17 – The Difference Between a Valid Check and an Answer

Edward Collins had confirmed what he could confirm.

The account existed.

The signature matched the one on file.

The check number was consistent, and the account held sufficient funds.

Those facts should have made me feel better.

Instead, they left me with a different kind of uncertainty.

I had walked into the bank carrying a check from my grandmother, expecting the hardest question to be whether it was real.

Now I knew it appeared to be real, and I still had no idea what that meant for my life.

Six million dollars was a number I could understand in the abstract.

I could write it on a blackboard.

I could ask a class to read it aloud.

I could explain the difference between six hundred thousand and six million without hesitation.

But understanding the number was not the same as understanding what it meant to receive it.

I was a literature teacher.

Most of my working days involved books, essays, student questions, and the familiar routines of a classroom.

I knew how to explain why a character made a difficult decision.

I knew how to recognize when a narrator was hiding something from the reader.

I knew that people often said one thing while meaning another.

Yet I could not look at my grandmother's check and explain what she had meant by writing it.

Edward had not claimed to know.

He had not offered a theory about my grandmother or her intentions.

He had explained the bank's preliminary findings and the work that remained.

That was his responsibility.

Mine was to decide what to do with the information.

I looked at the check again.

The paper had seemed almost ordinary when I first held it.

Its edges were straight.

The writing was clear.

The amount was printed where an amount belonged.

Nothing about it looked dramatic enough to change a person's understanding of his family.

But the number had changed the way I looked at everything surrounding it.

I thought about the other checks my grandmother had given away.

My parents had received one.

Eric had received one.

Olivia had received one.

Aunt Diane and Uncle Martin had received one.

And I had received mine.

Until I said all those names aloud, I had not fully understood how many people were involved.

Edward had asked me how many checks she had written.

It was a simple question.

I had answered it as simply as I could.

Six people, including me.

But the answer had raised more questions than it settled.

Had she written the same amount on every check?

Had she intended each of us to receive the same thing?

Had she explained the checks to anyone?

Did the others know that I had brought mine to the bank?

I had no answers.

I could not assume that the checks were equal merely because they had been given to members of the same family.

I could not assume they were different, either.

The truth was that I knew only what I had seen and what Edward had told me.

I had the check.

I had the preliminary verification.

I had the bank's warning that further review was necessary.

Everything beyond those facts remained uncertain.

I wanted to make the uncertainty smaller.

That was why I kept returning to the details.

The account existed.

The signature matched.

The check number was consistent.

The funds were sufficient.

Each statement was a solid point in a conversation that otherwise seemed to have no center.

I could hold on to those facts without turning them into something they were not.

Edward had been careful about that distinction.

He had not told me the money was mine to spend.

He had not said the bank would release it immediately.

He had not promised that the remaining checks would pass the same review.

He had said that enhanced verification, fraud controls, a source-of-funds review, and internal approval could take several business days.

I understood what those words meant.

I also understood what they did not mean.

They did not tell me why my grandmother had written the check.

They did not tell me whether she had expected me to deposit it.

They did not tell me whether she had wanted me to do something with the money.

The bank could examine the document.

It could compare the signature.

It could review the account.

It could follow its procedures.

It could not explain my grandmother to me.

That part remained outside the office.

I had wanted the check to provide an answer.

Instead, it had established the limits of what I knew.

I remembered how quickly I had reacted when Edward confirmed the amount.

Six million dollars.

I had heard the number and immediately begun thinking about its consequences.

I had thought about the practical meaning of such a sum.

I had thought about the family members who had received their own checks.

I had wondered whether I should be relieved or worried.

I had tried to decide whether the amount was a gift, an obligation, or something I did not yet understand.

But those were my interpretations.

They were not facts printed on the check.

The check did not contain a complete explanation.

It contained an amount, a signature, and the information the bank needed to examine it.

Everything else depended on circumstances I did not know.

I was uncomfortable admitting that.

I preferred questions with answers I could verify.

In my classroom, if a student asked what a sentence meant, I could point to the words around it.

I could discuss context, tone, structure, and the choices an author had made.

Even when the meaning was debatable, there was something concrete to examine.

Here, the most important context was missing.

I did not know what my grandmother had been thinking when she wrote the check.

I did not know what she had told the other members of the family.

I did not know whether any of us had received an explanation.

The check was real enough for the bank to continue examining it.

Its meaning was still unknown to me.

That distinction became more important the longer I considered it.

I could not make the check mean whatever I wanted it to mean.

I could not decide that it was harmless simply because I wanted the situation to be simple.

I could not decide that it was suspicious simply because the amount frightened me.

I needed to leave room for what I did not know.

That was harder than it sounded.

Six million dollars made it difficult to think slowly.

The number invited immediate conclusions.

It made every possible outcome seem enormous.

Even doing nothing began to feel like a decision with consequences.

But the bank had not asked me to settle my entire future that day.

Edward had explained a process.

The process would take time.

The money was not immediately available.

The check required further review.

I did not need to turn those statements into a promise or a threat.

I needed to understand them as they were.

I had arrived wanting certainty.

I left the conversation with a smaller amount of certainty than I had hoped for, but a more accurate understanding of the situation.

The check had not been dismissed.

It had not been declared fully cleared for immediate use, either.

The bank's preliminary findings were encouraging, but they were not the end of the review.

I could respect that without pretending it answered the questions I cared about most.

My grandmother had written a check for six million dollars.

She had given checks to other members of the family.

I did not know why.

I did not know what she expected from any of us.

And I did not know whether the amount written on my check matched the amounts written on theirs.

Those were not small gaps in my understanding.

They were the center of it.

I had spent too much time trying to make them disappear by thinking harder.

No amount of staring at the paper could supply information that was not there.

The only honest thing I could do was keep the known facts separate from my guesses.

For once, I needed to stop treating uncertainty as a problem I could solve by refusing to let it remain uncertain.

I had a valid-looking check under review.

I had a bank manager who had explained the procedure.

And I had a family situation whose meaning I could not yet determine.

That was where I stood.

Not at the end of an answer.

At the beginning of a process whose outcome I still had to wait for.

*END PART 17**

<a
