We'll update you when we have more information."

I thanked her and returned to Grace.

She immediately looked at my face.

"Did they fix it?"

"Not yet. They're reviewing the information."

Her shoulders lowered slightly.

I sat beside her.

"I know waiting is hard," I said.

She nodded.

"Did Dad do something wrong?"

I took a moment.

"He handled paperwork connected to the authorization. The hospital is checking exactly what that means."

"But why would he do that?"

"I don't know all the reasons yet."

She looked away.

I wanted to tell her that Daniel had not intended to hurt her.

He had said he did not want her left without help.

But I also knew that I could not use his stated intention to answer every question Grace had.

"I know Dad said he didn't expect this to happen," I told her. "But we still need to understand the decision he made."

Grace pulled the blanket over her knees.

"Can people do something bad without meaning to?"

The question was so direct that I had to look down for a moment.

"Yes," I said. "Sometimes people make decisions without understanding what those decisions will cause."

"Does that mean it's okay?"

"No."

She watched me.

"It means we need to understand what happened and take responsibility for what needs to be fixed," I said.

She was quiet for a long time.

I wondered whether she was thinking about Daniel or about other moments when she had been told that someone's intention mattered more than how she felt.

I didn't ask.

I wanted her to have room to think without feeling that she needed to give me the answer I wanted.

My phone vibrated.

Daniel had sent a message saying he had provided the information he found.

I asked whether he had given it directly to the appropriate staff.

He replied that he had followed the instructions he was given.

I thanked him and told him I would wait for the hospital to confirm that the information had been received and reviewed.

His next message asked whether I was still planning to stay.

I answered that I was.

He did not reply immediately.

I put the phone away.

Grace had watched the exchange.

"Is Dad coming here?"

"I don't know."

"Would you tell me if he was?"

"Yes."

She rubbed the seam of her sleeve.

"I don't want him to be mad at me."

I moved my chair closer.

"He can have feelings about what happened. But you didn't create this problem by telling me your stomach hurt."

She nodded, although she still looked worried.

I wished I could make her believe it completely.

But she had spent more than one day learning to question whether her pain would be accepted.

One afternoon of reassurance could not undo that.

I could only keep giving her the same message without making her responsible for comforting me afterward.

A nurse came in to check on her.

Grace answered the questions in her own words.

I listened and added only the details she asked me to provide.

When the nurse finished, I asked whether the clinical team had made any new decisions.

She explained what was available at that point and said she would return with further information.

I thanked her.

The distinction between what was known and what was pending had become important to me.

I could not treat a conversation with Daniel as proof that the administrative problem was resolved.

I could not treat the hospital's continued review as proof that Grace's care had stopped.

I had to ask what was happening now rather than assuming the worst or accepting the easiest explanation.

After the nurse left, Grace asked if she could have another drink.

I handed her the cup.

She took a few sips and passed it back.

"Thank you," she said.

"You're welcome."

She looked toward the doorway.

"Do you think everything will be normal when we go home?"

I didn't answer too quickly.

"I think we'll need to talk about what happened. I can't promise that everything will feel normal right away."

Her face tightened.

"Will you and Dad fight?"

"We might disagree. But I won't ask you to fix it."

She looked down at the blanket.

I wanted to promise that Daniel would understand.

I wanted to promise that we would never have another argument that made her feel caught in the middle.

I couldn't honestly promise either thing.

What I could promise was that I would not tell her to pretend she wasn't hurt just because an adult found the conversation uncomfortable.

She leaned back against the pillow.

I stayed beside her.

The paper cup was light in my hand.

The phone was quiet on the table.

The hospital still had questions to answer.

For the first time that afternoon, I let myself wait without trying to solve everything in my head.

I didn't need to decide what kind of person Daniel was before I knew exactly what he had done.

I didn't need to know how our marriage would feel tomorrow before I could be a mother today.

Grace was here.

She had told me she was hurting.

And I was listening.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: When the Hospital Explained What It Could Confirm, I Had to Separate the Paperwork Problem from the Trust That Had Already Been Damaged at Home

The next update came while Grace was looking at the cup on her bedside table.
