hissed against the wet road.

I watched the headlights disappear from view.

The world continued moving beyond the garage.

People were going home.

People were finishing work.

People were probably complaining about the weather.

They had no reason to know that I was standing beneath a tree, waiting for officers to open a door that might contain my daughter.

I found that ordinary fact strangely difficult to accept.

A crisis could take over your entire life without changing anything for the people walking past it.

I had known that in theory.

I understood it differently now.

The officers remained at the garage.

I did not call out to them.

I did not move closer.

I did not take out my phone.

I simply watched.

I had spent years searching for the truth in statements, records, and the spaces between what people said.

Now I had to wait for a door to open before I could begin asking the next question.

I was no longer thinking about how I would explain the situation to a jury.

I was not thinking about how the scene might be documented.

I was not even thinking about Nolan for a little while.

I was thinking about Rachel.

I wanted to hear her voice.

I wanted to see her face.

I wanted to know whether she could walk out of that garage under her own strength.

I wanted the chance to ask her what had happened and the time to listen to the answer.

I wanted an ordinary conversation.

Nothing special.

Just a conversation.

I looked at the officers again.

They were still working.

I took one last breath and let it out slowly.

I could not make the door open by wishing.

I could not make the truth kinder by fearing it.

All I could do was remain where I was and be ready for whatever the officers discovered.

So I waited beneath the dripping maple tree, with the rain on my coat and my daughter's name in my mind.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Wanted the Officers to Find My Daughter, but I Was Beginning to Understand How Little I Knew About the Door That Separated Us

I did not remember deciding to move back beneath the maple tree.
