15 – The More I Thought About Marcus’s Important Guest, the More I Understood That His Holiday Plans Could Not Answer My Questions About Chloe

I had never expected Thanksgiving to begin with a conversation like that.

Marcus had been concerned about his CEO.

I had been concerned about my daughter.

The contrast stayed with me.

He had mentioned his guest almost immediately.

As though an important visitor explained why he couldn't deal with Chloe.

I could understand having responsibilities.

I could understand wanting a holiday gathering to go smoothly.

But I couldn't understand why those concerns prevented him from telling me what happened.

A brief explanation would have helped.

Even an admission that he didn't know what to do would have helped.

Instead, he had made Chloe sound like an inconvenience.

Then he hung up.

I kept returning to the moment when I asked where she was.

He answered that question.

Downtown bus terminal.

It was the only practical information he gave me.

Everything else was judgment.

I remembered how calmly I had spoken.

That calmness hadn't reflected what I felt.

I had been frightened.

Angry.

Confused.

But I had learned that losing my temper could make it harder to discover what mattered.

I did not want Marcus to turn the conversation into an argument about my reaction.

I wanted him to explain what happened.

He hadn't.

I thought about calling him again.

But I already knew how the first conversation ended.

He had dismissed my question.

There was no reason to believe another argument would produce a better answer.

And Chloe was still the person I needed to hear.

I thought about the woman Marcus had described.

According to him, she had become uncontrollable again.

That final word suggested an established pattern.

But he hadn't supplied any examples.

He had not told me when something similar happened.

He had not described how anyone responded.

He had simply used the suggestion of repetition to make his judgment sound settled.

I knew that technique.

People sometimes relied on broad descriptions because specific events could be questioned.

That didn't establish Marcus's motive.

But it reminded me why I needed actual details.

I wanted to know what Chloe had said.

What Marcus had said.

What Sylvia had seen.

What happened to the rug.

And how all of it ended with Chloe downtown.

Each question belonged to the same morning.

None had been answered.

I looked toward the kitchen sink.

My coffee still sat nearby.

It was such an ordinary object.

A cup prepared for a quiet holiday morning.

I had expected to drink it while finishing the food.

Instead, it had become part of the scene I would remember whenever I thought about Marcus's call.

The counter.

The window.

The phone.

The untouched coffee.

I knew those details because I had witnessed them.

I wished I could say the same about what happened to Chloe.

But I couldn't.

And admitting that was important.

Sometimes I thought I was being patient when I was actually repeating my own conclusions.

I had been doing that throughout the morning.

Thinking of Marcus as cruel.

Thinking of Sylvia as dismissive.

Thinking of Chloe as the daughter I had always known.

Some of those judgments came from things I heard.

Others came from years of memory.

None gave me a complete account of the event.

I had to leave room for what Chloe might say.

Even if it surprised me.

Even if it challenged my assumptions.

I thought about what it meant to support an adult daughter.

It wasn't the same as making every decision for her.

She deserved respect.

She deserved to explain herself.

She deserved to be treated as someone capable of understanding her own experience.

I couldn't give her that respect while deciding her account before she spoke.

So I stopped trying to solve the entire situation in advance.

Marcus could entertain his CEO.

Sylvia could make her accusation.

Neither concern was going to determine what I did.

My immediate responsibility remained the same.

I needed to reach Chloe.

I needed to hear her.

And I needed to keep my judgment open until I did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Before I Could
