18 – Sylvia Put a Price on Her Persian Rug While Marcus Worried About His CEO, and Neither Explained Why Chloe Had Been Sent Away

Five thousand dollars.

I could still hear Sylvia saying it.

The amount had landed in the middle of a conversation that was supposed to be about my daughter's whereabouts.

I remember thinking how strange that was.

Not because an expensive rug couldn't matter.

Of course it could.

And if someone had genuinely damaged another person's property, the situation deserved to be addressed.

But Sylvia hadn't explained what happened.

She had simply named her price.

And she had done it while laughing at Chloe.

That laughter stayed with me.

I wished it didn't.

I wished I could remember only the useful details.

But I could hear it every time I thought about the call.

Marcus had already been impatient.

Then Sylvia joined in.

She mocked my daughter.

She demanded money.

And nobody stopped to explain the connection between those things and Chloe being at the bus terminal.

I couldn't understand it.

I kept returning to the same question.

What happened?

That was all I had asked Marcus.

I hadn't accused him.

I hadn't defended Chloe before hearing the facts.

I wanted to know what had led to this situation.

His response had been to tell me to ask her myself.

Then the call ended.

It was almost remarkable how little I had learned.

I knew a location.

I knew two people were angry with Chloe.

I knew Marcus was expecting his CEO.

And I knew Sylvia claimed she was owed five thousand dollars.

Those details mattered.

But they didn't form a complete account.

I had spent too much time trying to arrange them into one.

I looked around the kitchen.

The pies had been cooling since before the call.

The coffee sat where I'd left it.

A little earlier, I had been thinking about Thanksgiving preparations.

Now I barely remembered what I had planned to do next.

The holiday was still happening.

Marcus apparently wanted his gathering to continue without interruption.

But my daughter was somewhere downtown, according to him.

I didn't know whether she was frightened.

I didn't know whether she was angry.

I didn't know if she had someone to help her.

And I couldn't stop worrying about those unknowns.

I thought about calling Marcus and asking him to explain every detail.

Maybe I could get more information.

Maybe he would tell me something useful.

But he had already had the chance.

When I asked a direct question, he hadn't answered it.

Another call could turn into an argument.

And an argument might leave me just as uninformed.

I didn't need that.

I needed Chloe.

Still, Sylvia's accusation bothered me.

Not only because of the amount.

Because of the certainty.

She had sounded as though the debt had already been established.

As though everyone should simply accept her word.

I couldn't do that.

I hadn't seen the rug.

I hadn't heard what happened to it.

Nobody had explained how Chloe was involved.

There was no reason for me to treat the amount as confirmed.

That didn't mean Sylvia was lying.

I couldn't know that, either.

It meant the accusation needed facts behind it.

And those facts were missing.

I remembered something I'd learned through years of listening to difficult conversations.

A precise figure could make a claim sound more believable.

Five thousand dollars sounded much more definite than saying something was expensive.

But the amount alone proved nothing.

Not responsibility.

Not damage.

Not intent.

I needed an explanation.

So did Chloe, if she was being held responsible.

I wondered whether she even knew Sylvia had made that demand during the call.

I couldn't answer that.

Another question.

Another gap.

I was beginning to see how much of my distress came from trying to fill those gaps myself.

I imagined possibilities.

Then I became angry about them.

But they were still possibilities.

I had to remember that.

The woman Marcus described didn't sound like Chloe.

That much was true.

But Chloe's careful personality didn't mean she was incapable of becoming upset.

She had emotions.

She had private struggles, like anyone else.

I couldn't pretend otherwise just because I wanted to defend her.

I thought about the spare batteries she kept sorted.

The labels.

The way she prepared lists ahead of vacations.

Those habits had always reassured me.

They reminded me of how thoughtfully she approached ordinary problems.

But this wasn't an ordinary problem.

And those memories couldn't tell me what happened in Marcus's home before sunrise.

I needed her account.

Not my memories.

Not Marcus's conclusion.

Not Sylvia's demand.

Hers.

I placed the phone against the counter.

For a moment, I stopped going over the call.

The room was quiet.

Only the icy rain continued against the window.

I realized how much easier it would have been to shout at Marcus than to admit that I didn't know what happened.

Anger offered certainty.

Uncertainty required patience.

I had always told myself that facts mattered more than emotion when making a judgment.

Now I had to prove I meant it.

I could be angry at the words Marcus used.

I could question Sylvia's behavior.

I could refuse to accept an unexplained demand for money.

And still leave room for the truth to be different from what I expected.

That was difficult.

But it was fair.

I thought about Chloe at the downtown terminal.

That was where Marcus had said she was.

I needed to reach her before worrying about a rug.

Whatever had happened to Sylvia's property could be examined afterward.

Whatever Marcus believed about his wife's behavior could be discussed when the facts were clearer.

But those questions could not take priority over knowing whether Chloe was safe.

I was her mother.

I didn't need to settle every accusation to understand that responsibility.

I only needed to stop confusing the loudest voices with the most reliable information.

Marcus had been loud enough.

Sylvia had been certain enough.

Neither had given me the full story.

Until I heard Chloe, the most important part remained missing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19:
