5 – I Had Decided to Find My Daughter, but the Only Account of Her Thanksgiving Morning Still Came From the Man Who Rejected Her

I had made up my mind.

Chloe came first.

Not Marcus.

Not Sylvia.

Not a holiday dinner or an expensive rug.

My daughter.

I stood in the kitchen with my phone in my hand, and for the first time since Marcus called, I understood what I needed to do.

But understanding something and knowing everything about it were different.

I had a location.

Downtown bus terminal.

That was all.

Marcus had not told me where inside the building Chloe might be.

He had not explained whether she was waiting somewhere safe.

He had not described how she had arrived there.

He had simply told me to collect her.

As though that was explanation enough.

I thought about asking him again.

One more call.

One more chance to tell me what had happened.

But I could already remember the sound of his voice.

Annoyed.

Dismissive.

Far more interested in his CEO than in explaining why his wife was at a bus station before sunrise.

I had heard enough of that.

What I had not heard was Chloe.

That absence had become the most important part of the morning.

Twenty-eight years old.

An engineer.

Married to Marcus.

Still my daughter.

I couldn't speak for every moment of her adult life.

I knew that.

Children grew up, and parents sometimes held on to old versions of them longer than they should.

I had tried not to make that mistake.

Still, I knew the habits that had followed Chloe into adulthood.

The lists she prepared before traveling.

The way she kept extra batteries sorted.

The care she took with small details other people overlooked.

Those things did not prove she couldn't become upset.

They simply made Marcus's account feel incomplete.

He had described her as though her emotions were the only thing worth knowing about her.

And that bothered me.

I had spent years learning that a person's behavior needed context.

An angry voice did not tell you what caused the anger.

Tears did not tell you who was wrong.

A frightened person could struggle to explain themselves.

And a confident person could still be mistaken.

I knew all that.

Yet here I was, trying to make sense of my daughter's situation from a few careless sentences spoken by her husband.

I returned to the first thing Marcus had said.

His choice of words had been cruel.

Deliberately so, it seemed to me.

He hadn't asked whether I could help Chloe.

He hadn't said there had been a difficult morning.

He had spoken as though my daughter were something unwanted.

I felt my hand close around the phone again.

I loosened my grip.

Getting angry at his words would not tell me what happened.

I needed to remember them.

That was different.

I wanted to know exactly what Marcus had said when I eventually heard Chloe's side.

Not my angriest interpretation.

Not a version made worse by fear.

The actual words.

I looked toward the window.

The freezing rain continued tapping against the glass.

It was still early.

Still Thanksgiving.

Nothing outside that kitchen had changed because I had received a terrible call.

The pies sat where I had left them.

The coffee was untouched.

That ordinary scene made the conversation seem even stranger.

Only a short while earlier, I had been concerned with preparing for a holiday.

Now I was trying to understand why my son-in-law had told me to retrieve my daughter from a downtown terminal.

The change was so sudden that part of me wanted to go back to the beginning.

Maybe I had misunderstood something.

Maybe Marcus had been exaggerating.

Maybe there was a reasonable explanation buried beneath his anger.

I could imagine possibilities.

I couldn't confirm any of them.

And I knew better than to confuse imagining with knowing.

I thought about the way Sylvia had joined the conversation.

She hadn't asked whether Chloe needed help.

She had laughed.

Then she had mentioned her Persian rug.

Five thousand dollars.

An exact amount.

I wondered how she had arrived at it.

Had someone assessed damage?

Was she estimating?

Had anything actually happened to the rug?

Those questions remained unanswered.

Marcus hadn't even attempted to explain the accusation.

He had simply allowed Sylvia's demand to hang in the air.

Then he had ended the call.

It was remarkable how much damage a short conversation could do.

Not because it provided so much information.

Because it provided so little.

I wanted to fill the gaps.

I wanted to know why Chloe had been described as impossible to deal with.

I wanted to understand why Marcus believed he could send her away and make that my responsibility.

Most of all, I wanted to know what Chloe had experienced.

But wanting an answer did not make one appear.

I had to accept that.

The only reliable course was to hear from her.

I thought again about the difference between helping and deciding.

Helping Chloe did not require me to declare Marcus wrong before I understood the incident.

It required me to make sure her voice wasn't missing from the account.

That was something I could commit to.

No accusation accepted without explanation.

No judgment made because someone sounded certain.

No assumption that a holiday gathering mattered more than a person's safety.

I had spent enough of my life observing people under pressure to recognize how quickly the conversation could be controlled by whoever spoke first.

Marcus had spoken first.

And loudly enough.

He had supplied the labels.

He had chosen which details mattered.

He had decided when the conversation was finished.

That did not give him ownership of the truth.

I looked down at my phone.

I had been treating the call as the beginning of an argument.

Now I understood it another way.

It was the beginning of a question.

What had actually happened to Chloe?

Until I heard her, that question would remain open.

And I intended to keep it open.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: While My Son-in-Law Worried About His
