17 – I Thought My Years of Experience Would Help Me Understand Marcus’s Call, but Nothing Could Replace Hearing What My Daughter Had to Say

I kept telling myself I was being careful.

But the truth was, I had been standing in my kitchen, asking the same questions without getting any closer to the answers.

That was hard to admit.

I had spent much of my career listening to people when something had gone wrong.

I knew how to separate what someone said from what they could actually prove.

I knew when to ask another question.

And I knew how dangerous it could be to make decisions while angry.

Yet there I was.

Thanksgiving morning.

My phone in my hand.

Trying to understand a conversation that had lasted only a few minutes.

Marcus had called at 5:02 AM.

He had told me to collect Chloe from the downtown bus terminal.

He had described her as though she were an embarrassment.

Then he had reminded me that his CEO was coming to his home.

As if that explained everything.

It didn't.

Not to me.

I remembered how abruptly he had spoken.

No greeting.

No concern I could hear.

Just an ugly remark about my daughter.

For a second, I had wondered whether I misunderstood him.

I hadn't.

He was speaking about Chloe.

His wife.

My daughter.

Twenty-eight years old.

A woman with an engineering career and a mind that liked things organized.

The same woman who wrote lists before vacations.

Who stored spare batteries in labeled drawers.

Who usually preferred understanding a problem before reacting to it.

I knew that woman.

But Marcus had described someone entirely different.

Someone he claimed had become uncontrollable again.

That word bothered me.

Again.

It suggested something had happened before.

But he hadn't told me what.

I couldn't confirm his claim.

I couldn't dismiss it completely, either.

And that was where my professional experience should have helped.

Instead, my fear kept getting in the way.

I wanted to believe Marcus was wrong.

I wanted to believe Chloe had done nothing that could justify his anger.

More than anything, I wanted to know she was safe.

But those were different questions.

And I couldn't answer any of them by remembering how Chloe labeled her batteries.

I looked toward the window.

Frozen rain still tapped against the glass.

It had been making that same quiet sound before the telephone rang.

I wondered how something so ordinary could continue while my entire morning seemed to have changed.

The pies were cooling.

My coffee sat near the sink.

Nothing in the kitchen looked different.

But I couldn't look at those ordinary things without remembering Marcus's voice.

I had held the counter when Sylvia interrupted.

Her laughter had come through the phone clearly.

Then the demand.

Five thousand dollars.

For a Persian rug.

I couldn't imagine why she thought that was the most important thing to mention while I was asking about Chloe.

But I stopped myself there.

I didn't know what happened to the rug.

I didn't know whether it had been damaged.

I didn't know why Sylvia believed Chloe should pay for it.

All I knew was that Sylvia had made an accusation without explaining it.

And Marcus hadn't helped.

He had offered no details.

No sequence of events.

No account of what my daughter had said or done.

When I asked what happened, he told me to ask Chloe.

Then he ended the call.

That silence had stayed with me.

I remembered standing there with the phone beside my ear.

Almost expecting him to continue.

Almost expecting him to remember that I was Chloe's mother and deserved to know whether she was all right.

But he hadn't called back.

At least, not during the moments I was remembering.

And I had no further explanation.

I could have allowed that silence to convince me of almost anything.

That was the danger.

When you're frightened, an unanswered question can begin to feel like evidence.

You imagine one possibility.

Then another.

Soon you've built an entire account out of things nobody actually said.

I knew better.

I had known better for years.

But this wasn't a stranger.

It was Chloe.

My daughter.

I had to remind myself that she was more than the person I remembered from childhood.

She was an adult with a life I didn't see every day.

She had conversations with Marcus that I never heard.

She had responsibilities that belonged to her.

She could have difficult moments.

She could make mistakes.

And she could experience things I knew nothing about.

Loving her didn't change any of that.

It only made accepting my limits more painful.

I looked down at the phone.

Marcus had given me one piece of information I could use.

The downtown bus terminal.

That was where he said Chloe was.

He hadn't told me precisely where inside.

He hadn't explained how she got there.

And he hadn't described her condition.

I needed those answers.

But I couldn't force them out of the call after it had ended.

I had to hear Chloe herself.

I understood then that I didn't need to decide who was right before taking her side in one essential way.

I could insist that she deserved to speak.

That wasn't a verdict against Marcus.

It wasn't a dismissal of Sylvia.

It was a basic matter of fairness.

Marcus had already told his version.

Sylvia had made her claim.

Chloe hadn't been heard.

I couldn't allow that imbalance to become the truth simply because the other two people had spoken first.

I rested my hand on the counter again.

This time, I noticed what I was doing.

I wasn't holding on because I expected to fall.

I was trying to steady myself.

I needed that steadiness.

Not another argument.

Not another angry thought about Marcus.

I needed to remain clear enough to hear whatever Chloe had to say.

Even if it surprised me.

Even if it made the situation more complicated.

Even if it was difficult for a mother to hear.

The answers weren't waiting in my kitchen.

They weren't hidden in Marcus's tone.

And they weren't contained in Sylvia's demand.

They belonged to the events I had not witnessed.

I had to accept that.

For all my years of experience, I couldn't know what I hadn't seen.

But I could refuse to decide before I listened.

That was the choice I could make.

And I intended to keep it.

<a
