I said.

She looked surprised by my answer.

I had spent years trying to make worry invisible around her.

I thought that if I appeared calm, she would feel safe.

But I was beginning to understand that pretending I had no worries could make her believe that she was the only one frightened.

"I'm worried because you're hurting, and because we don't have all the answers yet," I explained. "But I'm here, and I'm asking for the information we need."

She nodded.

"Can you be worried and still know what to do?"

I thought about that.

"Sometimes I know the next step even when I don't know the whole answer."

"What is the next step now?"

"To keep working with the hospital and make sure we understand what needs to happen next."

She looked at the cup on the table.

"That sounds slow."

"It does."

She gave a small, tired smile.

I returned it.

There was comfort in being able to agree about something without arguing over it.

A nurse came in and checked on Grace.

She asked how the pain was and whether anything had changed since the last visit.

Grace answered her.

The nurse listened and explained that the team would continue to determine the appropriate next steps.

I asked whether the authorization review had produced any new information.

She said there was still no confirmed update.

I thanked her.

After she left, I wrote down the answer.

Then I read through my notes from earlier.

The hospital had identified a cancellation.

Daniel had acknowledged handling paperwork connected to it.

He had said he hadn't expected the situation to become this complicated and that he had not intended for Grace to be left without help.

The hospital had not yet explained the details or told me exactly how the record would be addressed.

That was what I knew.

Everything else remained uncertain.

I wanted to believe that Daniel's explanation would eventually make sense.

I also wanted to know why he had made the decision without discussing it with me.

Those were separate questions.

Even if his intentions had been different from what I feared, we still had to address the consequences of the paperwork.

And even if the hospital resolved the administrative problem, Grace's pain still needed attention.

I couldn't let one answer stand in for the others.

My phone rang.

Daniel's name appeared on the screen.

I answered.

"I found the information I was looking for," he said.

I sat a little straighter.

"What did you find?"

He said he had located the paperwork connected to the authorization.

I asked whether he could provide it to the hospital.

He said he could give them the information they needed.

"Can you tell me exactly what the paperwork says?"

"I'm looking at it now."

I waited.

He read out some of the wording, but he did not explain every detail.

I asked him to send the relevant document or provide it directly to the staff handling the record.

He said he would.

I thanked him.

The conversation was still tense, but it had become more practical.

I wasn't asking him to agree with my feelings.

I was asking him to help clarify what had happened.

Before ending the call, I asked one more question.

"Do you understand why I couldn't simply bring Grace home without an explanation?"

He was quiet.

Then he said he understood that I was worried about her.

It wasn't the same as saying he agreed with everything I had done.

But I didn't need agreement to continue.

"I need us to put her care first," I said.

"I know."

I ended the call and sat still for a moment.

I didn't feel victorious.

There was no satisfaction in having finally gotten him to speak about the paperwork.

I was still frightened.

Grace was still waiting.

The hospital still had work to do.

But the conversation had produced a concrete next step.

I could work with that.

Grace looked at me.

"What did he say?"

"He found the paperwork. He's going to provide the information so the hospital can review it."

"Does that mean we can leave?"

"Not yet. We need to hear from the hospital about what it means."

She nodded.

I could tell she was trying not to get her hopes up.

I felt the same way.

I had learned that a promise to do something was not the same as the thing being done.

I would wait for confirmation.

A few minutes later, I sent Daniel a short message reminding him to provide the information directly to the appropriate staff.

He replied that he would handle it.

I didn't ask him to promise again.

Instead, I turned my attention back to Grace.

She was rubbing her stomach gently through the sweatshirt.

"Is it worse?" I asked.

"About the same."

I told her I would let the nurse know.

When the nurse returned, I passed along what Grace had said.

I made sure to use her own description rather than trying to interpret it for her.

The nurse listened and noted the information.

I asked whether there was anything else we should be doing while the team continued its assessment.

She explained the next steps available at that point and said she would keep us informed.

I thanked her.

Then I sat down again.

Grace watched me.

"You don't get mad when I say it still hurts."

I looked at her.

"No, sweetheart."

"Even when I keep saying it?"

"Especially then. If it still hurts, I need to know."

She looked down at her hands.

"I thought people got tired of hearing it."

I felt a quiet ache in my chest.

I thought of the breakfast table again.

The burned butter.

The untouched eggs.

The way Daniel had called her complaint an attention routine.

The way I had allowed his words to shape the conversation.

I couldn't erase that memory by responding perfectly now.

But I could make a different choice every time Grace told me what she was experiencing.

"I might not always know what to do right away," I said. "But that doesn't mean I don't want to hear you."

She looked at me.

"Okay."

It was a small answer.

I accepted it as one.

I didn't ask her to promise she would always tell me everything.

Trust wasn't a contract she needed to sign.

It was something I had to earn through what I did next.

I rested my hand on the blanket near hers.

For the first time since we arrived, I stopped watching my phone every few seconds.

I knew Daniel needed to provide the information.

I knew the hospital needed to review it.

I knew there were still questions I couldn't answer.

But I didn't have to keep staring at the screen to make any of those things happen.

I could wait for the staff to return.

I could listen to Grace.

I could be ready when someone needed to speak with us.

And I could remember that the most important question was not whether Daniel thought I had overreacted.

It was whether Grace was receiving the attention she needed and whether the adults responsible for her were doing what they could to help.

I sat beside her as the room settled into quiet again.

The cup remained on the table.

Her canvas backpack rested near the chair.

The frayed cuffs of her sweatshirt lay across the blanket.

I looked at those ordinary things and reminded myself not to mistake an ordinary appearance for proof that everything was fine.

I had done that once already.

I would not do it again today.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Waited for the Hospital to Review Daniel’s Paperwork, Knowing That Even a Reasonable Explanation Would Not Erase What Grace Had Been Afraid to Tell Me

The room was quiet when I checked my phone again.
