4 – The Bank Could Confirm the Signature and the Money, but It Couldn’t Explain Why Grandma Had Included All of Us

By the time I had taken in Edward's explanation, I understood the immediate situation better.

The check wasn't being rejected.

The bank wasn't telling me that my grandmother's signature was false.

The initial examination had supported the check's legitimacy.

But the transaction still needed to pass through the bank's additional procedures.

That was where things stood.

I wanted certainty.

What I had was a process.

Edward had explained that the bank needed to verify an unusually large transaction before making the funds available.

There were checks to complete and approvals to obtain.

The work could take several business days.

I couldn't make it happen faster by staring at the paper.

I couldn't make the amount more believable by counting the zeroes again.

And I couldn't change the bank's requirements by explaining how surprised I was.

So I listened.

That was probably the most sensible thing I did that day.

I had spent the first part of the conversation trying to understand how a check like this could be real.

Now I was beginning to understand that confirming its legitimacy was only one part of the situation.

The other part was my grandmother's decision to give checks to several relatives.

I couldn't stop thinking about that.

Why had she included all of us?

Had she arrived at the decision after a long period of thought?

Had she discussed it privately with anyone?

Was there something about the family that made this arrangement important to her?

I had no answers.

I was careful not to confuse my questions with evidence.

The check proved that she had written a check in my name.

The other checks, as far as I knew, showed that she had made similar decisions involving my relatives.

Beyond that, I couldn't responsibly claim to know anything.

I wondered what the others were thinking.

My parents might have been asking the same questions.

Eric might have been trying to understand the amount.

Olivia might have been waiting for confirmation.

Aunt Diane and Uncle Martin might have had their own explanations for what Grandma had done.

But I couldn't speak for them.

I could only speak for myself.

And I was struggling to make sense of something that had happened directly to me.

The amount alone was enough to unsettle me.

Six million dollars was not a sum I could casually fold into my existing life.

It was too large to treat as an ordinary financial event.

Yet there it was, written in my grandmother's familiar hand.

I found myself looking at the signature again.

That small detail seemed more personal than the amount.

The bank could compare it with the signature it had on file.

For me, it was a reminder of the woman who had written the check.

I knew the handwriting.

I recognized the name.

I had never expected to see those familiar marks attached to a sum of money like this.

I couldn't make the contradiction disappear.

Edward had been measured throughout our conversation.

He hadn't promised that the money would be available immediately.

He hadn't encouraged me to make plans.

He had simply explained what the bank could confirm and what still needed to happen.

I appreciated that more than I could say.

It kept me from pretending the matter was settled.

I had enough uncertainty already.

When I thought about my grandmother, I realized I was trying to answer two different questions.

The first was whether the check could be trusted.

The bank's initial findings gave me reason to believe it was legitimate, although the review remained unfinished.

The second question was why she had decided to give it to me.

No signature comparison could answer that.

No account verification could explain why she had included my parents, Eric, Olivia, Aunt Diane, and Uncle Martin.

The bank could establish facts about the transaction.

The meaning behind it was something else.

I had to leave room for that distinction.

I had come looking for a straightforward answer.

Instead, I had learned that the check appeared genuine, that the bank needed more time, and that my grandmother's decision involved the wider family.

It wasn't everything I wanted to know.

But it was what I knew.

For now, I would have to let the verification process continue without assuming that the outcome was guaranteed.

I would also have to resist the temptation to invent a reason for my grandmother's actions before I had any real explanation.

The check had given me a number.

The bank had given me an initial assessment.

Neither had given me the answer I wanted most.

Why us?

And why now?

I left those questions unanswered, because anything else would have been pretending.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: I Left the Bank Knowing the Check Was
