19 – The Amount Did Not Explain the Intention

Six million dollars remained the hardest part of the check to think about.

Not because I could not read the number.

Because I could read it perfectly well.

There was no confusion about the amount written on the paper.

The confusion began when I tried to decide what the amount meant.

I could compare it with familiar expenses.

I could imagine how many ordinary purchases it might cover.

I could think about the difference between earning a salary and receiving a sum of money in a single transaction.

But those comparisons did not tell me why my grandmother had chosen that figure.

They only showed me how far it stood from the financial life I understood.

I was a teacher.

My days were shaped by a calendar, a classroom, and work that continued whether I felt prepared for it or not.

I planned lessons.

I read student writing.

I answered questions.

I thought about books and the people who read them.

Money mattered, of course.

It mattered in the ordinary ways it mattered to anyone who had bills and responsibilities.

But six million dollars was not an ordinary amount in my life.

It was large enough that I could not treat it as a minor change in circumstances.

That did not mean I should immediately decide how to use it.

It meant I needed to understand what I had before making assumptions about what came next.

At that point, I did not have funds available to spend.

I had a check undergoing review.

Edward had explained the distinction plainly.

The account held sufficient funds, according to the preliminary examination.

That fact did not remove the bank's need to complete its procedures.

The check had to pass the required verification and approval.

The process could take several business days.

I had heard those words.

I had understood them.

Still, some part of me kept trying to move ahead of the facts.

I found myself imagining the moment when the review would be finished.

I imagined the uncertainty ending.

I imagined being able to think about the money as something more concrete than an amount on paper.

Then I had to remind myself that I did not know when the review would be complete or what questions might arise during it.

Edward had not promised an immediate result.

He had not guaranteed a specific day.

He had described the process and warned me not to confuse the preliminary findings with final approval.

I could not fairly turn his explanation into a guarantee simply because a guarantee would have been comforting.

I had to wait.

Waiting was not the same as deciding that something would go wrong.

It was not the same as deciding that everything would go right.

It was simply the stage I was in.

I could acknowledge that the preliminary findings were encouraging without treating them as the end of the matter.

I could recognize that the check had not been rejected without assuming that all the remaining procedures had become unnecessary.

I could be cautious without deciding that my grandmother had done anything wrong.

Those distinctions were easy to state.

They were harder to maintain when I thought about the amount.

Six million dollars made me want certainty before certainty was available.

It made me want to know what the bank would say, what my grandmother had intended, and what the other family members understood.

I wanted to bring all those questions together and receive one answer that would settle them.

But the questions did not belong to the same process.

The bank could review the check.

It could assess the relevant records.

It could complete its controls.

It could decide whether the transaction met its requirements.

That was one matter.

My grandmother's intention was another.

The relationship between the checks given to different family members was another.

What each recipient understood was another.

I could not expect one answer to settle all of them.

The bank's review would not tell me whether my grandmother believed the checks were equal.

It would not tell me whether she expected us to discuss them.

It would not tell me whether she had a reason for choosing the amount written on mine.

Even if the transaction were eventually approved, the question of intention would remain.

I had not wanted to separate those questions at first.

I had treated the check as if it contained everything I needed to understand.

Now I saw that it contained only part of the story.

The amount was one fact.

The signature was another.

The account information was another.

The preliminary review connected those details to a real account and indicated that sufficient funds were present.

But the meaning of the gift was not a number the bank could verify.

I could not measure intention by the number of zeroes.

I could not assume that a large amount meant my grandmother wanted me to make a dramatic change.

I could not assume that it meant she expected something in return.

I could not assume that the gift came with no expectations at all.

The check did not answer those questions.

I had to leave them open.

That did not mean I had to ignore the practical importance of the money.

It meant I should not confuse practical consequences with personal meaning.

A sum of money could make new choices possible.

It could also make a person feel pressure to choose correctly.

I could imagine both reactions in myself.

One part of me wanted to see the check as an opportunity.

Another part wanted to put it aside until I understood why it had been written.

Neither reaction changed the facts.

I did not yet know whether the funds would be released.

I did not yet know what the other recipients had been told.

I did not yet know whether their checks matched mine.

And I did not yet know what my grandmother expected me to do.

The amount could not answer those questions simply by being large.

I tried to think about what I would say if someone asked me to explain the situation.

I would not say that the money was already available.

That would ignore the review still underway.

I would not say the check had been declared invalid.

That would contradict what Edward had told me.

I would not say that I knew why my grandmother had written it.

I did not.

I would say that the bank's preliminary examination had confirmed several important details, and that further procedures were required before the transaction could be completed.

Then I would say that my grandmother had given checks to five other family members as well as me.

I would stop there.

I would not claim to know the relationship between the checks.

I would not invent an explanation for her decision.

I would not assign feelings or motives to my relatives.

If I had to describe my own response, I would say that I was surprised and uncertain.

That was not an elegant explanation.

It was the truth.

I had always believed that the best answer was the one that explained the most.

Now I was learning that an answer could become less reliable when it tried to explain more than the evidence supported.

The check had given me a fact I could not ignore.

It had not given me permission to invent the missing details.

I needed to keep those two things separate.

The amount was real on the page.

The transaction was still under review.

The intention remained unknown.

I could live with those statements being true at the same time.

I did not need to force one of them to erase the others.

*END PART 19**

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: What Remained
