3 – I Had Spent Years Believing I Knew My Family, but One Conversation at the Bank Made That Confidence Feel Unreasonable

There was something embarrassing about how little I understood.

I knew the people who had received checks.

I knew their names, their relationships to me, and their places in our family.

I knew my grandmother well enough to recognize her handwriting.

Yet I had no explanation for what she had done.

I couldn't tell Edward why she had chosen that amount.

I couldn't say whether she had discussed the decision with anyone.

I couldn't even tell him whether the other checks were identical to mine.

All I could offer was the list of recipients.

My parents.

Eric.

Olivia.

Aunt Diane.

Uncle Martin.

Me.

The list sounded simple when I said it aloud.

It didn't feel simple in my head.

I wondered whether my grandmother had intended the checks to bring us closer together.

Perhaps she had wanted to give each of us something meaningful.

Perhaps there was a practical reason for the arrangement.

I had no basis for choosing one explanation over another.

Any answer I invented would have been a guess.

So I stopped trying to explain her motives to myself.

That was harder than it should have been.

I was accustomed to finding connections between details.

When I read a novel, I looked for the small things that revealed what a character was thinking.

A pause.

A change in tone.

A sentence that meant more than it seemed to mean.

But I had only a few facts about my grandmother's decision.

I couldn't turn those facts into a complete explanation simply because I wanted one.

Edward had not offered any theories.

He had kept his attention on the check and the procedures surrounding it.

I respected that.

He wasn't there to interpret my family.

He was there to make sure the bank handled an extraordinary transaction properly.

I needed to do the same thing with my own part of the situation.

First, I needed to understand what was known.

The check appeared legitimate.

The account existed.

The signature matched the bank's records.

The funds were sufficient to cover the amount.

Those facts mattered.

They were also different from a guarantee that I could spend the money immediately.

The bank still needed to complete its review.

I repeated that distinction to myself because I could already feel my imagination moving faster than the facts.

Six million dollars was a powerful number.

It encouraged a person to think ahead.

It invited plans, calculations, and questions about what might become possible.

But the money was not yet available to me.

Even if the transaction proceeded as expected, I still didn't know what my grandmother had intended beyond writing the check.

I had to resist the temptation to treat the amount as an answer to questions she had never answered for me.

I looked toward Edward.

He seemed comfortable with the silence.

I was the one who needed to fill it.

Instead, I sat quietly and tried to take in what had happened.

I had entered the bank with a check that seemed too extraordinary to trust.

I had expected to discover a mistake.

Instead, the initial examination had supported the possibility that the check was genuine.

That should have made me feel relieved.

Part of me did.

Another part felt exposed.

I had been ready to dismiss the check as impossible because it didn't fit the picture I had formed of my grandmother.

Now I had to consider that the picture might have been incomplete.

I didn't like admitting that.

It was easier to believe I understood the people closest to me than to accept how much could remain unknown.

Still, the check was right there.

I couldn't dismiss it simply because its existence challenged my assumptions.

And I couldn't pretend the bank's review was finished simply because the initial results were encouraging.

For the first time since I had arrived, I stopped trying to jump to the end of the story.

I would have to wait for the bank's decision.

I would have to accept that the next few business days might bring more information.

And I would have to face the fact that the six-million-dollar check had raised questions no bank employee could answer for me.

<a
