thoughts known simply by imagining their reactions.

I had to let the facts arrive in their own time.

That didn't mean I had stopped caring.

If anything, I cared more because I had begun to understand how little I could safely assume.

The check was too significant to dismiss.

It was also too significant to treat casually.

I needed to approach it with patience and honesty.

The amount remained extraordinary.

The signature remained familiar.

The bank's review remained unfinished.

And my grandmother's reasons remained unknown.

For the moment, those were the truths I could stand behind.

I didn't know what the next development would bring.

I didn't know whether the bank would need more information before completing its review.

I didn't know what questions might arise when the family began making sense of the checks.

But I knew I had to stop pretending I could answer those questions before they were asked.

I folded my thoughts back to the simplest point.

Grandma had written the check.

The bank was examining it.

And I was her grandson, trying to understand what that meant without inventing a story to fill the silence.

That was where I stood.

It wasn't the ending I wanted.

It was the truth I had.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: I Had Never Thought to Ask Grandma About Her Money, and Now I Couldn’t Stop Wondering What Else I Had Failed to Understand

The more I thought about the check, the more I realized I had been asking it to explain too much.
