18 – What I Could Say Without Guessing

I kept thinking about the question Edward had asked.

How many checks had my grandmother given away?

At the time, I had treated it as a request for a number.

I had counted the people in my family and answered.

My parents.

Eric.

Olivia.

Aunt Diane.

Uncle Martin.

Me.

Six people.

The answer had been easy to give because it required no explanation.

I knew who had received checks.

I did not know what those checks contained.

I could name the recipients without knowing what my grandmother intended for them.

That was the problem.

The list of names looked complete, but the information behind the names was not.

I could not use the list to predict what anyone else would do.

I could not assume that Eric would react one way or another.

I could not assume that Olivia had the same questions I did.

I could not decide what my parents might think about the amount.

I had no basis for assigning motives to Aunt Diane or Uncle Martin.

I knew them as family members.

I did not know what they knew about the checks.

That difference mattered.

When I imagined the others receiving their envelopes, I was filling in a scene I had never witnessed.

I could picture familiar faces.

I could imagine the surprise of seeing a large amount written on a check.

I could imagine the questions that might follow.

But none of those imagined scenes was evidence.

I had to keep reminding myself of that.

A person could receive a check without understanding why it had been written.

A person could understand the reason and still be surprised by the amount.

A person could have received an explanation that I had never heard.

There were several possibilities, and I could not choose among them just because one seemed more comfortable.

I had no right to turn my uncertainty into a story about the rest of my family.

I barely knew how to tell the story of my own check.

The number was clear.

The preliminary verification was clear.

The remaining procedures were clear enough to understand.

The intention behind the gift was not.

I thought about the difference between the amount written in figures and the amount written in words.

On a check, those details were supposed to agree.

They were part of making the document precise.

A bank could compare them.

It could determine whether the written amount matched the numerical amount.

It could verify the signature against the record it held.

Those were questions with defined answers.

My question was different.

Why had my grandmother chosen six million dollars?

I could not answer that by examining the handwriting.

I could not answer it by counting the family members who had received checks.

I could not answer it by calculating what the money might allow me to do.

The amount told me what she had written.

It did not tell me why.

I had to resist the urge to treat the size of the gift as a complete explanation of its importance.

Large sums of money could change circumstances.

They could create choices that had not existed before.

They could also create expectations that people had not discussed.

But I did not know whether my grandmother had attached any particular expectation to this check.

I did not know whether she had wanted me to change my life.

I did not know whether she had simply wanted to give me something.

I did not know whether there was a reason she had not explained.

It would have been easy to pick one of those possibilities and begin arranging my thoughts around it.

That would have given me something to do.

It would not have made the conclusion true.

I had spent years teaching students that a reader should distinguish what a text actually said from what a reader believed it implied.

Now I had to apply the same discipline to a piece of paper that had arrived in my own life.

The check said six million dollars.

The bank had confirmed several preliminary details.

The bank had also explained that further review was required.

Those were the statements I could defend.

Everything else needed to remain a question.

I could not even say with confidence what the other recipients had been told.

The fact that my grandmother had given them checks did not establish that she had spoken to each of them in the same way.

I did not know whether the checks had been presented under similar circumstances.

I did not know whether she had discussed the amounts.

I did not know whether any of us had asked her questions before accepting them.

I did not know whether the others had already taken their checks to their own banks.

I did not know whether they had even examined them closely.

Each unknown seemed small by itself.

Together, they made the family situation feel much larger than the bank transaction.

The transaction had a process.

There were controls to follow.

There were people whose job it was to review the document.

There was a clear reason for waiting.

The family questions did not have that kind of structure.

No one had handed me a list of what I needed to understand.

No one had told me which questions mattered most.

I had to decide how much I could reasonably conclude from the facts I had.

For a while, I kept returning to the possibility that the other checks might be equal.

If they were, the gift might have been intended as an equal distribution among six people.

That was one possible interpretation.

It was not the only one.

The checks might have contained different amounts.

They might have been intended for different purposes.

The circumstances might have been more straightforward than I imagined.

Or there might have been details I had not yet considered.

I had no evidence to choose among those possibilities.

Even the word *distribution* seemed to imply more knowledge than I possessed.

I knew that my grandmother had given checks to six people.

I did not know whether she had thought of them as one coordinated arrangement.

I did not know whether she had calculated the amounts together.

I did not know whether she had explained her decisions.

The word could make the situation sound organized and understood.

It was neither of those things to me.

I had to use the simplest description available.

My grandmother had given me a check.

The amount was six million dollars.

The bank's preliminary examination had not revealed a reason to dismiss it as invalid.

Further review was still necessary.

I could say those things without adding an interpretation.

I could also admit that I was overwhelmed.

That feeling did not need to be disguised as analysis.

The amount was far beyond anything I had expected to see written on a check made out to me.

I could understand why the bank was taking its time.

I could understand why I needed to be careful.

I could understand why the process was not finished.

What I could not understand was my grandmother's intention.

I wanted to ask her questions, but the fact that I wanted answers did not mean I already knew what those answers would be.

I wanted the other family members to fit into a clear explanation.

I wanted the checks to have a simple meaning.

I wanted the situation to become ordinary enough that I could think about it without feeling as though every possibility carried enormous weight.

Wanting those things did not make them available.

I had to accept the difference between what I needed to know and what I actually knew.

That was not a satisfying conclusion.

It was an honest one.

I could not explain my grandmother's decision to another person.

I could not explain the relationship between all six checks.

I could not tell anyone what the money was meant to accomplish.

I could only describe the check in front of me and the bank's response to it.

For the first time, I understood that giving a clear account of the situation meant leaving some questions unanswered.

I did not have to fill every silence.

I did not have to turn each possibility into a claim.

I could let the facts remain limited.

My grandmother had written the check.

Edward had examined it.

The bank had outlined the remaining procedures.

The rest had not yet become clear.

That was enough to describe what had happened without pretending I understood why.

*END PART
