I asked.

Marcus told me she was at the downtown bus station.

His voice sounded impatient.

Not frightened.

Not concerned.

Just irritated.

He said Chloe had lost control of herself again.

He described her behavior as another emotional outburst.

I waited for him to explain.

He didn't.

Instead, he started talking about the important guest he was expecting that day.

His CEO.

Thanksgiving was apparently an occasion he couldn't allow Chloe to disrupt.

"Eleanor, I've got my boss coming over," he said. "I can't spend the morning dealing with her."

I looked toward the dark kitchen window.

I could see my own reflection in the glass.

I remember how still I looked.

It was the kind of stillness that came when I heard something I couldn't yet make sense of.

Chloe was twenty-eight years old.

She worked as an engineer.

She was organized almost to a fault.

When she traveled, she prepared everything ahead of time.

She kept supplies where she could find them.

Even the extra batteries at home had their own labeled places.

That was my daughter.

Careful.

Practical.

Someone who liked knowing what came next.

Of course, she had emotions.

Of course, she could become frustrated or overwhelmed.

Everybody could.

But Marcus was describing someone I barely recognized.

I had known Chloe all her life.

The woman he was talking about didn't sound like her.

Before I could question him further, another voice came through the phone.

Sylvia.

I recognized her because Marcus had made no attempt to hide the conversation from her.

She laughed.

It wasn't a nervous laugh.

It sounded amused.

She told Marcus that Chloe should go home with me.

Then she brought up a rug.

An expensive Persian rug, according to her.

She claimed my daughter owed her five thousand dollars because of it.

Five thousand.

I remember that number clearly.

It was so specific that I expected an explanation to follow.

None came.

I put one hand against the counter.

The surface was cool beneath my palm.

"Marcus, tell me what happened," I said.

He let out a long breath.

The sort people make when they want you to know they consider your question unreasonable.

He told me to question Chloe myself.

Then he made one thing clear.

He didn't want her returning to his home.

Not that morning.

Not after what he claimed had happened.

The call ended.

I kept the phone against my ear for another second.

There was nothing left to hear.

Only silence.

I lowered it slowly.

My coffee was still beside the sink.

The pies were still cooling.

The frozen rain kept touching the windows.

Everything in the kitchen looked exactly as it had before the call.

But my morning had changed.

Marcus had told me where Chloe was.

He had offered his opinion of her.

Sylvia had added an accusation about money.

Neither of them had explained what had actually happened.

That mattered.

I had spent much of my working life listening to people speak when they were trying to make someone respond.

I knew the difference between a fact and an accusation.

I knew how easily a harsh description could become the thing everyone remembered.

A person could sound confident and still leave out the most important details.

Marcus had sounded very confident.

He had also told me almost nothing.

I thought about the bus station.

Downtown.

On Thanksgiving morning.

I pictured Chloe somewhere inside it, although I had no idea what condition she was in.

That frightened me more than Marcus's insults.

He had talked about an important visitor.

Sylvia had talked about a rug.

Neither had said whether Chloe was safe.

Not once.

I wanted to call Marcus back.

I wanted to demand answers.

I wanted to ask how a husband could speak about his wife that way.

But I also knew what an angry conversation could do.

It could turn into an argument about words.

It could give Marcus another chance to describe Chloe without explaining anything.

And while I argued, my daughter would still be waiting at the station.

I set the phone down.

My fingers had tightened around it so hard that I could feel the pressure after I let go.

I was angry.

There was no point denying that.

I was also afraid.

That was harder to admit.

Because fear made me want to believe the first explanation that offered itself.

Maybe there had been a terrible argument.

Maybe something had happened that Marcus had described badly.

Maybe Chloe was more upset than I understood.

Those were possibilities.

Nothing more.

I couldn't turn them into facts simply because I needed an answer.

I thought again about his words.

The way he had spoken about getting rid of her.

The way he had made Chloe sound like an inconvenience standing between him and his holiday.

That part wasn't a possibility.

I had heard it myself.

I looked at the time again.

5:02 had already passed.

It had taken only a short call to leave me standing in my kitchen with questions I couldn't answer.

Where was Chloe inside that station?

Why had Marcus sent her there?

What had Sylvia meant about the rug?

And why had neither of them sounded worried?

I could not solve those questions in my kitchen.

I could only decide what mattered first.

My daughter was downtown.

I needed to reach her.

Whatever explanation came afterward would have to wait until I knew she was safe.

I picked up my phone again.

This time, I wasn't going to waste the morning arguing with Marcus.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: I Knew My Daughter’s Habits Better Than Anyone, but My Son-in-Law’s Accusations Left Me With Questions He Refused to Answer

I used to believe I knew when someone was lying.
