2 – I Knew My Daughter’s Habits Better Than Anyone, but My Son-in-Law’s Accusations Left Me With Questions He Refused to Answer

The hardest part of that call was not the insult.

It was how little Marcus had told me.

I knew where Chloe had supposedly been left.

I knew he was angry with her.

I knew Sylvia believed some damage had been done to her rug.

That was almost everything.

There had been no description of the incident.

No account of what led up to it.

No explanation of how Chloe had ended up at the bus station.

I stood in the kitchen and went over the conversation again.

I had asked about Chloe.

Marcus had answered by criticizing her.

I had asked what had happened.

He had told me to find out from her.

It was a strange way to discuss an emergency.

Especially with someone who was supposed to love the person involved.

I thought about Chloe's work.

Engineering suited her.

She liked details.

She trusted measurements more than guesses.

When something went wrong, she normally wanted to understand why.

It wasn't that she never lost her patience.

I had seen her frustrated.

I had heard her speak sharply when things became difficult.

I had also seen her pause and return to a problem once she could think clearly.

Marcus's description gave me no room for any of that.

He had reduced her to one ugly judgment.

Then he had repeated the idea that she was behaving badly again.

Again.

That word stayed with me.

It suggested a history.

It suggested that this morning was part of something familiar.

But he had not described a single earlier event.

I couldn't know what he meant by it.

And I refused to pretend that I did.

A familiar accusation was not the same as proof.

Neither was a confident voice.

I had learned that long before Thanksgiving.

In my career, people sometimes expected me to make decisions before I had all the information.

A person would speak quickly.

They would sound certain.

They would choose words that encouraged an immediate reaction.

Sometimes they were telling the truth.

Sometimes they weren't.

The only useful approach was to separate what I had actually learned from what I was being encouraged to believe.

That morning, the distinction seemed more important than ever.

Marcus's first statement told me something about his attitude.

It did not tell me what Chloe had done.

His claim that she had become uncontrollable was an accusation.

It wasn't a description of an event I could examine.

The bus station was a location.

The rug was an allegation.

His CEO was a reason he didn't want to be interrupted.

None of those things answered my question.

What had happened to my daughter?

I glanced toward the pies again.

They had been sitting there since before the call.

Earlier, I had been thinking about Thanksgiving food and the hours ahead.

Now those thoughts seemed almost absurd.

I could remember worrying about the timing of the morning.

I could remember noticing the weather against the window.

Such ordinary concerns.

They belonged to a morning in which I believed everyone was where they should be.

Marcus had taken that assumption away.

I wanted to know what Chloe had said.

But I had not heard her voice.

I wanted to know what Sylvia had seen.

But all Sylvia had offered was laughter and a demand for money.

The difference mattered.

I could not give their claims equal weight with something Chloe had not yet had the chance to explain.

That didn't mean deciding Marcus was lying.

It meant refusing to decide anything before I knew enough.

I looked down at my phone.

His name was still connected to the last call in my mind.

I thought about ringing him again.

There were so many questions I could ask.

Had Chloe left on her own?

Had someone taken her to the terminal?

Was she waiting inside?

Did she have a way to contact me?

Why hadn't he called sooner?

But I stopped myself.

Marcus had already been given an opportunity to explain.

I had asked a direct question.

He had dismissed it.

Calling again might produce more words.

It might not produce more information.

And time was passing.

I thought about Chloe at twenty-eight.

Old enough to manage her own life.

Old enough to have a career and a marriage.

But she was still my daughter.

That did not mean I had the right to speak for her.

It meant I had a responsibility to listen when something was wrong.

I could not listen to her from the kitchen.

That was the simple truth.

Whatever Marcus believed, whatever Sylvia claimed, Chloe deserved to be heard.

I turned that thought over until it became a decision.

I would speak to Chloe herself.

I would hear her account before deciding what to think.

The rest could follow.

I looked once more toward the window.

The ice was still ticking against the glass.

For some reason, the small sound bothered me.

It went on without changing.

The world didn't stop because something frightening had happened inside one family.

The kitchen remained warm.

The holiday remained on the calendar.

The food was still waiting.

And somewhere downtown, according to Marcus, my daughter was at a bus station.

That was the only place I had been given to look.

It was enough to act on.

I didn't need another opinion.

I needed Chloe.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Five-Thousand-Dollar Rug Accusation Stayed in My
